Poll Do Crytek deserve to die (99 votes)

Yes 37%
No 63%

Crytek went from creating graphical powerhouses that pushed graphics (Farcry/Crysis) with open ended sandbox game-play encouraging players to be creative. But then, with Crysis 2, betrayed pc gamers. Removing the large environments for tight Call of Duty corridors. Removing lean, prone and multiple powers to "streamline" it because it "made sense". i.e. because of consoles

Then, a step further, Rinse An Xbox One Exclusive and a "movie" game. With barely any game play and micro-transactions. A huge critical and commercial flop with a canned sequel.

For me personally, at this very moment, as I type this, in a room, with keyboard, my attitude is "**** em".

How about you, the fellows? Do Crytek deserve to die with a whimper?

I think that this thread stepped over the line. It's not cool to wish someone crashing and burning even if in this case some criticisms might be valid.

No. They made poor decisions, they were unlucky, that doesn't make them deserve anything lol.

When jobs and families are at stake, no one should have to go through this. They did their best and achieved a level at success at one point that many other studios only dream of hitting. They deserve all this to be turned around.

No they don't deserve to die. If you don't like their games, just don't buy them. Let other people enjoy them, instead of them perishing altogether.

I've never been a Crytek fan. They sure made some fun eye candy I used to demo my PCs at one time, but I never loved their games. I don't wish ill will on anyone, but I wouldn't sob if they disappeared either.

I don't really pay much attention to their games, but one less studio developing is one less studio developing. I've enjoyed Crysis and it would such to see all that talent disperse.

Too much white knighting on places like this and hiding behind the "people will lose their jobs" excuse. we get it, you want a medal.

Business is business. Crytek ... made a good engine... and 1 good game. then they sold out, watered down their games to try and get the CoD pie... lost more money on those projects than the previous PC exclusive they made... had lower ratings and made shallow games. then made... whatever the hell RYSE was suppose to be... a product that scored lower than many many games by alot worse developers.

Is Cervat to blame? maybe... sounds like he had quite the ego and assumed because he made pretty games he deserved the sales success of CoD.... when in reality he made empty sandbox shooters that were loved 99% of the time for their graphics... well at least Crysis 1 had good gunplay... after that... console gunplay s*it.

If it was any other service... and it was poor... you would be bloody abandoning it. that is what you are meant to do when a mediocre service/product is introduced to you.

oh sure. the staff are not to blame maybe. but then... they are in the damn computer science/3d art industry most of them.... if not all have a damn good CV and won't likely have HUGE trouble at least finding work. its not like theres a shortage of programmers? AMIRITE!

No developer or publisher deserves to die.

But when Crytek got greedy after Crysis Warhead, and they end up making less money than they did before, I can't feel sorry for them either.

people keep going on about nobody deserving to die, it's a moot point anyway because everyone will die. and besides, its really about crytek going out of biznez.

i think its a shame their middleware's not more widely adopted, but you're right about their weak releases, eg i'd say everything but crysis and far cry.

plus they have 9 studios, i was reading they employ some ~796 people. you've gotta have excellent management for that. the internet is abundant with rumours of insolvency.

ryse was a shocker. i can't believe they're experiencing money problems after that. they shouldn't have made a launch exclusive unless the console manufacturer foots the lion's share. sure if the thing goes mental the contract should allow for that, but you know what i mean? why make ryse only for xbox one if it's important for crytek to shift copies? why? that's not why you do that. you do that because its important for MS (the console manufacturer) to shift xbox ones attempt to show off the xbox ones graphics. i'd charge 'em large for that.

check out this quote from here:

In short, Crytek is currently in deep trouble and we don’t know whether the studio will be able to recover. And yes, PC gamers can now say to Crytek “We told you so, you had to keep Crysis exclusive to the PC and keep pushing the graphical boundaries.”

impossible to prove but it does make you wonder.

No, though I won't shed a tear if they go under. Crytek put itself in the position it is right now. It's their fault.

If Crytek knows how to do one thing right, it's graphics. They make great development tools and that is the only thing I'll miss about them if they're gone.

Didn't realize that Crytek was this disliked. I personally enjoyed all of their Crysis titles although the first was the best IMO. It is funny how people criticize them for consolizing their titles, but that is probably what has kept them in business for this long. If you were a fan of Crytek prior wouldn't you want them to release their titles on multiple platforms in order for them to make more money?

yeah, they have all these studios.

But they haven't made a great game after Crysis: Warhead. They had a hattrick, and after that they turned into another mediocre developer.

And Crytek should ask themselves what the point is of having all these studios when you're main studio has to step in because Ryse: Kinect was bad beyond repair? Frankfurt still tried to fix it... but it was already too late. So they threw some fancy graphics on there and called it a day.

fun fact. hey made more money off Crysis 1 + Warhead being PC exclusive. than Crysis 2/3 being multiplat.

They aren't making good games anymore. If they keep on not making good games, I'd rather see them die so the people working there can find new things to do, hopefully something good. I'm also annoyed they aren't doing anything with TimeSplitters, and would love if someone who cares about it would take over the series.

No they do not deserve to go out of buisness. I am not a fan of thier latest games, but let us be honest, Crysis 2 and 3 while nowhere near as fun or good gameplaywise as Crysis 1 and Warhead, they were still "Good" if Ryse breaks thier back then it is a real shame.

They made one bad call, and seems to have too many people on too many Projects. But they are not alone in that. I will always take more Devs and Publishers then less.

Ofcourse Not !

I get it, you were betrayed blah blah blah... But that doesn't mean they should die... Why should the people who like Crysis 2 and Ryse suffer just because were dumb enough to treat a studio like its untouchable. This is what happens when you over value things and you deserve it.... Grow Up or Shut Up ! ! ! Oooooh I just had a fantastic Idea for a T-Shirt :)

I wouldn't call what they did consolizing. Because that is a term that tells us absolutely nothing.

Crysis 1 had something unique going for it. It was still a lineair game but you had these huge open levels and suit powers that gave you freedom on how to approach situations. I've finished the game 4 times and during the last time I played it I was still discovering parts of the levels I hadn't seen before or tackled objectives in a way I hadn't done before.

People and critics loved Crysis 1... and what did Crytek do ? They said "**** it, let's make Crytek 2 more like other shooters"

Is that because of consoles ? I doubt it, Crysis 3 had bigger levels again, so it was definitely possible on consoles to have more open levels. I also fail to see why they removed suit powers for consoles.

I think it's just down to incompetence, or failing to repeat what made you first game good.

This. With the release of Crysis 2, it was painfully obvious where Crytek was going. They lost the charm of the original Crysis, they removed the massive map, the suit modes, the multiple ways to approach a situation. Now, some of this is down to limiting the game for consoles. Crysis 2 pales in comparison to the original Crysis, a game that was built for PC's in mind rather than a game that was built with the console COD audience in mind. You can see the way they went with Crysis 2, the linear level progression, the simple weapon system, the simple suit mechanics. All hamstrung by the 7th gen machines that were already way past their expiry dates. Pretty graphics does not cover up the forced console mechanics.

Now, for Crytek themselves, they really did **** things up. The holy'er than thou attuide is just pouring from the studio mixed together with the "We want some of the COD pie" stench. Their feeble attempts to show some love to their original fanbase, their blatant disregard for their fans as they chased the coats of the COD war machine and the hopes of truck fulls of cash it generates. I've not even begun to talk about Crytek buying the TimesSpiltters name, a name that means a lot of many gamers out there and then refusing to do anything with it. Instead we get lumped with Ryse, an X1 exclusive that did little of note and cost the company greatly.

I firmly believe that Ryse was the final straw that broke camel Crytek's back. Mismanagement, poor treatment of staff and fans alike and release mediocre games will only last so long.

No, but they deserve a swift kick in the backside. Crytek expanded too quickly and had unrealistic goals of competing with call of duty across numerous platforms.

Yes, it's not worthy of my time, and most people's time (if they're going bankrupt). But that still doesn't mean they deserve to die. Something deserves "death" (in the sense of ending a business, not human life) if it has been immoral, nothing more. If they have failed as a business just because of design choices that don't appeal to the mass market (ie the majority, ie "democracy"), then they have failed as a business. It still doesn't mean they deserve to die. I'm sure they have a set of fans who really enjoyed their stuff. Even if they had ZERO fans, they still don't deserve to die, as long as they have the desire to make games, they deserve to make games and continue. Whether or not they fail as a business is another matter.

Deserving death is a strong statement, you need to be careful with how you use it.

This sort of self entitled behavior runs rampant un this industry, gamers act as if the world owes them.

Exactly. I mean, if the developer went out of their way to destroy franchises, then as fans, we might have ground to stand on to say they should go out of business. But Crytek are just some developers who want to make games and/or money. Just because we don't like their games doesn't mean they should go out of business.

Again, whether or not that they actually do go out of business if another matter. Whether they deserve it though, unless they've done something immoral, then no, they can do whatever they want. They don't owe us anything.

No, they deserve to be given a chance on the Playstation platform, and if nobody is willing to fund the project, then maybe I will.

For making games that nobody wants while refusing to do something with the TimeSplitters franchise which people are begging them for, yes they deserve to go out of business. Hopefully a quality developer will pickup the rights to TimeSplitters and we will finally get TimeSplitters 4.

Why "LMAO"? Unlike Sony, MS could buy pretty much any studio they wanted. As a matter of fact, they could probably buy a lot of companies if they wanted to.
