Crytek's Cevat Yerli reveals to NowGamer that if it doesn't scale down, it doesn't go in...

In an exclusive interview with NowGamer, Crytek boss Cevat Yerli intimated that, rare though it is, on occasion elements which work on the PC version but aren't able to scale down to the consoles, simply don't go in.

We quizzed him on how different it has been working within the limitations of the consoles versus the unlimited ceiling approach adopted toward the original Crysis on PC. "If it runs okay on PC, but not 360 and PS3 yet," said Yerli, stressing that it's a rarity, he went on "there's only like one out of a hundred times that ever happens" but concluded that when that is the case "we don't do it."

However, he also makes it clear that the PC version scales upward considerably "there's a narrow band of core experience," he told us "which we pump through to all and then it's the engine which scales up and down based on the platform. And when I say 'up and down' it's more up on PC"

And presumably more down on consoles. Thinking about it logically, is that really surprising? "I really wanted to make it an intense blockbuster experience on console, and then scale up on PC because the engine can". He concludes.

Source.

Yay! :?

It's time to fact the facts... games are no longer made for PC first. Gone are the days that PC was the primary platform for any game.

Games are tailored for the consoles and then modified to work on PC. The glory days of having made for PC games exclusively are numbered. It's sad because I prefer gaming on PC.

That does not sound too bad. Not a big deal, I think.

I've been saying this for a while, but people let hype get the better of them.

It's simple, if something that affects the game doesn't work on all three platforms; then it gets cut, only effects are scalable across all platforms.

Having fun with your spin?

This is lowest common denominator optimization, it has nothing to do with consoles > PC; it is ensuring cross platform compatibility.

Well, since no PC can fully max out Crysis(there are some who can on Youtube), Crysis 2 will look as good the first. Not the graphical leap we saw with the first. But as good as the first.

Sure, if you take into account none gaming PCs when doing a gaming performance comparison...

You know that is faulty reasoning, shame on you for using it.

Exactly. I made this exact claim less than 3 days ago and I was cut to shreds for it by far more knowledgeable "tech" people. I won't go to the trouble of finding the thread, but I feel pretty vindicated. :P

Having not seen the PC version, we can't yet say what the visual disparity is going to be between the various platforms, but Yerli told us later on that the PlayStation version is nearly identical to its Xbox counterpart and that the PC is still very much the lead platform.

The heck you say. It was expected the scale would be smaller but still glad pc is the lead platform

It's always funny when someone spins lowest common denominator targeting as saying something good about their platform of choice.

They are essentially boasting they are the lowest of the low, that when determining the minimum capabilities of three different systems to ensure a game works on all of them; that they make up the majority of those minimums.

You're taking pride in a game having to be nerfed to accommodate the weaknesses of your platform.

Just like Capcom and Square Enix wanted to make money when they expanded into PC gaming.

That's the thing about the cross platform orientation of this generation, it works both ways.

It will still look "so great", you can bank on it. It will just be scaled back a bit on PC, and even more on consoles. I bet anything it still looks better than Crysis on PC.

Thanks to it's vast scale and enviroment interactivity. Areas where only 512 of shared RAM isn't ideal to work in.

Didn't he say maybe one out of a hundred things only might have to be scaled back or taken out? Might not be as drastic as most people here think.

Consoles are making gaming more affordable ($300 Xbox360/PS3 vs. $1000+ for a decent gaming PC) thus attracting a much larger audience which in turn leads to developers making more money which in turn leads to bigger investments in gaming. I fail to see how this is "holding gaming back". More money for the industry will only lead to better bigger budget games. The PC gaming industry is not a separate industry to the Consoles so the more money being pumped into one can only be good for the other.

I think they just broke even Crysis, im sure they made money on Warhead, but still not as much as they should have IMO. I think its great they went multiplatform, they can stretch their wings. I am a bit upset the PC is suffering but i will save my complaints until i have the game up and running on my PC. I am sure it will still look outstanding and leaps ahead of consoles.

Who's fault is that? Crytek are the ones who decided to go multiplat. If they wanted to keep their game the way they wanted, they should have just stick strictly to PC. Last I heard they made a healthy sum with Crysis and Crysis Warhead.

Lets not resort to name calling. OK prove me wrong tell me how to make a DECENT gaming PC for less than $1000 that runs Crysis in all its glory. I bet its still a hell of alot more than $300. So my point still stands.

Well to run Crysis "in all it's glory" doesn't require a mighty processor. Just a decent video card and lot's of ram. If you build it yourself, you can do it for about 600-700$.

They make it sound like they can't add the missing things in after the game is finished on the consoles. It's like they are trying so hard to not top Crysis 1.

[QUOTE="The-Mosher"][QUOTE="Islandbeats"] Consoles are making gaming more affordable ($300 Xbox360/PS3 vs. $1000+ for a decent gaming PC) thus attracting a much larger audience which in turn leads to developers making more money which in turn leads to bigger investments in gaming. I fail to see how this is "holding gaming back". More money for the industry will only lead to better bigger budget games. The PC gaming industry is not a separate industry to the Consoles so the more money being pumped into one can only be good for the other.Islandbeats

Why do idiots like you always think it takes $1000+ to make a decent Gaming PC?

Lets not resort to name calling. OK prove me wrong tell me how to make a DECENT gaming PC for less than $1000 that runs Crysis in all its glory. I bet its still a hell of alot more than $300. So my point still stands.

Look at my rig in my sig. I had most of those parts in there from 2007, the date when I built it. I can play Crysis or Med/High settings with that PC, and I know its well under $1000. Next time, try doing some research on PC Gaming before you spout out more BS. ;)
