[QUOTE="lowe0"][QUOTE="Vandalvideo"]Yes, consoles, home of the casual games, is stealing hardcore PC gamers, used to the most hadrcore games known to man.....suuure.Vandalvideo
Happened to me. Consoles started getting the kinds of games I like (FPS), and the draw of being able to play with my friends (almost none of whom have gaming PCs) isirresistible. I find it highly unlikely that you, who spread PC misconeptions, was once a PC gamer.I was playing PC games back when you had to have your SET BLASTER statement memorized just to install a game (still have it memorized, actually: SET BLASTER A220 I5 D1). Don't pretend you know the first thing about me.
Started back in the day with Wolf3D and Doom. I'm such a Doom fan that I even enjoyed Doom 3 - apparently, a rare feat.
Played untold hours of Duke3D, Descent, Magic Carpet, MechWarrior 2 and Interstate '76. Followed the Mech license after Microprose took it over, and then as MS bought it and let it die on the vine.
Fondly remember System Shock ("pppanting and sweating... as you run through my corridors") and its sequel.
Half-Life is my favorite game of all time - Surface Tension, with that Osprey, is a total classic.
Thief? Wish I still had my copy; my ex lost it (still have Thief II on a PC Gamer disc where they gave away free games).
I survived the awful cheesy dialogue of both Max Payne and its sequel. And loved every second of it.
I was a huge fan of both Dark Forces and Jedi Knight, back when LucasArts made good games out of Star Wars. X-Wing? TIE Fighter? Oh yeah - anyone remember analog joysticks, back when you had to calibrate them all the time?
Quake, Quake II, and Quake III Arena are all still installed on my MacBook, with every expansion.
Played Need for Speed, BEFORE IT SUCKED. Anyone else here even remember that far back? )
In college, I played countless deathmatches of Action Quake (yeah, we didn't even have CounterStrike back then) and later, Unreal Tournament (I can close my eyes and navigate AS-Overlord).
Never really got into BF2 (every match on Karkand turned into a nadespamfest), but 2142 was a blast.
And yeah, I've played the newer stuff, too - Half-Life 2, Far Cry... I even bought Crysis, but since I spend my money on consoles now, my PC has fallen too far by the wayside to make it worth it, and I just don't see the point in upgrading for one or two games when everything else I want is on 360 and PS3. The only PC games I'm really still into are the classics I listed in DOSBox, and the stuff from Introversion (DEFCON), which I can get on my Mac.
So, where's your gaming history? I'm guessing it doesn't go back as far as mine.
