The feel of a threatening environment weakened later on, mostly because you gradually became vastly more powerful than your beginner self, while the enemies and anomalies all around the place didn't build up as much. Enemies went down faster, you were tougher, .etc.

I'm not sure if it'll happen in the mod - I'm only slightly above starting-level firepower. And the "blowouts" I mentioned in my blog occur randomly and will harm you badly no matter how good you are or where you are, though.

skrat_01

Pretty much. You became a walking tank in Stalker- as long as you had the G36, and the enviroment really didnt get any more threatning -perhaps less threatening towards the end. Heck I was expecting Pirypat to be mutant ridden, instead it was more like sniper alley.

Though yea the Blowouts really seem to add that sense of vunerability - I wonder how the a.i reacts to it.

It did get a little bit tougher everywhere - enemies spawned slightly faster and there were a little more of them all around the place, lategame.

But eventually getting the exosuit and g36 essentially made you a human APC, yeah. Only problem was you couldn't run - and replacing an exosuit is hideously expensive.

Oh and on to blow-out NPC reactions... spoiler warnings.

The maker of OL hasn't modded the AI response much - they only crouch on the ground with their hands above their heads, shaking in fear. I doubt the blowouts even affect them in any negative way other than temporary disability - but then, it would be hard for any NPC to stay alive if there was.

They don't carry sufficient amounts of vodka, antirads or medkits to survive the superconcentrated radiation burst - and since the damn thing affects you the same no matter where you are, they won't be able to protect themselves using buildings.

Oh and remember the problems people had with weight and all that? You can drive vehicles in OL1.005.

Gamespot overrated it a bit IMO. Good game though.

Nitrous2O

At the point in the thread where you posted, it's hard to tell if you talking about Crysis or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. :P Neither of which were overrated IMO, both were about as good as it gets from last year.

Something like BioShock though, now we can most definitely talk overrated (yet still a decent game).

I mean Crysis (haven't played Stalker). I'm playing through it a second time now and it just seems the main things it has going for it are the graphics and being able to go anywhere you want, something I haven't experienced before in other shooters. But to me, it doesn't quite have the same level of fun I've had with some other shooters for some reason.

What can I say, the mod certainly seems to bring back what was in the original design of Stalker - vehicles and all.

Very interesting indeed.

Halo 3 isnt anything special at all. I never knew how generic if felt until I actually played the game a few days ago.

Besides, STALKER like I have said before was the best shooter in 2007. Not Crysis.

except the MP kicks the crap out of Crysis. You must remember when talking about FPS, MP has a say as well.

Well by that logic then System Shock 2 and Fallout wouldent even notable as some of the 'best games ever'.

Fact is the score doesent always dictate how great or bad a game is.
Otherwise we would be praising THPS3.

And sales dont dictate how good a game is. Go tell that to the makers of 50 cent bullet proof, and the makers of Pshychonauts that.

Yeah - the original Stalker was actually called STALKER: Oblivion Lost.

I think I'm turning into FrozenLiquid :? Why are we talking about STALKER like this anyway, in this thread which is about Crysis. Bah, who cares - I think hijacking is fun.

And thats just it, its all the game really has going for it. Exellent Multiplayer. Its singleplayer is nothing short of average, forge was nothing special, and the video recording and stat tracking was all good, but of course done plenty of times before.

Crysis mp was quite good - that being powerstruggle. Had plenty of depth and was fun to play, the only letdown was the terrible bugs.

Indeed COD4 and Halo have stronger multiplayer than Crysis, but Crysis's is still good in its own right.

yah indeed it was called Oblivion Lost initially - and the zone was actually an area full of alien technology - like an alien 'dumping ground', heck ive still got the magazines with tiny screens when it was first announced.

Though yah this thread has been thoroughly hijacked :P

While I agree that there are anomalies and sales dont always predict quality, go ahead and look at the Top 25 games of all time in terms of sales and tell me how many are classics.

Also, Crysis is number 23 on GR in All time FPS rankings. Just last year alone, Orange Box, BioShock, Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3 scored ahead of it (for the record).

So?

GameRankings dosent dictate which game is better, even so you would be totally missing the standards of each platform.

As I said, by that logic many of the best games ever would be 'worse' than many other titles.

Hmm... I doubt the creater of the OL mod can get close to what STALKER originally was - considering that modern games have to be made with much larger budgets than before, it's not going to be easy for a modder with limited resources to replicate a dream that an entire development team failed to accomplish.

Oh well, GSC can probably try creating that kind of game again, with their vastly bigger budget. Looking forward to STALKER: Aliens of Chernobyl. :P

Soooo what other standard do we go by? Your opinion? Im going on a multitude of opinions from people who love gaming. Are you saying that review scores are useless? I know they are all opinions, but for the most part the better games have higher scores. Are you going to disagree with that?

lol, well actually many changes to the game were because of the publisher - THQ - pressuring the dev team to get it out the door, making certain changes ect.

Which is why with all the money they made from the first they are making Clear Sky as they please - as independant developers.

Scores are always a good indicator, but not always the best. Of course they give better games high scores, but also many great games are underscored, and of course things like hype, marketing, the system ect. factor into reviews.

Just because a game scores lower, doesent mean its worse.

Crysis is eye candy, with mediocre (at best) gameplay.

It is so far in my book from the best FPS ever. Bioshock - Half Life 2, now there's some worthy games.

No, it means that more people thought it was of lesser quality than other games in the genre. We could do this forever dude. My point is Crysis is not the best FPS ever, and we all know that. I mean both Half Life's alone are better games. Maybe I am wrong, but with FPS single player I always look for immersion. How much does this game make me feel like I am in the middle of the action or world created for me? When I think of that, Half life, BioShock, and Call of Duty come to mind, all with successive sequels which have done the same. Crysis does not do this for me. It is a great technical masterpiece and it is definitely a quality game, but it is in no way the best FPS ever.

As far as MP is concerned, I dont think we have to debate that Crysis MP is just not up to snuff with CoD4 or Halo 3 or even CS so its a moot point.

I wish you could poll gamers who are at least 20 yrs old and ask them this question. My guess is Crysis doesnt even break the top 5. Honestly, I dont mean to bash the game because it is a quality game, and most likely if it came out in 06 it would have been the best FPS of that year, but with all the quality FPS last year, it just wasnt that amazing to me. The graphics sure are amazing though.

I wonder how the difficulty in the game will be managed though. If the player cannot even beat 4 bandits....

Yes its an amazing FPS. It also makes me laugh that people say it isn't that good even when they haven't played the game. The bad thing about the single player is it goes downhill early and doesn't really pick up. I have the most fun on the first few levels to be honest.

Crysis was overhyped garbage its also the last time I upgrade for 1 game.

Really the only fun level was the first one mainly becuase after that level everything gets boring and the alien ship level completely threw me off... how am I supposed to kill those floating squidish aliens at 13fps!

It was a good Idea but wouldn't have gotten more than a 8.5 if it weren't for reviewers get a semi over the games graphics.

Oh I agree with you, Crysis is far from the best FPS ever, though I do think its one of the better FPSs up there.

Crysis did immerse me, however it wasent the same way a game like Half Life or Bioshock did so. Crysis immersed me in its world with its technology, not just the visuals but the physics, a.i, animations, completely interactable enviroment and the open areas that gave you choice. The Nanosuit gave a feeling of being a 'predator' immersing me even deeper. Everything in the game was made to feel plausible and real, and to Cryteks credit i think they did an great job.

And yes as MP concerned you are right, Crysis mp is a fun secondary but it is indeed not as good as the competition. I have to give props to Crytek for making it interesting though - a mash up of C&C renegade, battlefield and the nanosuit, and i daresay its very fun to play. However it did lack the replayability of the others, and had some terrible bugs.

Personally amoung all the other shooters it stood heads and shoulders up there. Why? Simply because its one of the biggest step fowards the genre has taken not just technologically, but design wise also. Its a shooter that sets out to do so many things, and accomplishes most of it spiffingly. Games like COD4 or Halo 3 are very slick, well polished and presented, but gameplay wise they are almost relics - tight linear shooters, that dont set out to do much, which means there are less areas for error - that are done better by their predacessors. I'd give credit to Bioshock, problem is it wasent nearly as ambitious as it was originally set, and its a good example of having some great design ideas, but not fleshing them out - particularly the emphasis on 'moral' choices.

Crysis dosent have the spit and shine of the Orange Box, or the multiplayer of COD4, rather it sets out do expand the genre and do everything that all these other titles arent. Crysis is very progressive game, while its defiantly not the best FPS ever, out of the bunch last year it was certinaly the most ambitious - and certainly fulfilled these ambitions.

aliblabla2007

Well I do have a hunch it will be more system intensive... However GSC have probably optimised the engine alot better, and fixed it up - you get a good example of it with every Stalker patch - which have improved performance out of sight.

Honestly though if your system is that bad I reckon you should save some cash and consider an upgrade or overhaul - if it is your primary gaming platform :P

Holy crap, that mod looks insane. But download servers aint working :( Got any alternative servers?

Searched on moddb, but they don't have this one.

My god that mod looks fantastic.

Im downloading it now off the US server

It is fantastic. Everything is improved upon from the vanilla variant, and I mean everything. No exageration.

[QUOTE="sSubZerOo"] IMO its the superior fps (single player wise) to the recent slew of shooters (bioshock, CoD4, Halo 3 etc etc)..heretrix
Technically, yes. But it isn't more fun than any of them imo.

Well you cant really judge what is more 'fun'. I had more fun mucking around in Crysis, and setting up ambushes.

Heck dont get me started on the Sandbox editor! Playing through singleplayer levels in it - spawing enemies, friendlies, weapons, vehicles, items, or making my own level- its... fun!

Crysis is eye candy, with mediocre (at best) gameplay.

It is so far in my book from the best FPS ever. Bioshock - Half Life 2, now there's some worthy games.

if you're bringing up specifically gameplay and then mentioning bioshock as a superior game, you fail pretty hard. bioshock's gameplay was picked out as being the weak point of the game, as a last-second FPS - it was offset by a good story, great storytelling and an amazing atmosphere. half-life 2 though you could make an argument.
