mirrors edge's lighting isnt even close to crysis dude, doesnt even have day and night cycle, cant pick up lightsources and cast shadows, and the shadows look crappier.

goodtobeback

Who said it needed one? Not all games need a day night cycle. Plus I think you need to play Mirrors Edge on PC man

also yeah. people are saying the ue3 is really out of date. what im thinking is, developers can spend more time with that engine and make games that can still push (or get close to pushing) visual boundaries in gaming today. its a very flexible engine, so i dont see where the hate's coming from.yellosnolvr
I always find the "unreal is outdated" thing funny, it is advancing very fast compared to other engines, for example one thing most people dont know is that it now supports DX11 now, with tessellation and all that fun stuff.

I think some people are just sick of it being used in a ton of games. I don't know why, it is a nice engine.

tbh, i cant think of a single game that wasnt received well by the general population (aside from the ball) that was using the UE3. but you know. haters gonna hate.

Metro on DX11 says hey sup

1. Crysis and Metro are tied to me to be honest (cyrsis is more open though)

2. Mirrors Edge

3. ARMA2

4. Napoleon Total War

5. Uncharted2 or Heavy Rain

Think those are the best graphics personally.

In all honesty I think after Crysis and Metro its a toss up.

No it doesnt have a day night cycle. It is static, but it is unified, it casts dynamic shadows for characters and objects. Crysis beats Mirrors edge on being a dynamic lighting system. But as has been told many times before the static environmental lighting of mirrors edge is higher quality. You need to understand this, it isnt arguable. It is fact, even Crytek themselves have said that precomputed is higher quality than dynamic. You have no argument.

[QUOTE="ferret-gamer"][QUOTE="yellosnolvr"] this is exactly why its one of the best engines (if not the best) due to its extreme flexibility. it came out right before dx10 and vista came out, didn't really fully support dx10 (as far as i was aware of) at launch, but now is supporting dx11. and to say its advancing very fast compared to other engines is an understatement. ue3 has evolved into a whole new engine, if you compare it to cryengine 2 and source. i dont even think cryengine 2 supports dx11 at all(mainly because of crytek saving it for cryengine 3...but still..), but thats just further proving that its superior due to the time spent on it by epic making it evolve into a whole new engine. tl;dr version: ue3 doesn't deserve one bit of hate on either the engine itself or the game that it powers.

the fact that mirror's edge doesn't have dynamic lighting has been acknowledged. it doesn't need dynamic lighting, therefore the pre-baked static lighting works perfectly for what the game calls for. its a matter of what game looks better now, rather than what each game is capable of.

*Cracks knuckles.* Lets end this argument once and for all. So mistergoodtobeback, would you argue about what Crytek, the makers of Crysis. Say in regards to their own game and dynamic vs precomputed lighting would you?

I thought not. So here is something right out of Crysis 2's GI technology paper, written by crytek. Again, the people who made crysis.

See that little thing called Lighting quality, where they state that Lightmaps are higher quality than their dynamic lighting propagation. Now you want to know another thing?Lighting propagation is much higher quality than what Crysis 1/ Warhead use, Yet lower quality than a static solution like Mirror's edge.

/Argument.

I was refering to crytek in general when i said makers of crysis, free radical was the only addition to crytek post-warhead era. But quit trying to skate around the point, crytek themselves are contradicting what you have driveled on about. Regardless of whether warhead was made by budapest or frankfurt, the devs views arent going to be drastically different on such a rudimentary subject like this, no self respecting dev would take your postion on the subject.

I am not sure why no one has brought up Mafia 2 yet.

It looks great on PC.

So, Crytek, John Carmack, and just about every game dev around and common sense are all wrong? How could they not of realized this before? your awe inspiring logic has opened everyones eyes

Lightmaps and prebaked GI can produce much higher quality lighting than any dynamic lighting system, why dont you look out side once in a while, study how light interacts, then come back, and while you are at it why dont you look up how each type of lighting works before continuing arguing.

Any method that pre-calculates lighting has the opportunity for much much higher quality than a realtime implementation. You're talking about the difference between taking a few milliseconds to render and a taking minutes or even hours. It gives you the opportunity to support things like GI and soft shadows without compromises or hacks. The obvious downsides are that your quality is tied to how much memory you use to store your lighting (whether its in light maps or per-vertex), and also that the artists may have to deal with long iteration times. The latter reason is why CryTek is all about doing everything in real-time...because they want their editor to be rapid-iteration with real-time editing.

Metro looks amazing, but like I said earlier, the human characters really let this game down. Crysis has the best characters for miles around. It does so many things well even that it gets free pass on the things it does poorly. Low res textures are only one of the things, especially on the ground textures. I hate how the edges of leaves are always jaggie to some degree, even on high. And draw distance, draw distance, draw distance. That first image shows exactly what I mean. Look at the detail on the beach shot.

Mafia looks good too but not quite as good due to lower res textures. You can see it on the clothing.

Ive only played the crysis demo maxed out... but its incredibly ugly. I would venture to say many console games can beat it... not on technical merit, but in just overall visual appeal.

is the crysis everyone drools over a modded version? Is there anyway i can experience it without buying anything? because i have no desire to actually play the game, just wanna look at it.

just mod the demo if you want, basically anything for the actual game will work fine on the demo.

Alright, ill give it a shot. Its the "natural mod" that everyone likes, right? or is there something better now?

although i only have a gtx 460, so i dunno how much better i can go... was surprised it was even struggling to maintain 30fps on the crysis demo. I only got it a few days ago, but hopefully there is some room to OC (certainly runs alot cooler than my 8800gtx). I was a little let down after upgrading... Does crysis require an SLI setup to appreciate?

try and see if the "maximum immersion" mod will work on the demo. And the gtx 460 is an overclocking beast. Crysis doesnt require SLI or anything its just really demands, especially with AA.

360 controller on black ops pc doesnt support aim assist or rumble....no aim assist support is badass i love it, no rumble kinda sucks, but not a big deal.

ill give it a shot tomorrow... its been a long time since ive tweaked my components... i had to relearn how to properly OC my cpu so i could make sure it could keep up with the GPU. My 8800gtx was a factory overclocked version, and i remember it being a nightmare even trying to squeeze an extra ounce of performance out of it.. i couldnt even OC a single fps out of that thing and have it be stable... so i have even less experience OCing a gpu.

but the gtx 460 does run RIDICULOUSLY cooler, my old 8800gtx was a serious hot ball of lava even when idling. I hope these graphics are as sexy as hermits have been telling me :P
