Interview with Chris Kramer, Senior Director of Communication and Community for Capcom.

29:04 in on DMC4 mandatory installation: "So essentially, on the PS3 version it's gotta install some files on the hard drive in order to have the game run as fast [on the PS3] as it does on the 360."

Pripyat

A very strange statement, seeing as after the install, the PS3 version is said to have faster loading times than the 360; not the same. I smell something in the air, smells like 'irony.'

DementedDragon

The issue is that 5gb of installation should do ALOT more than make the loading times 2 seconds instead of 3. That is nowhere near a big enough difference to justify 5gb's.

Dear Capcom,

You are liars.

Sincerely,

Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet and Clank, and Burnout

haha i love the ps3 but your comment made no sense?

how does uncharted, heavenly sword, ratchet and clank prove that blue-ray isnt slower than the 360's dvd drive when their all great exclusives to the ps3?

because all of those games have literally no load times during gameplay...

Regardless, the loading times weren't the same; perhaps the Blu-ray drive is slower. Or maybe Capcom isn't use to the PS3 hardware, seeing as how this is their first 'current gen' game for the system.

The main issue that comes to my mind with the Blu-Ray drive Sony chose to include is it wearing out. A 2x drive has to work itself to DEATH to call information up from a 50gb disc. I mean, we're talking all cylinders firing here. That's why I think people are installing data onto the HDD. I bet its only data that is used often. The PS3 could very well see mass Blu-Ray drive failures down the road if that slow little drive wears itself down to nothing.

hold up a second. i see some posts linking to data that the read speeds of the 12X dvd drive and the 2X blu-ray drive are the same (and in some cases BR has the advantage). this is true, and its not whats causing the PS3 its problems. finding the data in the first place is. that disc in the 360 is spinning 6X faster meaning that it takes less time for data to get to the read head in the first place. game data is naturally fragmented and blu-ray is not designed to effectively deal with it (neither is DVD, but the 12X drive goes a long way towards compensating). the BR drive in the PS3 is a movie drive through and through. its designed only for streaming data at a constant rate for HD movies.

this is why alot of games are needing installs on PS3. HDDs are much much faster than any disc drive. that 5GB install for DMC4 is probably all the game content minus the music and speech and sound effects. thats why its loading faster than the 360 version. its in no way a testament to the BR drive, quite the opposite to be honest.

I've played both those games and no, you don't "install" them onto the HDD. Yes, when you start the game it loads some files onto the HDD, but the game isn't being "installed" so much as cached.

I don't believe the bull about the PS3 needing the install to be up to speed with the 360 version because of the drive speed, simply because of the other games that have been released with smaller installs andfine loading times without the cache. I think it is because the game is multiplatform and therefore, not really tapping the strengths of either system to their fullest. i think that if DMC4 stayed exclusive to the PS3, it would be a different story.

Anyway, who cares about the install? I have said a million times, I would've LOVED an install option for Lost Odyssey on the 360 rather than waiting 20 seconds everytime I got into one of the battles or moved from one area to another. Isn't it funny that when a developer tries a BR sized game on the 360 the loading sucks even more so than a game on the PS3? Besides, it is from something that geek M$ idiot did so yea, I will believe that. It is nothing bud a sad attempt at trying to make the 360 look better by someone that works for the company.

ZIMdoom

Well, the problem with the 360 is MS forces devs to make games so that people without the HDD can still play them. So it is more difficult for bigger, longer games to get rid of load times. If MS would have put the HDD standard, then this wouldn't be an issue.

Exactly right. I will never understand why they went from having the standard HDD in the XBOX, which was quite revolutionary, to having the pathetic HDD-less model. It is retarded.

Blu-ray is faster than DVD. The PS3s Blu-ray drive is 2x speed (faster than 6x DVD), but Blu-ray does have the potential to reach 12x speed by the end of its lifecycle. 12x Blu-ray is equal to 40x DVD in which no DVD drive exists with that speed.

I am surprised how so many people know so little about Blu-ray.

DMC4 load on the 360 is like 3 - 10 sec at the most and only when you start a level.

Then why does it loads faster in every test made by most reviewer sites? 2-3 seconds may not mean much, but if you have 100 of those...

Um.. remember it takes about 25-30 minutes to install in the first place. If the saved time isn't at least substantially more, it's a total waste and does nothing. :/

Who the hell cares that Blu-Ray is too slow for nextgen... as of now, bluray is doing amazing this gen.

Nextgen will be like 7-10 years down the road and do you honestly think that Sony/Microsoft wont come up with something faster than blu-ray by then?

No **** Capcom, thats just like saying "PS3/Xbox/Wii.. not good enough for nextgen"

Forcing people to install games is stupid. 7-8 second loading times is nothing worth forcing an install..
