Agreeing with him isn't placing importance on it. You are however making it seem like he was trying to convince people otherwise with his rant, when it was really just a rant full of good points.

GD1551

For a post that wasn't meant to convince anyone, it sure was written that way. And he did tag her and CNN, so obviously he did intend for her to see it.

Then what was he looking for? Catharsis? Not very constructive.GD1551

It's a twitter post, and his points are very constructive no matter how they come across.

When you have to lead off with calling someone an idiot, EVEN IF THEY ARE, you aren't being constuctive at all. That might work in System Wars but if you are trying to argue a point on a larger scale with non gamers that think you aren't articulate enough to disprove their points, maybe you shouldn't argue like a 15 year old that can't articulate their points..

Can you imagine what fuel he adds to this stupid fire when they find out that he is indeed an adult who designs games? Then, god forbid they take a look at God Of War?I can see it now, "Not only do video games cause you to become a mass murderer, they also turn our kids into blithering idiots."

Way to go Jaffe.

The staggering level of stupidity displayed by all parties in this makes me laugh.  I'm not sure what exactly blinds people to the truth, be it religion, culture, philosophy or just the wiring in our brains but it's pretty obvious that video games have nothing to do with violence in our culture.  In fact they are a product of us, the human being.

We are, at our heart, violent and savage.  We are animals after all and if history has taught us anything (and it should have) it is that no matter the time, the place, the culture, the philosophy or the people, violence of the highest order has always existed.  Your country, my country and every other nation on earth is guilty of it.  Not just now but throughout all of the time we have existed.

Have people forgotten that there we times we turned out in our droves to see people executed in the most vicious and unforgiving of manners? That we cheered it and made it a social event? No, it's not that we are violent at heart, it's that product of our innate violence (video games) that are causing our societal problems .

Funny how here guest says twice "there is no proof that video games make people kill people" and the **** reporter tries to change the subject to something else quickly and when he says it again at the end.. she says "thank you for taking your time and giving us some ugh uugh ugh provicative answers there" as she makes a squinched upset face , probably thinking "well that backfired".

The biotc2 was making things up. How horrifying it was to kill prostotiutes... well, you can kill anyone in GTA4, anyone, and take their cash, you never get points for it. And secondly you don't have to kill anyone but bad guys if you don't want to... its all up to you. The game never forces killing innocent people on you. Did this Biot_ch ever play a game in her life? Probably not , the stuck up snot, probably a rich girl who went to a top school on daddy's dime and looked down on all who didn't have a 6 figure salary or look like a model (just speculation as this lady makes me sick!!!)

The point isn't to change her opinion, it's to not make the industry and the people that enjoy it's products not look like fools. It's one thing for someone to think about you in a certain way, but there is certainly no reason to prove them right by acting like an ass.

lol you get "points" when you shoot a hooker in GTA. Obviously she has no idea what the game is. Also good answers, i got po by the Norway question, being a fellow norwegian and knowing the facts a little more than her is Breivik claimed he "trained" when actually all he was doing was being a loner

nice comeback, but i think his response should have been a lot more respectful because  as much as we know what we are talking about, acting hostille or combatative isn't going to get the other side to understand video games and gamers

Very good response, but to put Erin Burnett in her place is something of cakewalk proportions. She's an awful journalist with an awful show.drinkerofjuice

I've done my own reading into the scientific literature to see if there really is evidence for video game-induced violence. There have been dozens of studies done which have shown that adolescents do show increased agression after playing violent video games due to a variety of factors such as stress whilst playing the game, education, and their own personality traits (i.e. agression varies from person to person). I found one interesting study that actually correlates the amount of time playing GTA4 to moral disengagement (convincing oneself that certain morals no longer apply). I have yet to find a study which shows a direct relationship between video games and violence, but I do find the evidence pretty convincing that such a correlation could exist.

On the other hand, it has been found that co-op games have the opposite affect - they usually cause people to feel calmer.

Prove them right how? I don't see why anchors should be above hostile criticism, especially looking at the baggering this one was doing. If people care about the way he presented his argument than his actual points then that's their business. This isn't a first time mistake from the media, this has been going on since mortal kombat, and yet they still imply nonsense despite how much evidence says contrary. They deserve the harshest criticism possible, because they have enormous amounts of power and abuse it solely for self gain.

The News causes more problems with them glorifying the Killers for Ratings then any Video Game. I agree that a Violent Video Game could be the tipping point for someone but that could be said for anything, it doesn't matter what that thing is if someone is that mentally unsound that something like a Violent video game triggers them to massacre people then ANYTHING could tip them off be it by a Violent movie or book, or hell maybe someone said their a freak in the streets. David Jaffe Posted some Valid points however he conveyed them in a Childish way, if we are to educate people that the News is wrong then we need to rise above them and not join their Ranks by getting Angry and using words like *Your a Idiot* it doesn't help. Hes a Average guy that clearly has alot of passion for this Media I don't blame him for going alittle off like this, sure anyone would be annoyed if idots for bagging on your work and saying *It turns People Into Killers* thats horrible.

GD1551

You're missing the point.

Obviously the host doesn't deserve much respect, but insulting her while laying out an argument that's supposed to be logical is counterproductive. Staying impersonal always gives you an advantage in a debate, no matter how bad the other side is or how strong your points are. Getting hostile serves no purpose.

It's not like Erin Burnett gives a sh*t if she gets "the harshest criticism" anyway. Being on TV makes you numb to it.

To be completely fair, I think most people on this board haven't read the studies themselves. The studies that are normally cited that link video games to real life violence were pretty pathetic studies. Not only that, people take the results way out of context. "Zero evidence of any correlation means video games are fine!". People should actually read the studies. Furthermore, I'm getting sick of the gaming community's mob mentality. I hate the "off with their head!" mantra. Seriously guys, if you wanna school the anti-gaming agenda properly, be more tactful and compassionate.

To the people saying how Jaffe's tone will not change the reporter's mind: obviously she made up her mind a long time ago, and I doubt any rational arguement will change her mind no matter how politely it is presented to her. Jaffe made the right call IMO in making an example out of her, because people far too readily lap up the garbage fed to them by the MSM without questioning the motives behind their coverage.

An example to who, other mass media people who will never read it and wouldn't bat an eyelid if they did?

Or her viewers, who would be completely unsurprised that some guy who makes video games is calling her stupid?

As I wrote in my last blog, we are getting sick of repeating ourselves. We're getting sick of bring up valid points and statistics that show violence in video games does not correlate with violence in real life (aggression maybe, but not instilling the will to kill). It's frustrating to continuously go through this year after year, so I don't blame Jaffe for not conducting himself in a professional manner. However, he is a professional, and really should have thought it over before he clicked send. It's different when you just blurt something like that out over the air, but typing up something like that, you always have a minute to read it first.

I wonder how many of these people pointing the finger at games have tried playing them for a while. It might give them a different point of view. It's like when Mass Effect was being criticized for the little "sex scene" and Geoff Keighley asks the author critizing it if she's actually played the game, then she just laughs and says "Noo!" The host who was worried about the game hadn't played it either.

They Had a full on public enquiry over here in blighty and they failed to find any tangible evidence that linked video games to violence, they did, however, find a tangible link between gaming and bad Schoolwork,i do ,however, strongly believe in the age rating system and i think parents should do more to enforce that, letting a 10 year old plat GTA is not very good in my book.

I wouldn't say weak minded. They don't really care much for games. Why would they go and research it if it didn't really concern them. They have more important things to do

However, I can imagine this leading many others to shun video games in their household.

She pretty much owned herself in the interview with the psychologist when she tried to lead him with questions and failed miserably. Really all a non-gamer would take out of it is that GTA is a violent game but violent games don't cause violence....in other words: the sky is blue.

This, thanks to the internet, on demand TV and cable/satellite recording devices i never have to watch **** like this nowadays. Which is why these broadcasters/networks are on such an offensive against any other media but their own.

[QUOTE="nervmeister"][QUOTE="Pedro"]This thread is proof that gamers are generally viewed as teenage idiots and is the reason why David Jaffe and the majority of gamers opinions are void outside of the confines of their social network.Pedro
Now now, Mrs. Burnett. I know Jaffe was a little hard on you, but try not to take what he said too personally.

Try not to do such a good job in solidifying my point. :)

Well what response would of been appropriate to you then? jesus christ....

It's different when you just blurt something like that out over the air, but typing up something like that, you always have a minute to read it first.JustPlainLucas
I disagree with this mentallity completely. He is a proffesional games developer, not a customer service representative. someone who is passionate about the media he creates. Meanwhile the real "demon" of this story is conducting herself "professionally" infront of a nation spreading a hateful witch hunt. Everyone is so PC now that they think every professional should act like a gentlemen when it means NOTHING.
