FFXIII suffered from the fact that Square spent about 5 years drawing cool concept art and then tryign to make a game around it. Bungee are doing the exact same thing with Destiny-- their presentation at GDC was absolutely woeful, and it's clear that they still have no idea what kind of game to make around all the drawings that they made. Some people only have to hear them say "it's going to be epic" to get excited, but for anyone with a fair amount of critical thinking skills, that is not enough.

Activision is probably sweating quite a bit right now. Bungee may have been able to pull the wool over the driveby gaming media's eyes for a few months longer, but the fact of the matter is that after all this time the only thing they have to show is some frankly unremarkable concept art. I can pretty much guarantee that Destiny is not going to come out for a very, very long time, and when it does, everyone will end up complaining about it just like they did with Final Fantasy XIII.

It's not like I have any fanboy stake in whether or not the game is good-- it's a multiplatform title, so it's in my best interest for it to be good. The problem is that I have no reason to think it will be good, because Bungee hasn't even figured out what the game they are making is yet, other than that they are trying very hard to make everything look as epic as possible.

Can you shut up, the heck did you miss when they mentioned merging changing the concept of single player and a persistent world to explore. Does that not scream open world MMO already and one of them even mentioned it in the presentation anywayz. The presentation was for Developers, not consumers hence the name GDC

A major difference I can see between the two is that Bungie at least talked about gameplay.  For the 5 years of development of FF13 all we got to look at was 1-2 CG trailers.

They would have been better off staying with Microsoft and being the Halo factory forever (not that Microsoft needs them anymore, if Halo 4's sales mean anything).

Creating a radical product doesnt read like a script from a book, it involves A LOT of experimentation, clearly something your brother doesnt and prob would never understand (Advocates for CTRL+C). Heck and people wonder why games are getting so boring, creators who understand innovation knows that in order to create something sustainable, you have to crash everything down and build from the ground up, one of the developers even mentioned it saying something different from Halo's tunnel vission narrative which would beg the players for exploration that would have them come back for more even 10yrs later. They are not just building a game, they are building a WORLD which is usually associated with MMOs

The game will be good. They're a top tier developer, no matter what the fanboys think.

it looks to me ur a but hurt hermit or lemming because the game is coming to ps3. until now the concept looks great and concidering how they made a fps gerne great on consoles and also there great history of AAA titles. i bet desitiny will be amazing and probably even better than halo.

It's a huge ambitious project, I would expect it to take a long time to make. Wait and see what they show at e3 before saying they have nothing more to show.

So because SE did it, Bungie will too? No offense but that's not the most sound logic. I have no clue how the game will turn out, but I'm not going to assume it will be because FFXIII was also bad. Also before you jump on and say fanboy or something, I have very little interest in the game.

I think it will fail to capture all of its vision in the end because of its ambitiousness. Usually highly ambitious projects have these kinds of snags that have some kind of negative effect in the game and the concepts and ideas its trying to convey.

Although I see it as being a prototype game for the concept and will probably be slightly underwhelming critics and user wise, I do think that overall it will still be enjoyable for any gamer.

Destiny looks awesome from what I've seen. Cant imagine it will be as much a disappointment as ff13 was to the gaming community, especially given the amount of ambition in the game. I dont know if it will be a long term success but bungie is a good dev.

Guess I'm the only one with TC here. No one should be excited for Destiny, at least not with what Bungie has shown so far. Showing a bunch of concept art is the worst way to debut a game. The concept arts say nothing about the actual game. We don't know what the gameplay is like, even worst, we don't even have a story or character to associate Destiny with. Concepts mean nothing to the final product. What they need to show is the actual game that transformed from the concepts.

Announcing a game can't be any more difficult than showing a trailer with content of the actual game and Bungie failed to do so. I really want the game to be good but if showing concept arts is the best they can do, Bungie has yet to convince me Destiny will be a fun ride.

Edit: Oh btw, nothing can really compare to FFXIII. That is game is on another level of its own.

FFXIII suffered because Square Enix took forever building their Crystal Tools engine, the irony being it was built to speed up game production but instead it just drastically delayed their ability to enter the Xbox 360 / PS3 generation of consoles. Since its release they've shown the ability to produce a FF games in good time, but Crystal Tools really delayed them initially. Destiny is Bungie's first game outside of Halo since leaving MS, they've had to build a team to work on the PS3 port, they're planning next gen ports as well, they're taking their time and that makes sense considering their starting a brand new IP, and it being important that IP makes a great first impression, and again it's probably going to take more time considering it's also a next gen game as well. There's no rush to have this out now, next gen doesn't even kick off until the end of the year.

Concept art had nothing to do with the failure of FFXIII. A game does not fail because you make a lot of concept art.

In the case of FFXIII it just hadf shitty writting, characters. So so gameplay and awful exploration.

I bet it will end up as a carbon copy of Borderlands, I could also read between the lines of how much Halo has had them forget about being able to make actual games. Their whole conference was duuuuuuuude check out this concept art!

Borderlands is one of my favorite games btw.

Bungie has talented people. FFXIII was bad because of Toriyama and his mediocrity as a game developer.

TC is right and i strongly feel this. You can go by the name a lone, just by trying to pull another Halo. Halo, Destiny...both being something of devine importance or religious values. Their concept art seems sketchy at best in terms of design and just simple indecisive choices...it's like they're going back and forth with ideas. I always viewed bungie as one hit wonders, they stuck way to close to the original design of halo...they built quite the confidence (conquering the world talk, etc) Yet halo has no where near the sales or appeal as it once had thanks to COD, DUE to lack of inovation/risk taking...as in adopting modern ideas. Back to Destiny..nothing is eye catching/appealing in design IMO. As i said i strongly believe they don't have a clear vision, Destiny being a more desperational attempt in keeping relevant in the gaming world. Shall see..could end up being good.

No you are very much awake when you watch the Killzone trailer. @Erocia I don't think you understand what I'm trying to say. You don't need gameplay for the debut of a game, It's okay for a debut trailer to contain cgi as long as cgi is part of the actual game and provide you an impression of how the game is going to pan out. Destiny only showed slid shows of the game's concept art which is kinda lame. The least they can do is to show the MC of the game for us to relate to.

Well they got some things already working, they show player running with the gun. There possibility they got ready got gameplay concept but to keep things more elastic they don't want to talk about it. Once they say something publicly it can't be changed without consecunce, thats why develpers don't like to talk about things they working on.
