Having said that, if the lead was a vacuous supermodel/sex doll, I could see it being very popular.Planeforger
This, funnily enough. The only way a female lead would sell is if she were a dominatrix decked up in leather and/or latex, rode around on a motorcycle, and was into the ladies.
There is a reason why there is a big-breasted woman on the front of just about every GTA cover, and that's pandering. Rockstar knows who plays their games.
She couldn't be typically female emotional first of all. She'd have to have some sort of military or disciplined background to be taken any kind of serious. She'd have to have more depth than the rest of the characters but also pretty shady and edgy. She would've had to been through some serious tragedy and survived through it. She couldn't be oversexualized in the story, otherwise it takes away from how serious people would take her. She's gotta be the type easier to make friends with guys rather than girls. Rockstar would have to come up with a plethora of clothing for her, unlike their weak selection in GTA4. They would have to work on hair and boob physics.
But for real, like it or not, Rockstar would have to give a woman serious credibility otherwise the audiece won't take her seriously and take away from any believability. It's just how it is.
NO..im a female and i wouldnt want a lead female in any gta..first this game is more advertised toward men..Sorry but not that many men like to play as females..also you have to get rid of most of the violence in gta..females cant rough up a group of men..this is fact...and gta roughs up a lot of people..you can forget about the prostitute part as well...how many females buy sex? no where near as much as men..jsolidus
I'm a male, and I dont beleive youre a female.
the series could become even more controversial for the media. But I would welcome it as Rockstar could use it in a very fun way in terms of gameplay, story and characters.Maybe she could be a lesbian?

Gamers and their obsession with female characters
I swear, no one would have thought Beyond Good and Evil was a hidden gem if the lead character were a male.
I don't care what GTA V's main character is.
vashkey
Beyond good and Evil is a gem because of its gameplay and not because of Jade.
Why wouldn't it be?
GTA I, II, & III - Claude (Caucasian)
GTA: Advance - Mike (Caucasian)
GTA: Vice City - Tommy Vercetti (Italian)
GTA: San Andreas - Carl Johnson (African American)
GTA: Liberty City Stories - Toni Sipriani (Sicilian)
GTA: Vice City Stories - Victor Vance (Haitian)
GTA IV - Niko Bellic (Serbian)
GTA IV: The Lost and Damned - Johnny Klebitz (Jewish)
GTA IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony - Luis Lopez (Dominican)
GTA: Chinatown Wars - Huang Lee (Chinese)
I'd have no problem with a female character.
I think it'd be cool to have five main characters,
Four being the originals: Claude, Tommy Vercetti, Carl Johnson, and Niko Bellic.
The fifth being the new one - the rumored female.
Actually, I'd like to see that. Look at commander Sheppard. A lead chick who plays by her own rules, that would be pretty hot.
Hell, give her a family to feed, a bad deal, and bam you have a killer story.
An option would be ideal, but a female character would certainly be an interesting perspective. I'd expect a more emotional, character driven story with better reasons for being in the life of crime than Niko's. Being a female in a predominately male "business" she'd have to be tough, smart, and persistent. I think that's a much better character than what Rockstar has previously done. I actually hope it happens now!
I think so because it would add something different to the series and who doesn't want to play as a bad a** female character.
Someone who wants to play as a bad ass male character? gamers and their love for female characters is weird to me. most ppl that play gta dont get turned on by video game characters like you gamespoters do. i want to play as somebody i can relate to. no game or movie that had a woman as a lead role was ever successful.I think so because it would add something different to the series and who doesn't want to play as a bad a** female character.

I think it would be weird playing a realistic female (not like bayonetta) character and going around killing people.
The bro-gamers would reject it. And Rockstar can barely write a male lead well. A female lead (with depth and feeling) would be out of their creative league.foxhound_fox
Sorry bro, Rockstar are fantastic writers, especially when Dan Houser is on board (pretty much all Rockstar games). Rockstar is the only publisher/developer consistently cited by flim industry vets as something of a rare quality in video game story writing.
Now what I would like is for a gamer to find the correlation between the gamers' perception of Rockstar games (overrated, boring, bring back fun gameplay etc) and the non-gamers' perception (brilliant, cinema worthy, writers should work for Hollywood).
screw a female. they need to make the main character a hispanic person. there are very few cool hispanic protagonists :(mems_1224
Hear hear!!!

I disagree with you. Ever heard of Lara Croft? I'm just saying Tomb Raider is one of the most successful franchises in gaming history and Lara is a icon. And what about Samus, Metroid is a popular franchise with a female lead that has been successful.

SA is the only Rockstar game with good writing and a good story
GTA4 story was cliche and generic, the writing was decent, same goes for RDR
Is she going to be hot and will there be clevage? In all seriousness though, it wouldn't work. Just about all GTA characters treat women (hoes, as they call them) like **** and it would also make for some cringe worthy scenes with the protagonist trying to act all tough.

All of them have good writing and a good story. The same guy pretty much wrote all of them.
San Andreas, while as good as any of the Rockstar games, I'm going to have to point out is definitely a lot more substantial with its plot compared to the others. GTAIV was consciously scaled back probably because of this. Just an opinion, I find gamers' taste in stories to be a little poor, because they value spider-web plots and near convoluted storylines. They can't seem to appreciate a slim, trim archetypal hero quest done well, because it automatically makes it generic and clichéd. Just compare what gamers consider some of the best video game stories ever, then compare that with what critics consider the best films ever, as well as the best written novels ever. You'll find gamers' tastes are way off tangent.

Actually, if they did a character like Bonnie from Red Dead Redemption, it would be really awesome. Bonnie was one of the better female characters I've encountered in a video game.

I wholeheartedly agree.
Bonnie was awesome; I was so disappointed when she practically disappeared from the story after I rescued her -- really loved her character.

There's Dom from Gears of War. He's not exactly "cool" though :P

I've always wanted to play as a cool Black lead character like Will Smith, Denzel Washington or somebody like that.
But in today's games, most Black characters portray the "tough guy" stereotype. Or they're some goofy-looking guy used for comic relief, like in FFXIII.
I generally don't care about race when it comes to games, but I honestly don't see why it's so hard for devs to include other races in their games.
As long as it's not Resident Evil 5, they won't get negative attention. :P
