Who even looks at the manual? I'm all for the removal of them altogether, the less paper we consume the better.KittenWishes

Yep, I've got tons of video games that I've never even looked at the manual of. In fact probably not a single one.

If they implimented it in Xbox Live where you'd hit the Xbox button, and it'd pull up the dashboard and you could see the manual it would save time, money, trees, etc.

I guess I'm one of the only people that actually read the manuals. If I hadn't, I probably wouldn't have found out that wicked weaving allows you to hold down the button mid combo string to dodge + continue that combo string in bayonetta. Or that taunt in the game enrages the enemy but increases the rate at which the magic bar fills up. Neither of those are explained in the game.

[QUOTE="Hexagon_777"][QUOTE="Yandere"]Yeah, because who likes owning solid copies of their game and adding it to their collection? Pffh, none that's who!Yandere
There are more gamers than collectors, thankfully.

Gamers still like owning solid copies, for example I'm not a collector but I love owning my games.

I am a gamer and believe that owning solid copies of games is a nuisance. Regarding the issue of owning a game, I was told a while back by a seemingly informed poster that you don't own solid copies of games either. Don't remember all the legal details.

This is bad? I haven't looked at a paper manual for years! They are waste.

Hell even DVDs don't come with them anymore.

Hexagon_777

DVDs came with manuals? Why would DVDs come with manuals? :?

The inner material is usually a chapter list. Sometimes it'll also have some production notes or other Easter eggs or teasers.

There is one problem with digital manuals: So far (at least on the PSP Go), you can't look at it while playing the game. I'm sure the Xbox/PS3 will patch an option in-game to look at it, but so far when it comes to game manuals, some games on the Go simply don't even have them. I can foresee this being a problem with future console games.

xYamatox
Most games these days teach the moves you need as you go, making the manual less of a necessity. Plus many have online move guides that can be accessed by simply pausing the game (normal pause menu).

I can sell it, I can give it to someone, I can borrow it, I can keep it till I die, I can bring it anywhere I go, I can break it.

I think I own the game when I buy it.

The issue is that you still possess the disc and box and so on. The law can't prevent you from selling it off to whomever. The question has not yet been definitively settled in the DD arena, making resale of DD games a less certain thing.

Technically, you don't own the game itself (thus why you're not allowed to copy it), but you do own the right to the copy in your possession. When you sell it off, you sell all rights associated with that copy with it. It's the rights issue that muddies the resale waters in DD--TOU contracts say you can't resell the game because you never really bought it, but the Copyright Act and a 2008 federal case can lend argument to the idea that "if it looks like a sale and transacts like a sale, it's a sale". It's just that no one's put the idea to the test yet.

I don't remember the last time i read a manual. Digital manuals would be much better. Also, i know there have been cases where you rented a game without the manual or you let someone borrow a game and they forgot to return the manual.

There are two legal minds about that issue, too. Some say it counts as a personal backup and valid under the Copyright Act; others say such a backup isn't needed (goes back to the cart days) because replacement copies can be had in other ways. How it swings if you end up on the wrong side of the courtroom can depend on the mood of the judge and/or jury.

Did he kill your family or something? There's no reason to call him a little kid.

Paper manuals are just a waste of papers. You could easily put tutorials in the game.

Yep Yep.

im ok with it. only reason i even look at manuals is for the pictures and whatever backstory is in it. and they can do that digitally. might even look better on a tv screen.

I don't get how gamers are so adverse to anything new. Getting rid of the manuals is good for you, and them. Get over it, or stop gaming. Because if you think it's going to stop here, you are damn wrong.

To all those who want the price of games to be lowered because of the removal of manuals, how much of a price drop do you think this actually warrants? $1, $2? Honestly, would seeing $57.99 make you that much happier?tbone802
Not really, but if they're taking something away I want something in return.

I support digital manuals

When you weigh in the positives and negatives the digital copy just makes so much more sense. Not to mention, that manuals in general hardly provides any information outside the realm of basic controls and setup.

Blue-Sky
Pretty much. They could have a much better search system to find information and whatnot, rather than just making your game case feel a bit heavier.

Most modern games have pretty much eliminated the need for paper manuals by way of extensive tutorials or in-game training, so it nothing to get mad about.

i don't like it when my physical retail copys of games have digital manuals unless there a legitimate reason like civ IV where there was just to much information they couldn't fit it all in the book so needed a complete digital manual.

lol about complaining about this kind of thing

paper manuals are a waste of paper, time and money, they barely tell you anything anymore anyway. additionally in canada (and i fully recognize its my own fault for moving here) sometimes the release of a game is delayed while they print up bilingual manuals because theyre required by law. theres nothing worthwhile about paper manuals and when they go its strictly a good thing.

All this really does is provide one less incentive to buy a game new, seeing as how one of my primary reasons is a pristine manual.

Wow.. Seems to be a lot of hate towards Cliff for his statement.. I mean honestly. How many of you actually read the manuals that come with these titles? The last manual I read was Darksiders to find out a little more about the abilities. Before that I can't even tell you the last time I read one. If Manuals were worth money (assuming that they're not) I would clean house because most of mine are in mint condition.

Then someone needs to clear that up because naysayers are seemingly playing their argument on the uncertainties that are involved with digital distribution. The people for digital distribution don't care either way with regard to the owning/selling/giving away/whatever issue so it doesn't go two ways.

Some of these people trip me out.

1. You already kill us on the price of a game, $60.

2. You bring out games half done with content locked on it until you buy a key to unlock it and say it's new.

3. You bring out garbage collectors editions almost all the time.

4. Now you wanna take away the most reliable part of the game, A Physical Manual.

I tell you what, just make games that's all! Stop trying to give us less and less and charge us more and more it's getting pretty ridiculous by now.

The industry is slowly dying.

No one is making you buy their games. If you don't support their business then don't be apart of it. No one is making you buy Gears of War.

Also, getting rid of manuals is better for the enviorment. It seems to me that this is a step forward in the future of what gaming will be, Digital Distribution.

actually, what would be better for the environment is to print manuals out of recycled paper. But that would require them to shell out more cash.

Most games that are worth anything (Chrono Trigger, FF7, etc etc) are worth more with their case and manual. Of course in the future, if game manuals are no longer the norm, i suppose having a manual wouldn't matter for collectors, since they didn't exist in the first place.

He worked his way through Epic Games by creating some of the best maps from the original UT series. He deserves his position. On the topic, boo. I like instructions (Something to read while taking a dump), so long as the price drops accordingly for said manual reduced games then I am fine.

I don't undertand why people are so upset about this. Saves paper and its not like its a downgrade, all the information is just presented in a different and honestly, more efficent way.

And who even reads the manuals anyway?

paper manuals are the most pointless thing. They offer nothing but a list of controls and what the menus do. They aren't what they used to be. If there is a online manual what's the big deal?

I support the idea, honestly...I mean, companies are saving a ton of money doing this (and let's face it, game development isn't getting any cheaper by the day), and in return, we're saving the environment...besides, when's the last time we've been distraught over the loss of a game manual? Sure, it's nice to have, I guess...but most games have in-game tutorials at the beginning, so manuals aren't really needed this day and age, IMO.

[QUOTE="-Feath-"]Valve hasn't been including physical manuals in their PC games since 2004. What's the fuss about? It's a great idea, less paper and other materials are wasted on printing knowledge that hardly deviates from the normal. It's the same stuff over and over again, generic controls which are again re-iterated in the actual game. Get with the times.

No valve game since hl2 has had a real manual. They are just quick reference cards saying the controls. No one seems to care. Hl2 has no actual manual. Online or off.

I support digital manuals

When you weigh in the positives and negatives the digital copy just makes so much more sense. Not to mention, that manuals in general hardly provides any information outside the realm of basic controls and setup.

Have you seen the MW2 Manual?? I could of swear its like 4 or 5 pages

It's not even 5 unless you count the contents or 3 page of eula. 4 pages of controls what each game mode is and hud items. and then 3 page for the eula lol who cares if they go? Seriously the only colour manual with more than about 8 pages in my game collection is mgs4, now that is a real manual but the rest are just b&w junk that say nothing.

RPG games especially jrpgs one have great informative manual that is worth having a physical copy of it. Same for some Nintendo manuals they are great. Now do manual matter or not probably yeah, since websites such as ebay have people wanting a game with a manual more than just a simple game without it's manual,
