Mark Rein thinks so. Discuss

While the heated (and pointless) console vs. PC argument rages on in Internet forums, even big PC advocates at Epic are picking the couch over the desktop.

"I'm a real fan of the PC, but yes, consoles are definitely stealing a lot of hardcore gamers from the PC," Rein told Guardian Unlimited's Keith Stuart

"When [Activision's] Call of Duty 4 came out, I heard some of our guys sitting around talking about the great game they'd had last night and I'm like, 'Hey guys, what server are you playing on? I'd love to come and join you,' and they said, 'Just send us a friends request.' It was at that point I realized they were all playing it on console. Plus, the sales of the console versions are something like ten times the sales of the PC versions.

When Epic VP Mark Rein heard co-workers talking about a Call of Duty 4 match, he asked what server they play on. The answer? "Just send us a friends request."

Just look at some of the more hardcore PC games. Games like Civilization on Marathon mode, huge world size can last up to 14 hours in one sitting. Games like starcraft can go on indefinitely. Max flag caps in Battlefield 2 games can go on hours on end. Games on the PC generally last much longer, require much more attention, and generally appeal to a much more hardcore crowd. Especially games like Deus Ex and System Shock with their degrade weapon systems.

Comparing an arcade game with redundant gameplay to games like Civ that are constantly evolving is inherently flawed.

customisation, better hardware, better online, better graphics, excellent library of games. Basically if someone had unlimited money, puts lots of hours into gaming and had to choose only one system, it has to be the pc.

Wait he says Hardcore fans then mentions Call of Duty 4? What? 380k brick n mortor retail isnt that goodn granted.

He doesnt say the PS3 UT3 outsells PC version , because it doesnt, nor Orange Box, nor Bioshock.

How many modern warfare games are already on the PC? How many online shooters in the past 10 years?

So the FPs genre isnt as popular anymore, big frigging deal.

They are full on evolving games that can last hours on end, while providing unique experiences constantly. In general, console games tend to be more prone to shorter play times, while on the PC the vast majority of games require much more dedication.

My point is he's complaining about people being drawn to console gaming, but he's not helping them stay on PCs by making sub par sequels to once great franchises and building them for consoles.

Casual PC gamers maybe. I don't see how they can be taking away hardcore PC gamers. I am a hardcore PC gamer, and own all three consoles as well. The consoles surely have their place, but... I simply don't see how you can compete with...

1. Mods
2. The PC gaming community
3. Ventrillo
4. Allowing your game to evolveover time through patchs.
5. Community based-tournaments and leagues
6. UPGRADEABLE hardware, that lets you choose how powerful you want your system to be

I mean I could just go on and on, but it's pointless. If you are able to go from a PC gamer to a Console-only gamer... you were never "hardcore" to begin with, let alone "mainstream".

How are they being drawn to console gaming if the sequels are on PC's and consoles? Wouldn't they be just as disgusted with the console version of UT3? How would that make them want to play consoles anymore than they already did?

See, you're not making any sense.

Both, have you ever played a Civ game? They are different EVERY single time you play.

No matter how hard you try, you will never get the same reaction or situation twice.

Sometimes, Mark Rein says smart things, but other times, its like he is talking out of his a$$. I have been a harcore pc gamer now for almost 11 years and never once have I considered becoming a console gamer. I certainly tried, but I cannot stand playing on a controller. I make exceptions to playing with friends on consoles but I don't see myself owning one any time soon.

what's with this recent trend of labeling casual gamers as hardcore? Is it because there is apparently a recent surge in what people would call "non gamers".. are they taking the casual title?

I didn't say/mean complex. I'm saying PC games give you much more options and the PC community gives you even more. A game like Half-Life 2 with all its mods, tweaks and just everything you can do with it is infinetly better than any console game. Honestly as long as the PC has Garry's mod and consoles don't, I could never forsee myself straying away from my comp.

Hardcore is determined by how much people put into their particular hobby of interest. Thats where the words casual and hardcore are derived from. A casual person casually plays. IE, doesn't spend hours upon hours playing. A hardcore person plays much longer, extended time periods.

Well, then this Mark Rein is wrong.

If one was dedicated to PC gaming, it seems rather unlikely that he'd up and give it up overnight.

I always get irritated when people start throwing around casual and hardcore. I really think we'd all get along better if we just understood each other as gamers, and not having ranks decided by how long or how good or whatever.

But, perhaps that's because I've become more casual in my older days.

Yes, and what does that have to do with anything?

Are you saying the only hardcore game is Civilization?

No, it was an honest question, because I didn't know if they did or not. :P

And you were wrong, they haven't made a civ for consoles yet, but they are working on one. I just checked it out.

Umm, sorry, I guess them making Civ for consoles means, to me, that they make Civ for consoles. :?

But, by your definition, it's dedication. Which can be found with pokemon, ssb, halo, CoD4, etc.

I don't think consoles gamers want to dispute that.

Anyone who's played an MMORPG knows how hardcore PC gamers get...

Indeed, and I'm not saying a console gamer can't be hardcore. Relatively speaking, they just aren't as hardcore as PC gamers, if we compare the varying degrees of dedication involved in games on the PC and games on consoles. In general, PC games generally require more dedication.

Wtf? As long as you play videogames as a HOBBY and dedicate alot of time to it then you are considered hardcore. But hardcore hermits can't see that and think they are the "elitists" of gaming.

Well technically they do, but they haven't actually had any game out on consoles yet, and this is their first game. So I guess it's a twist of words.

On FFXI I've known people who actually got a divorce IN REAL LIFE because of in game drama, that's the PC difference.

Title is VERY misleading. There is a big difference between the term "Stealing Hardcore PC gamers" and "stealing Hardcore gamers from the PC"

Oh is it me or are FPS devs the only ones complaining about PC gaming dieing? Even Chris Taylor kept his mouth shut when SupCom did poorly.
