....and PS3 get another GOTY game, 360 is left out in the dust

You'd think a game that implements better RPG elements, and focuses on the genre better would win that genre award... Odd, indeed. And don't get me started on that strategy award. Bah.
Stevo_the_gamer
So you think Hearts of Iron 3 should have won best strategy game as well? After all it was the deepest game in the genre this year.
I can understand why people think Sims 3 isn't a strategy game but it really frustrates me that people nominate Dawn of War 2 instead which is even less of a strategy game than Sims 3.
Nope, I would think that belongs to Empire: Total War. I'm not sure how measuring the level of depth is actually possible though. So you think Hearts of Iron 3 should have won best strategy game as well? After all it was the deepest game in the genre this year.

[QUOTE="Stevo_the_gamer"]Then how'd a game with light RPG elements beat Dragon Age: Origins for Best RPG? :?
Stevo_the_gamer
Because it won the best RPG of the year not the deepest RPG of the year.
It's not always the deepest game in a genre that represents it the best. If that was the case then Hearts of Iron 3 would have won Strategy game of the year and Arma 2 Shooter of the year.
Demon's souls are more of a flawless game than Dragon Age. Dragon Age goes deeper but not everything works as good as it should because of that.
Demon's souls is an RPG but it's not RPG parts in it that are the core fundations of the gameplay. It's more in the background.

Here's the explanation:
"The 2009 awards break down the top games of the year into categories based on genre. As games grow increasingly diverse and inventive and incorporate multiple facets of various genres, it becomes harder and harder to assign them to a single category, but we've done so here to the best of our ability. Therefore, our awards represent the best game in the genre, and not the game that best represents the genre it's categorized as."

really? this game doesnt appeal to me in the slightest....is it really that good?

i was also thinking the same before i bought this game. but man, this game is really awesome than i expected. if u2, mw2, ac2 wasnt released this year, i probably still playing this game. im on my 2nd playthrough right now and the enemies is more harder even on a pure white WT.

Bah.Stevo_the_gamerBetter rpg elements oh you mean using that awful combat system from BG2 which they had 10 years to improve or choosing 4 lines of dialogue all the time.

I believe the reason why DS won best RPG award because it broke away with tradition casual RPG games and tried new and innovative gameplay elements to RPG genre, whereas DA:O offered great traditional RPG game mechanics but offered nothing new.
>I believe the reason why DS won best RPG award because it broke away with tradition casual RPG games and tried new and innovative gameplay elements to RPG genre, whereas DA:O offered great traditional RPG game mechanics but offered nothing new.So why did Killzone 2 win best FPS if it brought nothing new to the table, or how about Uncharted 2--how did that win with no innovation? I really doubt that's the reason DS won. :Pfun-da-mental

HOI3 kicks the ass of Empire when it comes to strategy but it lacks the tactical battles of Empire. HOI3 is the better "strategy" game but falls when it comes to other things. The overworld map in Empire is a joke compared to the overworld map in HOI3 but that's all HOI3 has.

So HI3 has a better World Map? I'll take the tactical battles on land, siege, and naval combat thank you very much. That's what makes Empire so much damn fun -- nothing beats having thousands of soldiers march across a field getting hit by arty and then having a massive line-infantry combat war. Ha. Regardless, I honestly couldn't discuss with you the level of depth within HoI3 due too I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing it; twas on my Christmas list, but Santa did not deliver. So why did Killzone 2 win best FPS if it brought nothing new to the table, or how about Uncharted 2--how did that win with no innovation? You are probably undermining the fact that Demon Souls is just a game with few innovative ideas. The game has lot of depth and is awesome in almost every way, it has outstanding level design and atmosphere. Its combat mechanics and animations is way ahead of games like DA:O and Oblivion.[QUOTE="fun-da-mental"]>I believe the reason why DS won best RPG award because it broke away with tradition casual RPG games and tried new and innovative gameplay elements to RPG genre, whereas DA:O offered great traditional RPG game mechanics but offered nothing new.

Have you played any of the Europa Univeralis or Hearts of Iron games before?
I was trying to make an awfully bad analogy with HOI3 and Empire. HOI3 is the deepest pure strategy game (Dragon Age) but Empire which is weaker on strategy even if it works great also has the whole tactical battle gameplay in place that makes it the overall more interesting game (Demon's souls).
Yes I draw a difference between Strategy (overworld, planning and mico-managing gameplay outside combat)and tactical (battle) gameplay which is why I find it funny when people hate on Sims 3 not being a strategy game but then mention games like Dawn of War 2 instead which basically is a pure tactics game.
I can't understand why everyone likes this game. Everything I've heard about it makes it sound like something only a small niche would be into, but everywhere I go everyone's praising it. The success of this game has baffled me. I've always failed to see the appeal of dungeon crawlers. The idea of one that is horrendously difficult and unforgiving, and takes place in medieval dullness is wholly unappetizing to the point of vomiting being imminent.
What I can appreciate however is the innovative gameplay mechanics that are strewn about. Hope that stuff finds its way into games I'd have the possibility to enjoy.

If it's a good game, who cares if it only appeals to a small niche? Aren't simulators and sports games eligible for GOTY?

My mind is blown.
As much as I enjoyed Demon's Souls, I didn't think GS would go for a game that's doesn't have a lot of mass appeal.

Don't think I've seen either make a GOTY nominee list.. but I could be wrong.
I think they saw it as setting a better basis for future games, while they kinda see Demon's Souls as a one time fantastic thing. Maybe that's what they mean by it.So how in the world did Infamous get IPotY?

Metal Gear Solid 4 isn't a game with mass appeal either. It's the 4th game in a line of cinematic espionage games. Mass appeal isn't necessary. Demons Souls isn't really a niche game either. It's just an RPG.I can't understand why everyone likes this game. I felt exacly like you but I got the game anyways and I agree with Gamespot on GOTY. Try this game before passing it on because it's a gem much like the game in your sig. ;)
Well it's certainly worthy of the praise it gets. The thing about it being difficult is kind of tricky, It isn't really hard or unforgiving, it's just challenging in a fair way, unlike most games that cheapen the difficulty by either gimping the controls or giving you overpowered enemies to fight. The learning curve is the thing in this game, you have to figure out how the world works, once you figure that out, you see why everyone is praising it so much. It's one of those games that once it clicks with you, you will appreciate how good it is.I can't understand why everyone likes this game. I am still trying to figure out how Uncharted 2, and Ratchet and Clank.. Beat Dragon Age in voice acting and script.. sSubZerOoI didn't really think Dragon Age was all that good in voice acting. I mean, Duncan was the only voice that really stuck out to me. Shale made me giggle once or twice, but that was about it. Nothing mind blowing about the performances. I greatly prefer U2's vo.
