You don't have to kill him. If your intimidate/charm is high enough, you can convince him not to attack.

I actually though Aeris' death was good. She was a low level useless healer. And her death was just corny.

I didn't like it when B. Carmine died in Gears 2 but I didn't notice that he did until a few chapters after his death. And Zack Fair from Crisis Core.
