Number of PS2s sold = 111.25 Million

--> MGS 2 = 5.56 million sold

111.25 million / 5.56 million = 20 (rounded)

1 MGS2 sold for 20 PS2s :lol:

--> MGS 3 = 3.96 million sold

111.25 million / 3.96 million = 28 (rounded)

1 MGS3 sold for 28 PS2s :lol:

Number of PlayStations sold = 102.49 million

--> MGS = 5.51 million sold

102.49 million / 5.51 million = 19 (rounded)

1 MGS sold for 19 PS2s :lol:

Cows need to realize that this "popular" franchise is not all that popular given the attach rate.

Halo and Halo 2 outsold MGS2, the best selling of the MGS games.  Do cows realize how pathetic this really is?

Number of Xboxes sold = 24.65 million

--> Halo = 6.43 million sold

24.65 million / 6.43 million = 4 (rounded)

1 Halo sold for 4 Xboxes

--> Halo 2 = 7.89 million sold

24.65 million / 7.89 million = 3 (rounded)

1 Halo 2 sold for 3 Xboxes

It is called attach rate cows.  See, MGS franchise "seems" popular, but it really isn't when you use attach rates.  See, PlayStation and PS2 outsold Xbox by over a factor of 4.

If Xbox sold as much as PS2...

111.25 million / 24.65 million = 4.51 (rounded down)

1 Xbox sold for 4.51 PS2s sold

This is where it gets hilarious cows...

If Xbox had sold as much as PS2

Halo = 28,999,300

Halo 2 = 35,583,900

So, cows...You will have to forgive me when I :lol: when you say "Teh Metal Gear Solid franchise is teh incredibly popular!  Watch out lemmings!  The resurrection of PS3 is coming when teh MGS4 releases".  I read a post in a thread the other day that said something along the lines of this..."60% of lemmings will buy a PS3 for MGS4". :lol:

Get a clue cows.  Metal Gear Solid franchise is not nearly as popular as you think it is.  It never was.  By the time MGS4 releases, PS3 will have sold MAYBE 12 million at this rate.  Do you really think MGS4 will sell as well as you think it will?  Think again cows.  The franchise hasn't gained ANYMORE popularity since MGS1.  Look at the attach rates.

These are the cold, hard facts.  Super Smash Bros. Melee outsold all MGS games.  Gamecube only sold around 21 million.  MGS2 was on PS2, a console that sold over 5 times more than GC.  MGS2 STILL sold less than SSBM.

This is a wake up call for every cow thinking Kojima is going to save the PS3 miraculously.  This is a wake up call for every cow who says that MGS franchise is uber popular.  It isn't.  Two very popular franchises are Super Smash Bros. and Halo....their attach rates prove it.  MGS franchise attach rates prove that the "popularity" of this series is actually kinda laughable.

Nothing the picture is Francis Ford Coppala (sp?) It came from a MGS artice from Kotaku. But it is how I feel about avid's useless rant on attachment rates. Hayter is more than a voice actor. He is alos a screenplay writer. Ever hear of the movies X-men 1 and 2?

Not really. The PS2 had over 70 games which sold over 1 million. I think calling a game with over 1 million sales popular is overkill.

Funny that, considering that Halo is Microsoft's flagship series, whereas MGS is just a very well-liked franchise that's mostly on Sony consoles. How much do you think Super Mario Bros, Nintendo's flagship series, sold back in the days of the NES and SNES?

And sales like those of the MGS series are nothing to sneeze at. Most series never reach a fraction of that success and critical acclaim.

Its true cows hype the game up too much like the people who play Madden, NBA 2K, and GTA are going to run out and buy a PS3 for MGS4. The game is too weird and the gameplay sucks so bad its hard for casual gamers to get into it. Who can stand all that mindless blathering and the ridiculous overcooked sap about the life of a soldier. Just shut up and fix the camera already Kojima. We better not have to wait until MGS4NOTSOSUCKY before they put in a third person view like SC. I don't know why he took out the virtual missions. That was a good way to adjust to the game's bizarre AI before having to hear some idiot scream SNAKEOOSAN YOUZA DEADOO! everytime you screw up. The sad thing is you can just run through most of the levels in the game until you trigger one of the half hour cutscenes.

How exactly did I fail?  Cows claim the MGS franchise is incredibly popular.  It isn't that popular based on the number of PSs and PS2s sold.  GTA IS VERY POPULAR though.  Using attach rates = no fail.  Yes, PS2 had more games on it than Xbox.  Yes, there were more titles to choose from...but that is still a pretty weak argument overall.  Xbox had plenty of titles as well.  How is it not complete ownage when SSBM (on a console that sold over 5 times less than PS2, and had less advertising as well) outsells EVERY MGS GAME on Sony consoles?

I'm not saying sales are bad in any way.  I'm just saying that the franchise isn't even close to being as popular as has been stated by cows.  That was the main intention of my original post.

Honestly I don't see what the big deal is. I played a couple of them and can't stand the MGS series. I tried Splinter Cell and don't like it either. Actually I dislike the whole stealth genre.

i dont see how you can claim ownage about MGS being unpopular. Hideo is a genius and he knows the consumers he wants to target if you dont like it dont buy it simple as that. I think MGS is a really good game series I have always enjoyed sneaking games MGS has always been my fav. Splinter cell to me was cool but got 2 repettive. i also thought it was kina lame how you could be standing up and 2 inches away from a enemy but if you were in the shadows you were still ok. even the 3 green lights were invisible

this is what ive been telling people, lol. i hate MGS. it was neat the first time on ps1 (and no, it wasnt neat on famicon - it sucked ass) but every single game since then has been the same thing -- when an enemy soldier finally notices boxes moving across it's patrol line i'll start to appreciate MGS, until then it's what its always been, a game for teenage boys.

Halo 2 sold over half of MGS3's total sales...IN ONE DAY!  This on a console that sells 4 times less than PS2 :lol:

I'm not crazy about the Halo franchise, but this is still ownage.

Dude relax :lol:

Don't change it, it's a cool avatar. I had it for awhile, until GS changed and blow up the Avatar images. I didn't feel like adjusting the Shining size, so I switched to the Kubrick image I have now. I just thought I was the only one having that Shining Image, that's all. I wanted to be original as possible.

Keep it, don't worry what I think, I was just kidding. Like I said, No offense :)

Even if that's true, I could care less, but I see a lot of MGS fan so if I go by that your numbers mean less.

i think theres just a larger percentage of MGS nerds online to be honest. most people i know aren't too familiar with the game or even know its coming for PS3 --- the people i know that are looking forward to it are people i know that have had wetdreams over this game since PS1. trust me, mgs is not a system seller. if it was the psp would be doing better, lmao.

AvIdGaMeR444

I'm not saying sales are bad in any way. I'm just saying that the franchise isn't even close to being as popular as has been stated by cows. That was the main intention of my original post.

It seems to me like you're comparing sales figures using ratios and whatnot. To putb things in perspective, the PS2 has several big-name franchises on it, including a LOT that cater to casuals. I'm sure that several PS2s were bought by parents because it has games like Cars, Barbie/Bratz games, Ice Age etc, despite how much they might suck. Halo is a great game, but let's be honest, how many other major heavy-hitters on the Xbox can you name? I'm not going to go so far as to be a fanboy and say 'lol, everyone bought an Xbox just for Halo', but it sure is looking like Halo is by far the biggest series on it. By contrast, there were a lot of other major titles to choose from on the PS2. Sony has no flagship series, but a lot of great ones (though it's looking sketchy at the moment with the PS3, to be fair).

It's like the idea of being the biggest fish in a pond, as opposed to being a large-to-medium sized fish in a lake.

That's actually really popular buddy. Attach rate ratio doesn't mean anything because many people prettymuch buy Xbox for Halo.... yet the main game that defines the system only had about a 1/3 attach rate. MGS is just one of many popular and big name franchises on PS.

Actually, you're right, mobile phones really shouldn't count as systems.

Number of PS2s sold = 111.25 Million

--> MGS 2 = 5.56 million sold

111.25 million / 5.56 million = 20 (rounded)

1 MGS2 sold for 20 PS2s :lol:

--> MGS 3 = 3.96 million sold

111.25 million / 3.96 million = 28 (rounded)

1 MGS3 sold for 28 PS2s :lol:

Number of PlayStations sold = 102.49 million

--> MGS = 5.51 million sold

--> Halo = 6.43 million sold

24.65 million / 6.43 million = 4 (rounded)

1 Halo sold for 4 Xboxes

--> Halo 2 = 7.89 million sold

Halo = 28,999,300

MGS franchise attach rates prove that the "popularity" of this series is actually kinda laughable.

http://vgchartz.com/worldcons.php

AvIdGaMeR444

Lol I can't believe that you are actually using vgchartz as your reference material... that pretty much self owned you there.  Secondly, by your "attach rate" logic, If I had made a bottle and sold it to one person, then made a bottle cap that would only fit that bottle and sold it to one person, my attach rate would be 100%.  Are you then saying that my bottle cap is more popular than the Halo and MGS franchise?  I wouldn't call the Halo franchise a choice purchase so much as a lack of options.  You not only made the mistake of reminding everybody just how many more PS2's were sold than Xbox, but you also fail to note that those 115 million people had so many more good games to chose from, and yet still the MGS franchise managed to retain such a strong fanbase.

Also "If Xbox had sold as much as PS2 - Halo = 28,999,300 - Halo 2 = 35,583,900"

You really believe that do you?  If Xbox didn't come out then Halo = 0 and Halo 2 = 0.  That's just how ridiculous and speculative that was.  Clearly nobody else wanted Halo bad enough to buy those extra 85 million consoles ey?

according to the stats the TC posted -- no, no they don't. if you'd read it you would have realized that and wouldn't have just posted that question ;) MGS is a kids game, like it or not. it doesn't require any real gaming skills, its usually 'rail play' so it's all pre-determined to a large extent, and the bosses are usually laughable as is the story. i'm sorry, but MGS is for the most part a nerd game -- your friends might be casuals, but whether or not you'll admit it, they're also nerds :)

edit - im not slamming kid games, i own a wii, i like mario games, etc. its just that im close to 30, i know an assload of gamers - some of which actually write the reviews you guys argue about, and none of them are hardcore mgs fans. the only hardcore mgs fan i know runs a comic book store - not that there's anything wrong with that ;) just sayin.

I hate when people (no offense TC) "steal" other user's Avatars.

I had that Shining avatar 3 months ago. :evil:

VERTIGO47

WTF!  Who are you? I'll change it if you want though.  I didn't "steal" it like you suggest I did.  I found it in Google Images.  BTW, if you aren't using it anymore, then WTF do you care if I use it?

Dude relax :lol:

Ok, cool.  Sorry for freaking out.  In off-topic forum about 4 months ago, I had a guy THREATEN ME saying he would do everything in his power to get me banned because I happened to use an avatar he had.  I actually got suspended for it for 3 days with the "intending to solely annoy user" comment from a mod.  It was so annoying.  I think that is why I was so uptight to your post.  I wasn't sure if you were joking or not.  Glad you were only kidding around.

Sony doesn't depend on one franchise to survive, it's kinda risky almost like depending on one computer in a business office.  I'll give credit now that it has Gears to depend on now, but I heard the 3rd Halo is the last.  This I think is a smart move, just incase the franchise could degrade later on.  Sony has a little more exclusives to depend on.  Like FF XIII, MGS4, Lair, etc etc you heard it all before.

Ok I guess me my friends and MGS fans are nerd kids. I have fun with it and like the plot and everything else so if that means I'm in that category to you so be it.

You know all that is not true though.Â
