you grind by killing and surviving. What game isn't grinding? I don't really see what your definition of "grinding" is. I could think of a million games that have no grinding in them. Most roleplaying games have grinding in them. Now you might not think you are "grinding" but you are. Whether you do a mission/job that kills X amount of Y monsters or you go out and kill stuff randomly, both are grinding. The part people are upset about isnt' really the grinding per se, its the fact no matter how good you are you are going to die....a lot. Supposedly it's unavoidable. Now that I have to admit is a little different than most RPGs. Usually I can last through entire games with only a couple deaths. In this game monsters one shot you a lot lol.[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"]I could think of a million games that have no grinding in them.JandurinYou can think of a million games? No. But suffice it to say that I can think of a lot of games that have no grinding. And I still want to hear if our definitions of grinding are the same.
I dunno... a triple AAA console action RPG?i really don't get what you ppl see in that game

And I still want to hear if our definitions of grinding are the same.Cherokee_JackI suppose the general meaning is: Any time you redo something that you know you can do purely for the purpose of buffing yourself in preparation for more difficult fights. My meaning is more broad. I feel like anytime I'm redoing something (because of death or whatever) is grinding. Take Mirror's Edge for example. You have to plan your path to progress, and you'll (I am anyway) die multiple times while trying to perfect your path and the actions needed to take said path.

But that's not grinding. Grinding is fighting enemies for the sole purpose of levelling to ease progression in the game, not as part of a task that the game specifies.

I see. I use the more general definition, which I think describes something different from your example. Level grinding in an RPG is something that can basically be set on auto-pilot. You'll gain levels for sure; it's just a matter of time, and that makes it tedius. Replaying parts in Mirror's Edge is actually honing your skills at the game, not just raising numeric stats so the game will give you an easier time of it.

Well.... the rumors about it being hard are absolutely true, the game will not rewardyou for rushing in blindly.... you need to take your time, there is a bit of a learning curve at the beginning, getting a handle on combat takes a little while, but once you do, it works just fine. Some enemies you can spend dueling for 15 min. or more, if you don't stay on top of them when their health gets low, they enemy AI will use healing potions.... and they seem to have an infinite amount of them.
You have to be smart about combat as well. I've only got a few hours into the game. I've defeated the 1st boss, but thats it pretty much. I took a break from it for this week though, so I could play through Uncharted & Heavenly Sword b4 Uncharted 2 releases.
I'd give the game a solid 9/10.... I'm not sure if things will change much, but the game seems to focus mostly on combat, and seems quite light on story & character development.
You've got the gist of it my friend. I did however appreciate the story for what it was. It's not really fleshed out but the characters you come across have lots of......... Character and the game has a great atmosphere from start to finish.
A few pieces of advice:
Get a bow. I recommend Viscous Compound Long Bow +5 (although it takes some farming). Other good choices are Lava Bow and White Bow.
Get some magic even if you want to be a Melee fighter. Soul Arrow made Flamelurker much much easier in my first game and my current NG+
Some faith is good too. Anti Magic Field must have and Evacuate (think hearthstone if you ever played wow) is just so damn usefull.
Get a spear (many people like the Moon variety for some magic dmg which incidently is also usefull against certain high phys def mobs. I use Istarelle however). There's certainly stronger and better weapons than the spears in the game but since they're low weight and VERY usefull in tight sorroundings you may as well keep one on you. It seriously sucks when you trying to murder something in a corridor with the Meat Cleaver :)
Here is where you go for DS info and I also recommend the 2 walkthroughs on www.gamefaqs.com since the wiki did'nt help me much with initial understanding of the game concepts compared to the walkthroughs. In other words, even if you don't want to have your hand held through the game, it's a good idea to gain some knowledge about how things work.
trust me, I wish I'd have known the inner workings of world tendency before finishing half the game.

Well thats what ive concluded with my short time with DS. The difficulty is kind of overblown. For example, in the first world 1-2, i died 6 times. I grinded a bit and then got through it with ease beating the boss.
EDIT: Doing the exact same thing that failed me 6 times. No strategy changes.

Well, instead of grinding you could have finished world 2-1 instead. Or unlocked some shortcuts in the other worlds. You shouldn't expect to finish the game completing one world after another. Switch between them.[QUOTE="shutdown_202"]Well, instead of grinding you could have finished world 2-1 instead. Or unlocked some shortcuts in the other worlds. Oh. Is that how your meant to progress? i thought it was finish one world and then move onto the next etc. So i should complete all stage 1s, then 2s etc? Regardless of that, i still dont think the games nearly as hard as people say.
I've leant DS out to my friend for the rest of the week but when i get it back, il go straight to 2-1. Thanks.

no, i think you're supposed to progress exactly as you see fit.im a harsh judge. the game has tons of faults and alot of the boss encounters can be exploited and beaten without virtually any effort. the final boss is a major let down also. i only gave MGS4 a 9.5 when thats my favorite game this gen and i have finished that 11 times. so a 9/10 is very good imo. lol are you two being seriouse here with those scores talking like they arent good?? hahahahahahahahaha![QUOTE="TheCoreGamer_"] dude why are you being so harsh. 9/10? r u serious, your playing the game for the 6th time and your going to dock it a point? 10/10 in your books by the sound of it.zarshack
A game where you simply go through a linear path I do not consider a grind. For example, Killzone 2 single player.. you just go from one stage to the next. Even if you should die it is just a part of the game. You learn from your mistakes and try again (with no benefits, meaning the in game character does not change). That is not a grind, as the other person stated with Mirror's Edge.Stylishlyso, even though you may spend the same amount of time and do the same sort of thing, having no in-game character benefits makes it so we can't call it a "grind"? i feel like improving one's actual skills and knowledge of the game can be grinding just as much as your character getting 50 more hit points >_>

[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"]i feel like honing one's real skills is the same as honing a character's in-game skills No, because you're not getting better at playing the RPG just by grinding a bunch of common enemies for experience. You're making the game easier by leveling and thus making your character do more damage, take less damage, miss less, evade more, etc. (speaking in general RPG terms). By increasing your own actual skills at playing Mirror's Edge, you're mastering the game as it is, not making it easier and using the same amount of skill to master the same thing (not that you don't gain personal skill as you play RPGs, but it's not as important as leveling). If in Mirror's Edge, you could sit there jumping over the exact same gap 50 times and then suddenly be able to jump higher, then it would be the same thing.Replaying parts in Mirror's Edge is actually honing your skills at the game, not just raising numeric stats so the game will give you an easier time of it.

Seeing some comments in this thread it seems like there's some kind of significant life lesson to be learned in this game. Now I'm really interested.

DS will probably score better..but I wouldnt be too sure about the game selling better..this is a Niche title through and through,I don't see this game appealing to the american mainstream.considering they will be turned off by the difficulty...Me Personally,I've had the game since July, and I think it's stellar.I would love to see this game be a top-seller,but I live in the real world.

I assumed that shutdown meant level grinding, though.
