Review
A flop confirmed. No miracle recovery for WiiU. And no, it´s not a McShea's review XD

I'll still pick it up. I need something to play on my WiiU. And I've always enjoyed Donkey Kong.
Harsh though.
"+ Exciting and challenging boss battles"
"- Harsh checkpoints during boss battles"
Make your mind up - Is challenge a good thing, or not?
I'm gonna complain about this review even though I haven't played it myself!
I know you will if Bayonetta 2 flops.
Next lowest score for the game is an 8.0. The rest are above 9. Is Gamespot trying to make a point here? Are they trying to fix a review system with inflated numbers? Whatever they think they are doing I would be careful. This industry can be very harsh.

Nah. I'll be too busy taking a baseball bat to the reviewer's knees.

Worse than the fanboys here.
It is extremely disappointing though if what the review states is true. The game was delayed twice, and this is still the result. I'm still getting the game and will probably enjoy it, but I was hoping for something great. It could still end up being great for me, but my hopes have dampened a bit.

Oh, come on. Who said you had to play it to note such contradicting lines like this?

Yes. Because a boss being challenging always has something to do with the placement of checkpoints. Not to mention the entire review isn't based on that negative point.
Hell, it's pretty sketchy the way he puts it, but I can understand where he's coming from.
"When you die in one of the latter stages of the boss, it sends you back to the start"
Isn't that the case in most games though ? I'm pretty sure it's the case in every single DKC game...
It was surely the case with DKC1 and hell, it was even in DKCR. Has Walton even played a Donkey Kong game in his life?
It sucks that this flopped so hard on GameSpot. Unoriginality and a hard difficulty brought the score down somewhat.
For those who are/were considering this game, the meta score is currently 82, with GameSpots review being the lowest one at 60.
Of course, there are comments defending this as "it's just his opinion", nevermind that opinions can have flaws in their argument, which is the case for several reviews (this one included).
This is the same guy that gave pupeteer a 9,0 btw.
So I can't trust his opinion in the slightest... Puppeteer had great presentation, but the gameplay and level design was pretty darn bad. You know, the aspects of a platformer that matter most and the very aspects that Retro 100% nailed with their last Donkey Kong in addition to the presentation.
Platformers are my favourite genre and in the end I'll get this game because it's the sequel to one of the best games I've ever played full stop. I'll form my opinion from there.
P.S. I love how all the reviewers are commenting on how hard this game is. That's one of the major things that made the first so satisfying. It was tough, but fair and when you accomplished something it meant a lot. I will never forget 200%ing DKCR. That memory will stick with me for a long time.

arrow to the knee is super effective.. just so you know

It's also totally in spirit with the DKC series. The last levels of the original DKC games were hard as well, especially the hidden levels.
The hidden world in DKC 2 is one of the hardest I've ever played in a platformer.

Yeah I remember those too. I never did beat those back in the day. I remember the one where you had to bounce off rolling tires or that level which had you transform into every one of the animal buddies. More games need to bring the challenge these days. Too many games lack that sense of accomplishment.

Can't keep reviewing games after an arrow to the knee...
6/10? Hype surpassed! After all that news, we all agreed to change the hype to 5/10 right? So no floppage here. :P
Of course I kid; majority hyped 8/10 so a flop is here. Read the review and... it was alright. I don't really know what to say otherwise as I actually didn't think DKCR was all that special; I hope those that desire this game really enjoy it though. More great games means more great games.

Yup, in that level there were spikes that instakill you everywhere. I spent hours trying to beat that level :P
I don't care if a game is hard, as long as it's fair. DKC games have always been fair. And it would be strange if this game is somehow different, like the reviewer says.

You'd be amazed at what some reviewers consider fair. Here's an example from Kotaku (at 27:00):
"I have not been taught this!"
This is the same guy that gave pupeteer a 9,0 btw.
Yeah...does anymore really need to be said?
It's getting very high marks elsewhere...a lot of 9's and even some 10's... remember this is just ONE guys opinion guys.... your top 5 favourite games of all time will have SOMEONE that hates any of them for whatever reason i guarantee it.
I think Titanfalls complete trash i bet it will get get praised to the heavens on GS though.
So it wasn't just Tom who was unimpressed.
A bit of fun, but uninspired. Seemed like a reasonable review.
Which is very odd; when viewing previews and reveals Tropical Freeze looked a lot more inspired than Donkey Kong Country Returns, which had to recall a lot of the past to let you know, "Hey, we're this game! Remember? It's so great to be back!"
I'd love to hear what gamers on System Wars have to say about the game; a couple other game sites say it's more imaginative than its predecessor.
Wow, that was a terrible review, he just played the game unaware of what the Donkey Kong Country franchise, nay, platforming concepts were in general, AND IT SAYS IN HIS BIO THAT HE TRIED TO PLATINUM RAYMAN LEGENDS!
Still picking it up, if there is one franchise that has not failed to make a bad game (not counting Barrel Blast because the development of that game was skewed since Donkey Kong Racing's concept in 2002), it's Donkey Kong.
Once again, GameSpot is the lowest score giver for a game. I'm getting tired of this going against the grain stuff. Good thing I go by the GameRankings/MetaCritic average. I am sure I will love this game like I did Donkey Kong Country Returns.
