I'm gonna start with Rocket League. Awesome little title that came out of nowhere, and has (justifiably so) received a lot of praise all over the place. The game is super addictive and presents a new concept on soccer. Old news.

They've added treasure boxes that you randomly earn. When you get one, they'll even ask if you want to leave the game and open it. Problem is, in order to do that you have to purchase keys. I think they sell them for like 5 for $5 or something. Inside they could contain anything from a new car design to decals, paint schemes, new tires and rims ect.

Now some of you are gonna say "they're just cosmetics" and that is true, but why are they advertised to the player as treasure boxes or given in the first place? Just another shitty way to nickel and dime players.

I hope they use all those coins to upgrade that shitty soundtrack, game sounds and the visuals of the game instead of pocketing all that cash.

Not gonna complain about something like this. If you wanna be an idiot and spend money to have a random chance at getting something go for it. If you're smart you just save up your drops and trade to get what you want.

Destiny. $5 dlc's sold for $20 and under "expansion". Actual $20 expansion (The Taken Wallet) sold for twice as much, $40.

I recall Deus Ex having an obtrusive number but as I didn't play it for long I don't recall why. I'm planning on revisiting the game but it just feels a bit of a let down in the style department.

I think it really sucks that most outfits in Street Fighter V you HAVE to spend money to get. And some of the Stages and Outfits are timed.

Yeah, SFV can be pretty jank lol. Unlocking all the characters via in game fight money is actually pretty reasonable. Between the SP content, weekly challenges, player and character level up bonuses, and the slow accumulation of FM from casual and ranked wins, it's not so bad.

But when you add in costumes and stages? Yeah it gets sheisty. Especially seeing as there's "premium" content that has to be purchased with real money. I don't care if the proceeds go to the Capcom Cup prize pool, charging ten bucks for the CPT stage was ridiculous lol.

I think the biggest issue though, is that the season pass isn't actually a season pass. At least they're calling it a character pass now, but still jank lol.

Season 2 Gief is sooooo good btw.

@LegatoSkyheart: I think it sucks that akuma who is released in 2016 is apart of season 2 on SF 5. I paid 12.50 for season pass (half price).

Yes it's crazy. I've brought the special costumes for Gief as I main him (though he is bottom tier character)

The Reason why Akuma is part of Season 2 is because Season 2 started in December.

@ConanTheStoner: the Capcom cup stuff was poor. A total rip off.

Yes it's better now but when I Brought season pass there wasn't none of that.

Yes Gief has improved a whole lot. I think the main change has been the delay input change as he doesn't feel so sluggish. But the double lariat adding a percentage to the CA has made me prolong fights.

Yeah, that's the issue. There are some damn fine games with microtransactions. Some implement them worse than others of course.

Like one of my favorite games last year, I spent over 250 hours playing it, and not once did I feel pressured by its microtransactions the whole time I played. It was a total non issue.

But then my favorite game this year, Street Fighter V, is littered with them. Immediately you feel the urge to buy in. But then again, I'm not going to avoid one of the best playing games in the genre and deny myself hundreds of hours of quality entertainment, just because Capcom is being greedy.

It's nice to have principles and "stick it to the man", but there's no reason to oversimplify the situation either. Would be nice if every game with microtransactions were inherently shit, and thus avoidable, but that's not even close to the reality of it.

Yes, that's why you let the idiots buy keys and unlock that stufff for you, then you trade them for the stuff you want that they unlocked.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/311730/ - Probably not the worst example there is to find. But what they did with this is beyond disgusting. At first you even had to pay up front for the game, and then go on and buy a bunch of DLC to get the content. Remember when you worked to get those things in the game by means of skill instead of buying tons of DLC for hundreds of dollars?

And while I'm at it: **** off, Capcom.

COD Modern Warfare Remastered, the lootboxes are already here, and they promised to keep the game like it is when it came out (besides those maps and MP44 that still had to be released). Now they find hidden files of new weapons (the game already has a shovel) new skins, bunch of loot boxes. Can't fovus on the game with the heavy colored camo's on players guns. Just a matter of time before I get hit in the face with boxing gloves.

God, Dead or Alive DLC is awful.

It's not because it's mostly Costumes, it's that for Steam you can only buy them in bulk. There's no option for buying individually (unlike PS4). And Even if you buy them Individually there's certain outfits that are exclusive only if you buy the Season Passes.

Really DOA5's dlc has gotten out of hand, it almost rivals Those Simulator Games.

Nothing in particular has rubbed me wrong, but overall I hate how digital marketplaces on consoles refuse to competitively price their games. I got a digital download code for Dead Rising 4 on Xbox One from GameStop today for $30 because the Countdown digital sale was like $10+ more. Even looking at releases like Star Wars Battlefront or The Division or Destiny releasing complete editions dirt cheap, the add-on by themselves aren't discounted and just as much (if not more) than the discounted all DLC having versions/bundles, which just pisses on the loyal fans that early adopted. Super lame bullshit, can't single any one publisher out on this since they all do it.

More annoying than any single DLC tactic employed by publishers, more so I just hate people bitching about it. Many games don't require it, you can earn everything, just you can pay for shortcuts... hey, if publishers can exploit those people, by all means, have at it. I don't need that shit, I'm not least bit worried by it.

Yeah, DOA5 is fucking abysmal lol. No excuse for that shit.

Fighting games in general are just tricky territory though, you're never going to have the final game on day one. Additional content, balancing, and system changes have always been a part of this genre. People like to wear rose tinted shades when it comes to this shit, but it's always been this way.

If you were a fan of Street Fighter 2 back in the day, then you bought the original, then Champions Edition, then Super Turbo, all as stand alone games. If you were into Mortal Kombat 3, you bought the original, then Ultimate, then Trilogy.

Either way though, any fighting game worth its salt has legs, and the content + system changes have to be paid for somewhere.

Personally I prefer how Street Fighter 4 handled it, as expansion packs. Every couple of years you get big balance and system changes as well as new characters, stages, and skins, for a reasonable upgrade fee. I think it was perfect. And yeah, they did sell costume packs on the side, but before you say "Oh you could unlock it in game back in the day!", no, no fighting game ever had nearly that many costumes for free. It was definitely reasonable. You got more than a good amount of content in the base game and this stuff was just a bonus if you wanted it.

If every FG handled things like SF4, I'd be happy.

The problem now is that they strip everything down to the individual item and by the time it all adds up you're paying far more than you would for the simple SF4 expansion. Or on the flip side, you have a game like Guilty Gear that pretends that we're still in the 90s. No ability to upgrade your existing game, you just have to purchase the new one.

The content has to be paid for, I have no objections to that. The greatest fighting games of all time are a result of years of improvement and additions to a base game. That stuff doesn't come free.

The issue now is that they've gone far beyond what is an acceptable balance, and are now just seeing how far they can bend gamers over.

Basically everything with a cash shop involving RNG unlocked loot is cancerous garbage. Especially bad when it can continue to give you crap you already have. Shit like that makes me wish for another video game crash.

And they did, but We can't access unless we pay for them because like everything else, someone clocked in time to made that content and they want compensation.

Plus a lot of those Outfits are 3rd Party Promotions, like Attack on Titan or King of Fighters. So It's not paying for the outfit, it's paying for the brand.

Dead or Alive: Xtreme 3. Game's a grindfest that pushes you towards spending money on Premium tickets.

Star Citizen's ship prices are also ridiculous, but I'm sure there's an excuse for that.

So exactly like Team Fortress 2 then. You get heaps of boxes you need to purchase keys for. It's pretty disgusting. At least you can get stuff you don't need keys for as well. I don't mind what Blizzard does with Overwatch. You get a lot of lootboxes for free, and IF YOU WANT, you can purchase more. Which I've never done and hope not many others do. But I know many does, otherwise we wouldn't have this shit business. Gamers are idiots, that's just the way it is.

The idea that cosmetic DLC is fine because it doesn't impact the gameplay makes no sense to me. I understand that weapons or other items with stats would be worse. But cosmetics are for me a very important part of any game. I like looking cool. I like being stylish. If you have the option to customize your appearance I derive a lot of fun from that. And if you sell cosmetics that pretty much automatically suggests that you can customize your appearance. In those games cosmetics are half my fun. Am I alone in that?

It would be much easier to accept extra levels or side stories as DLC than cosmetics. I'm not going to give developers a free pass just because their 'micro' transactions are only cosmetic. I still consider that a bad practice.

I guess when you break down my argument it does come down to pricing. Because I AM OK with say The Witcher 3 Blood and Wine and that has cosmetics in it as well and I like that it does. So I guess it comes down to how substantial the DLC is. Cosmetics can be part of it, but to sell them under the guise that 'it doesn't matter' is deceptive to me. If it wouldn't matter nobody would buy it either. It matters to me and for me it touches the core of the game.

The pricing on console is horrible period. Even when you try to by digital games the prices are way too high. Yet I can go to the store and buy the same game for much cheaper. I was talking to my friend and he told me he paid 15 bucks for oblivion on the x1.

Surprise no DLC lolz I for the GOTY oblivion at walmart for 9 bucks brand new.

Dead Or Alive launched on Steam looking like a psp game, without multiplayer. They proceeded to sell £1000 worth of bra and panties for the doll girls to men who own an abnormal amount of tissue paper.

This was probably the lowest point of humanity.

Nah, you don't have to buy that stuff. You can earn it in game for free.

Not gonna complain about something like this. If you wanna be an idiot and spend money to have a random chance at getting something go for it. If you're smart you just save up your drops and trade to get what you want.

It would have to be Forza 6 for me. Not because it had micro transactions, but because they marketed the game as micro transaction free, then forced them in later and claimed that sim players wanted it bad. Sure you could turn them off, but it feels like they sold people on something then switched it up afterwards.

@Ghost_Dub: So is basically the exact same as Valve has been doing for years with TF2, CSGO and Dota2. Nothing new.
