There was a thread on the ol' PC board about the possibility of a console port of STALKER: Shadows of Chernobyl.

Just out of curiousity, for those console gamers who haven't played STALKER before, what is your perception of the game? What sort of game do you think it is? And finally, would you be happy to try it out on the ol' console?

I see it as some first person shooter on PC that PC fanboys want everyone to know about.

I figure that if was worth looking to I would have heard more about it from official sources.

I don't know much about it except that it's supposed to be a great game. If it was confirmed for a console port I'd definitely look into it.

It'll never work well on the console. It barely works well on the PC, lulz.... It's a series with great potential but in the end the games were a letdown.

I play all kinds of games, from Tactics Ogre, to Katamari Damacy, to Ico, to Halo. And you know what? The mainstream games are most often the best ones.

No no no no no. Mainstream denotes popularity NOT quality. If you stick to mainstream you'll never find your gaming preference (unless you happen to like only mainstream games, you'll never know though so why not try?)

kingfire11
Of course it would, the inventory system can be remedied by simply pausing the game when you access it. ala Fallout 3, Picking up weapons is exactly the same as fallout 3 really (look at the gun press A etc etc...) and its a FPS, which is universal for almost all platforms.. Map your guns to the D-Pad and bandages to the Bumpers, because that's all you will really need in STALKER..

No, I have not played Psychonauts, but have thought about picking it up. I don't see how that's less mainstream than katamari Damacy though. Psychonauts?

Ahh, but you see that list is not what I've played in my entire life, but what I happen to be playing at the moment. Here's some other titles I own that might not be mainstream, but what do I know. Nights wii Legendary Starfy Noby Noby boy Flower Rebelstar: tactical command *Looks at Sig* Yup, all mainstream...

Hmmm, Mount and Blade is a good example. It was made by 2 people, its not much to look at, but the gameplay is awesome and very fun. Its production values are a turn off initially but as soon as you start killing things you know what the appeal of the game is and then *BANG* 40 hours of your life have gone playing a simple RPG. You can get non-mainstream games with great production values that, unfortunately, get overlooked. Any Tim Schaffer game, like Psychonauts, as biggest_loser pointed out. Or games like Portal and TF2, which sold very well, but their ideas were terrifically innovative and clearly not aimed at a generic or mainstream audience.

I haven't heard a lot about those myself. But you would argue that they're still worth playing of course.

So whats the difference between that and STALKER? Since u said you haven't heard a lot about it etc.

I haven't bothered to look into it because I don't have a gaming PC. If I did then I would probably get it.

That's a rather close-minded viewpoint. The game was made in Ukraine, which is why it didn't get a lot of mainstream coverage. If a game doesn't get coverage, it doesn't make it bad either. Anyway it's up there with the best FPS released this generation. It's not a generic shoot-em up with a storyline penned by a 4 year old (like the CoD series), but it's definitely worthy of what praise it gets. I think if done right (with OL built in) the game will be excellent on consoles (although I can see it having seriously optimization issues).

lol @ all yall indiecred gamers, you guys are a hoot. 'mainstream games' hahahaha.

anyway, i dont think how well stalker would be accomodated by a console. its a really great game, and i would love to see a nice console port. everyone that likes moody and immersive games ought to pick this one up especially if you have a fascination with post-apocalyptic stuff like i do. it does the whole scene very well.

The new artstile made the game more interesting looking, but took away what little atmosphere the game had. STALKER has the strongest atmosphere this generation for me. It's probably due to OL, the dynamic lighting and weather, the brutal combat, and the RPG element.

The game's story might be more complete, and present itself well, but it's still a very simple and basic story. STALKERs is almost as basic, but the material surrounding it (lore, backstory, history, etc.) is what makes it much better in my opinion.

There can be as much backstory as you want, but I had this problem with FEAR, you still have to have a strong narrative in the present, not just exposition. And to also present it well. That STALKER still uses (mostly) text instead of dialogue in 2007 was embarrassing to be honest.

I guess it depends on the person. Text dialogue does not bother me at all. I can still play a game like Morrowind and feel that it's presentation is stronger than a lot of modern games. Same goes for a lot of JRPGs. I'm honestly worried more about the core gameplay of STALKER:SoC if they port it. I didn't find vanilla anywhere near as interesting as OL (Oblivion Lost, the mod that made the game like it was before the developers decided to get rid of a lot of the gameplay elements).

[QUOTE="ReaperV7"]I have it. Its average. Way to repetitive and so damn buggy. Great atmosphere tho. Thats about it. biggest_loser

Just a reminder. I'm kinda looking to see what console gamers know about the game, rather than those that have already played it! But thank u for your input monsieur! You are on my Xmas card list for certain!

I am a console gamer...but w.e...

I'm a primarily console gamer and I recently purchased it. My expectations were alittle different then what it was. I figured it would be like Fallout 3 but a little more action oriented and better shooting. It ended up being more like Far Cry 2 with a post-nuclear european theme. I love the atmosphere, the graphics are well done and run well on my entry level macbook (running windows XP via bootcamp). The shooting gameplay was not as good as I was hoping for. I still feel like combat is a little clunky. I have played for about 5 hours or so. However I am going to conference to Arizona for 5 days and will have a lot of free time on my hands so I'm planning on bringing my macbook and playing one of my steam games, I might just go ahead and try and finish this game (or one of the Max Payne games).

If it was released for consoles would you play it, and what do you think you want from it in comparison to your pc version?

Yes, I would definitely play it on console, mainly for the stream-lined controls. I mean aiming with a mouse is a lot better then aiming with a dual analog game pad but everything else I prefer to do on a gamepad (i.e. crouching, running, switching weapons, going into the inventory, etc.).

being a pc gamer i have only marginal interest in the game and have no real drive to play it. i've cut down on the fps's i'm interested in because all you need is tf2 and the yearly cod game.

All I know is that the game looks great and if they do port it, I'll make sure I get it.
