Funny thing is that they almost did the same thing with DOA 5. They announced that they would tone down things with a more sophisticated sensuality and that they would focus more than ever on the fighting aspect. They even took the title of one of the songs of the game "I'm a fighter" as a motif to promote the game. By the time the game was about to release there was already and extra DLC pre-order bonus with swimsuits, the focus of the PR was mostly the soft engine. Then every female character had a skimpy outfit with the "I'm a fighter" logo, and there was an unlockable "OMG" boob physics option, plus like seven or something different DLC season passes with plenty of skimpy outfits scattered among the various versions the game had, some of which included destructible outfits.
@glez13: You’re right, though I believe the OMG physics didn’t make an appearance till DOA5 Ultimate. It’s the same bullshit all over again, and they’ll go back to fanservice when they want to sell DLC outfits because they know that’s where their money comes from. I don’t believe for one second they are gonna tone down fanservice. They made a killing off those DLC outfits and Season Passes, way more than they made from selling the actual games.

I've always thought of this series as the gaming equivalent of softcore porn, and equally as pointless. Real porn exists (as well as real women... allegedly), I don't know who's futzing around with these jiggly polygons or why?

For me, as the fighting aspect has always been crap and most of the characters pretty uninteresting I don't see the point of releasing one without the soft porn. Let the series die if you're not going to service the fans who got it where it is today.

You're assuming everyone that likes fanservice likes it for fapping purposes which is wrong. I have a real woman and "the hub" for when I'm horny. At this point, it's part of the game's DNA. It would be like taking away fatalities from MK. The series has been around since 1996, these guys practically invented 3D boob bouncing physics lol, and now people want them to drop fanservice? It's silly, why after 22 years of bouncing boobs do they feel like dropping a key part of their identity is the right choice?
Anyways, I'm not getting bent out of shape with this, there are other fighting games out there like Soul Calibur that look better and aren't trying to pander to SJWs. I just think it's silly for them to turn their backs on their identity, that's all. To be honest, the girls in DOA look more like underage schoolgirls with oversized boobs rather than whore-like. If the developers want whore-like, the women in the photo are it. ;)
It's a solid fighting game, so now that aspect can stand out more. Also, I like the zoom in onto the face feature that seems to have been added. Looks cool
The only counter-argument I have to that is, what other game is going to take its place then? Or do you think that it's - like zombie games - oversaturated and now no longer that interesting to their audience?
Personally I don't mind this either but I do want games to remain quite diverse and I always thought that DoA was kind of on the fringes of what was possible while still maintaining mass media coverage. It would be a shame if that went away for their audience. Though like you say, it doesn't seem like this will be a big change at all. In fact, they may be able to make it even sexier now with a bit more 'seriousness' and secrecy for contrast.
Bouncing titties aren't the only way to distinguish yourself in a market. Hell, maybe toning it down might allow other features of the game to rise to the surface and get noticed more.
As I said, maybe they're just tired of the jokes. It has been 22 years. You do something repeatedly for two decades, even if you enjoy it, you're going to eventually get sick of it too.
The series started out as a VF clone with breast physics and a reversal mechanic. The fighting mechanics have grown and the second game (on the dreamcast) became its own and its gotten better ever since. Multi layered stages, breakable items, great cast of characters, excellent gameplay and just all around fun.
I like a lot of what I've seen so far for DoA6, like the close ups of faces getting smashed and it looks like even more interactive environments, but lets not remove the scantily clad women (and men) as that's just as much of the series as everything else I've mentioned.
