An man, I had a subscription to official playstation magazine for the demos.. Also got to choose a free game when I started the subscription, which was Darkstalkers..

Hmm, I do kind of miss the magazine days.. I mean, I know they are still about, the other day I was reading Edge for the first time in years.. But I can't see myself ever spending money on one these days.

I once bought a magazine that came with a VHS tape that showcased Sega CD games.. Also I think Games Master released a mag that came with a lollypop with a worm inside when Earth Worm Jim launched... Ah the 90's..

Kind of agree.

We live in an age where everything is so "up to date" in regards to information that getting a magazine now for news in the gaming world almost seems backwards.

Still, there is something tangible about holding something between your fingers. Also, anyone can just write whatever they want on the internet (like me, lol.) without having any facts or their claims having any kind of authenticity. The magazines, while not perfect, almost filtered out the unnecessary "news" we get now a days.

@videogameninja: yeah man true, but unfortunately when things are up to date then we are plagued with articles such as 'how to find the master sword' the day after Zelda launches on sites like this.. And it really pisses me off. Not that I read them, but the fact that they are there so early grinds my gears.

Really wish I had my old mags to browse now. I had a few official nintendo ones back during the Snes era too.

Alright people,

I know this topic won’t really “cater” to the younger crowd (y’know, the one that grew up on tablets, youtube, streaming services, and commercials before movies.) but I thought “Hey, what the hell.”

Did any of you out there subscribe to any of the old gaming magazines back in the day? If so which ones?

Going back into the Ol’ memory banks (who says that?) I vividly remember having an actual subscription to Electronic Gaming Monthly (or as they were commonly called EGM.) that I would receive right in my mailbox every month.

That’s right younger gamers, an actual physical book comprised of various articles of a thing called “paper” in an actual physical mailbox outside your house… not your email inbox (Wait'a patronize younger gamers, Ninja. You dolt!).

I actually looked forward to it every month as back then it was my only window into what was on the horizon in the video-gaming world. Bear in mind this was before the internet/during its infancy so the printed published magazines were your most up to date source for info.

I’m pretty sure EGM was the only mag I had an actual subscription for but I know I bought almost every other gaming mag my eyes came in contact with at the grocery store or other various “book-type” stores as well.

Off the top of my head I can recall getting almost every issue of…

PSM

Official Playstation magazine (C’mon, everyone bought the “officials” so that they could get the free demo discs. That’s right young gamers, that was our “demos.” You had to pay to get a magazine that had around 5 to 10 demos on a disc.)

Official Dreamcast magazine

Official Xbox magazine

Tips and Tricks (Had to get those cheat codes lol.)

Nintendo Power

GameFan (I lloooovveeedd gamefan.)

Gamers Republique (Incredible mag as well.)

Next Generation (a few of them here and there.)

Gamepro (Although I was starting to lose favor with them near the end.)

I’m sure there were some others but those were the ones I vividly remember the most.

So gamers, do any of you like me still have piles and piles of old gaming magazines stashed away somewhere in your houses?

-PILES OF PAPER NINJA APPROVED-

I've dumped most of mine. I used to get Nintendo Power, Gamepro, Gamers Republic, GameFan, OXM, PSM, ODM, NextGen (my favorite until they went under), Game Informer, EGM and a few others. I have the very first GameFan which I got from their Game Store in California before GameFan started. It was a 3X5 mini mag. They said the mini-issue was #1 and was a sample of what would be in GameFan. It's in storage somewhere. I do have the first 10 issues of GameFan & GamePro though. Met and spoke with the GF editors at E3 many years ago. Also met EGM's editors. Was in a Tekken Tournament with them at the E3 one year. Still have a lot of gaming mags, but will dump the rest soon. Have tons of Strategy Guides as well.

With such a phallic/suggestible image on that cover that magazine could have possibly served as another type of magazine ;)

Love it!

My friend has a stack of Game Informer by the shitter. Every time I took a dump at his house, I always took a while. It's the only place his wife would let him store the old copies. There's also a stack of women's mags for those who want it.

Amiga World, Nintendo Power, Diehard Gamefan, and Electronic Gaming Monthly. Somehow I was getting free copies of Game Informer. This was back before they had a graphic designer and the mag looked like 80's vomit.

EGM, PC Gamer, Computer Gaming World, Nintendo Power are the ones i think i had. Also had a few other ones but these were the most common ones i had. This is before the internet had many gaming sites so magazines were the only way to get info on gaming.

These were important magazines but are just so outdated now considering how much faster information can be released through videos and websites nowadays on the internet. Computer Gaming World has all their old issues scanned and archived which is really interesting to look at the old ones.

My mate subed to Cubed which was cool as they had mini dvd disks to watch trailers on. but... Was funny because the GC couldnt actually play them.

PC Gamer when I was kid, from like mid 90's to when I got out of high school in 2002.

Ahhhhh, the demo discs....the demo discs! Such a treasure they were in a pre-internet household!

It was a great publication. It still is, to some extent, but not like it was back in the day. I still remember their Half-Life review, reading it, being like "I must have this!"

Pretty sure the only one I ever subscribed to was EGM. In the early to mid 90s those issues were as thick as books lol. Loved those magazines back then, they were really the best of the bunch.

I had a lot of GamePro mags too, not sure if I ever subscribed though. Also used to pick up/borrow the occasional Nintendo Power.

I always kept an annual subscription to EGM and Nintendo Power. I believe my first subscription to Nintendo Power was in 1996. Started getting EGM aswell in 1998, I believe. I kept both of them renewed every year until 2005-ish. My uncle kept a subscription to Official Playstation magazine from like 96-2000. He would always give us the previous months demo disc whenever he got the new one. My older brother had a subscription to Official Dreamcast Magazine during dreamcast's run. I would buy Gamepro from stores quite often, but never subscribed. I recall buying a few Official Xbox magazines. I believe it was 2005 when I realized that for $15 you got a gamestop rewards card plus a year subscription to Game Informer. I was using gamestop so much at that time the rewards card was well worth the $15 and the magazine seemed like a bonus. Thats when I ended up not renewing EGM or Nintendo Power. I kept getting Game Informer until 2015. In 2015, I seemed to not ever really go to gamestop anymore. The last 3 years that I got Game Informer, I never really looked at the issues like I had used to. Some months, I would flip through the issue once, then alot of the times, they were never even opened. In recent years, I already knew about everything that was in the magazine thanks to IGN and Gamespot. I do have fond memories of gaming magazines from the past, but there is a reason that 99% of them are out of business.

I read GameInformer. I have only vague recollections of reading it because I was so young. I just remember they gave MGS2 a 10/10, and didn't give out too many of those (if any) before that.

It really is.

Younger gamers might not ever experience that feeling but for us "old as dirt" gamers something like that recaptures a moment in time that just can't be replicated today.

It often makes me wonder what this new generation of gamers will have in it's place, if anything at all.

I was into Nintendo Power for a while, I have issues 160-220 or something like that. Leading up to #200 they did a countdown of 200 best games on Nintendo platforms, that was pretty cool. They also did a 20 year anniversary issue where they listed the top 20 games on each Nintendo platform. Good stuff

Yes, I was subscribed to a german PlayStation magazin way back in the day. I had every issue including the very first one about this new game called Tomb Raider ^^ They renamed it several times and it has been many years since I unsubscribed, so I don't remember what all its names were and how it's called now ... or if it even still exists.

Before that I wasn't a subscriber to other magazines, but I did read other magazines. I just don't remember all their names.

I got a couple of free subscriptions to Nintendo power back in the N64 days. Loved that mag. Wish I would have kept up with it all these years.
