Did gamespots three 10s of gen 7 represent?

Gta4 - Mgs4 - Super Mario Galaxy 2... All 10/10 prime on the only site that matters to our metagame...

The question is, when you think across gen 7 in its entirety, did thesE games represent the pinnacle of gaming to you?

I wouldn't really put any of them as representative of gen 7, I don't feel any of them deserved 10s. Not sure what I would though, mind.

For single player games I don't think they were too far off...but the problem for me is they don't focus enough on MP games. There were some games where the MP could stand on it's own and I felt were worthy of 10s (Halo 3 comes to mind)

Mario galaxy 2 deserved that score imo coz for me it did something no other game did (ni no kuni came close) it was just pure undiluted fun.. the other 2 not so much..

I completely agree that MGS4 is 10/10 and respresents the best game of the generation.

GTAIV was a complete disgrace and utter turd. Something about made me bored sick. As I played it on consoles its horribly blurry styled graphics probably contributed to me feeling ill while playing it, and not just the fact that I expected GTA:SA greatness and was left with a bland, empty, boring world.

GTA V on the other hand is everything GTA IV should of been, GTA SA and all other GTAs could have hoped of being, and is truly one of the best games ever - this deserves a 10.

SMG2 is not worthy of a 10 as it is only a 10 by Wii standards. And I know graphics don't really matter much but how can a game get a 10 if its graphics look PS2 era in 2010? Graphics are a (small) part of the equation.

The third 10 I would give to The Last of Us. Truly a master piece.

GTA 4 was a complete mess. GTA 5 is as close to sandbox perfection as you can get however. That should be a 10.

I'd give SMG2 a 10. Xenoblade too. The World Ends With You and Ghost Trick are 10s in their respective genres too.

MGS4 maybe not a 10 (solid 9). But Demons Souls, Dark Souls, Arkham Asylum, The Last of Us and Uncharted 2 are all 10s imo.

I only have MGS4 and GTA4 and i think a 10 is what they deserved.

People tend to forget that a 10 doesn't mean a game is flawless. AT THE TIME of release it sets a new standard in the series/genre etc

GTA4 was easily the best Sandbox game released in 2008. I remember being blown away by it. I didn't like that there was little side stuff to do but GTA4 set the bar which GTA5 matched and then some.

MGS4 was easily the best looking game on the PS3/360 at the time of release. I am sure i was not the only one in awe and realised the power of the 7th gen through it. The story conclusion was satisfying but Act 3 was criminally short and lacking aaction.

People should read into what "10" really means

No... Mario Galaxy 2 does a really good job as a representative of a 10, but I would give MGSIV a 6.5 and GTAIV a 7.5 if I were using a numerical rating system. Gamespot has mentioned in the past that Dark Souls was underrated by them, and if that recieved a 10 then that would be a good representative.

Only real 10's in my opinion were Uncharted 2 and GTAV.

There were only two games that I thought deserved a prime score last gen and they were

-Batman Arkham City

-Donkey Kong Country Returns

Both are marvels of master game design beyond anything else I played last gen.

GTA IV was good for 2008, albeit much much less impressive for its time than III, VC, SA. Now in hindsight I can say it's a pig ugly borefest. **** it to hell and back. Ugh. The other 2 are in my good books.

I wouldn't say any game of gen 7 deserved a 10. Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Dark Souls were close though.

If I will remember gen 7 for 3 games, it will be SMG2, Mount&Blade: Warband and Dark Souls (which after a replay, I concluded that it is better than Demons Souls).

GTAIV - As everyone else says, a bland boring disappointment. Would be a 6 or 7 for me.

MGSIV - Too much time wasted in cutscenes. Great apart from that. 9 for me.

SMG2 - Amazingly fun but didn't have the same impact as the first. 9 for me. (10 for the original though)

MGS4 is one of the few games that actually deserves a 10. GTA4 is a solid 9 in my opinion.

I can't pass judgement on SMG2 since I never played it.

Not even close. SMG2 I never played. GTA4 and MGS4 are both on the lower half of the games I played. MGS4 in particluar is terrible in every way.

MGS4 was the worst game I played all gen, like legitimately 75% cutscene and 25% gameplay and that's not even exaggerating things. And some of the worse writing all gen to boot.

GTAIV was a great game, gets way too much abuse here, but not a 10. I think GS had a fair few swings and misses with some of its review scores but at the end of the day its an opinion and no 2 people are ever going to agree on how to score whole libraries of games.

Agreed, MGS4 was a fucking waste. What people seem to not realize is that Metal Gear Solid is a series that naturally appeals to stupid people, who seem to think that having long cut scenes equate to having a well written compelling story, when MGS is the definition of a convoluted messy plot.

Kojima is by far the most overrated developer on the planet, a third rate writer who only gets off on shock value and abusing plot twist worse than M. Night Shyamalan

Hazy, yeah sure it takes abuse... I'm usually the one dealing it. :P I feel validated too based on what GtaV brought to the table... Given R* addressed nearly every single gripe I had with mission design, controls, driving, shooting and side activities. GTAV was their de facto gta to me...

Ultimately you're right, it is always opinion, but I've been thinking about how this gen will be remembered and I thought it would be interesting to hear how people feel about the three games gamespot themselves etched in stone as flagship gen 7 titles.

Mgs5 deserves a 9. Great game with extremely long cutscenes.

Sign deserves a 10. It is the Pinnacle of 3d platforming games.

MGS IV - 9/10

Super Mario Galaxy 2 - Never played it.

For me, a game that deserves a 10 is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I'd rate that game a 10/10. Never have I felt so engrossed in a game before. Skyrim couldn't replicate the feeling that I had while playing Oblivion.

GTa V dissapointed me just as much as IV the horrible clunky controls made it an absolute chore to play. Had way more fun with vice city and SA..hell even china town wars was more fun to play than the overrated turd that is gta V.

Well, I honestly think that Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV were massive disappointments; Mario Galaxy 2 is immaculate game design, but I do think that the first one deserved a ten over the second one, simply because of the sheer impact that it had.

GTA IV deserved it, SMG2 deserved it, MGS4 did not.

Metal Gear Soilid 4 was a poor mans deus ex.

Mario Galaxy 2 was worth the 10 for sure.

With MGS4 and GTA IV, people were too blown away with the realistic graphics to realize that they were very good but weren't leagues above the games that were already out.

Was I the only person that found Super Mario Galaxy 2 had way more impact than the first? I thought the first was just OK and that they played it way too safe. The second just let loose with imagination. There were way more crazy new ideas in the second. It just blew my mind around every corner. Add in much better challenge, stronger level design, and a lot more content and SMG2 just soars way above its predecessor.

You have to take into consideration that the scores are given at it's time. No one in the right mind would give GTA 4 more than an 8 today. Metal Gear 4 is more of a thing if you're a fan of the series and been following it i guess... and mario Galaxy 2 seems like a pretty good game but saying it's a 10 over all the great games out there is far fetched. Deus ex to me deserves a lot more praise than Mario Galaxy, a game with no script or properly constructed story.

MGS4 was the only one for me, probably my fav game of the gen.

SMG just isn't for me anymore. Bored the shit out of me. GTA4 was pure shit. Boring as hell.

Lollipop Chainsaw represents the best of the gen.

I would say CoD4, Uncharted 2 and GTA V were the best games of the gen.. If Dark Souls didn't have the frame rate issues it'd be up there as well. Well I guess since Dark Souls 2 doesn't seem to have them it will probably be up there

MGS4 is a combat-cutscene-combat-cutscene game at it's primest example. Great movie. So-so game.

GTA IV had the "game" part right, but it had no variety in it's missions or depth in it's money system.
