Poll Do Crytek deserve to die (99 votes)

Yes 37%
No 63%

Crytek went from creating graphical powerhouses that pushed graphics (Farcry/Crysis) with open ended sandbox game-play encouraging players to be creative. But then, with Crysis 2, betrayed pc gamers. Removing the large environments for tight Call of Duty corridors. Removing lean, prone and multiple powers to "streamline" it because it "made sense". i.e. because of consoles

Then, a step further, Rinse An Xbox One Exclusive and a "movie" game. With barely any game play and micro-transactions. A huge critical and commercial flop with a canned sequel.

For me personally, at this very moment, as I type this, in a room, with keyboard, my attitude is "**** em".

How about you, the fellows? Do Crytek deserve to die with a whimper?

Yeah! I want less devs, less consoles, less differences and I'm right because I don't make games but I play them.

MS wil buy the Ryse IP (because muh God of War killer) and Sony will buy the Timesplitters IP.

Why "LMAO"? Unlike Sony, MS could buy pretty much any studio they wanted. As a matter of fact, they could probably buy a lot of companies if they wanted to.

They sure could! That's why MS' E3 conference was devoid of all those third party megatons lemmings kept expecting to show up.

Spoiler alert: they don't have the deep pockets you think they do. The Gears of War IP alone cost $100 million.

I've never been able to play their games because I could never afford a PC that could run them! That being said, I wouldn't wish bad JuJu on anyone...that's just not right.

What makes you think that Sony would buy the TimeSpiltters IP? If anything, EA or Ubisoft would grab it.

MS last 10-k: almost $5.6 billion - billion - in profit. That's not gross, that's net. You could have just a quick google search before posting such falsehoods. Just saying...

No ... No one deserves to die . Lot of people will be lose their job . We'll also won't be seeing new CryEngine and latest CryEngine right now , is one of the most optimized engines out there . I just want Crytek to go back to their roots . They made lot of their core fans angry in the past , but Crytek going bankrupt isn't good for anyone .

Sure why not? Many people on SW here would like to kill of MS so why not Crytek?

Serious now, I think they deserve it, they did not realy have any mercy on us, they did not even listen to the fans, at least put a new boss there. If they kick out employees then I think they should go they way like irrational games did, put your employees on your website and ask if other companies are interested in their employee. It would be a start.

Maybe just fire the people in charge of the gameplay.

Either that or teach them how to properly make a game. They have way too many employee's as is. I know it sounds heartless but downsizing is definitely needed.

What else have they done besides Far Cry 1 and Crysis? Maybe it has nothing to do with "consoles", and they just didn't have what it takes to follow up their 1 or 2 hits... this seems to happen to alot of artists, not just in video games but other forms (movies, music, etc). It's pretty common to have 1 or 2 hits, followed up with years of mediocrity.

That really doesn't matter. Both Sony and MS easily could acquire Crytek 100 times over if they wanted to. The only difference is MIcrosoft could probably do it 10,000 times over.

The reality is, neither company is likely to want to chase loser companies unless it is a bargain (i.e. at a firesale price). I admit I was surprised that Sony or MS weren't even active at picking up Atlus or some of the THQ assets when those companies went through their bankruptcy situations. That just goes to show how little value is placed on some of these intellectual properties, these multi-billiion $ corporations could have picked some established IP's for practically nothing (in terms of their overall balance sheet) and STILL didn't bother (ironically Crytek did acquire some firesale THQ properties, and now they themselves might be in trouble).

Some of you PC guys are sad. Master race? Well if being part of the master race means that you are so shallow that you hope people and their families suffer simply because they stopped making games for your PC, then I'm damn glad I'm not a part of it.

My chumdump, "wanting" and "judging" are two different things entirely.

If a man gets drunk while driving a sports car, crashing into a tree and dies. The humble commenter saying "well, he acted dumb, he deserved it" is this a morally wrong and reprehensible comment to make?

No, it's objectively looking at a situation and deeming the repercussions with a judgement due to a logical outcome of incompetency. And in the long run, this criticism and repercussion put into action, deters future accidents. In many ways, this poll is helping humanity.

Have none of you considered that most of the employees would be better off working for other companies if they are getting paid late etc? Their dying at this point would be like putting a wounded animal out of its misery. Crysis 3 was awful and it sounds like Ryse was even worse. I'm sure if they go belly up the talented people who work on the game engine will get snapped up and those responsible for fucking up recent games should move on to a new line of work.

Umm... that not really how it works. If the Xbox division decides that it is a smart business move to buy Crytek, they make the proposal to the board and they vote on it. They are all the same company

I think they have the talent to create some of the best games in the industry, and already probably have the best engine in the industry.

But talent means nothing when your management sucks and are more focused on making money than great games.

I feel there is nothing more fedora-tipping than crying that a developer 'betrayed' you because they decided to make a different kind of game after releasing one you personally enjoyed.

Crytek didn't 'betray' shit. They spent a huge amount of money to release one of the most technically advanced games of all time and it sold 80,000 copies in its first two weeks. Then they have the joyful news to read that it's moved a million units on bittorrent and is the most pirated game of the year. "But they should be grateful people are playing their game!" right?

Then they look over at consoles and see Halo and Call of Duty breaking the $1 Billion revenue mark in their first week on sale and you seriously think they are the ones who betrayed you? At least they were straight about it, he said right from the start that sales were disappointing, that the game would have sold a lot more on consoles and then Crysis 2 was obviously designed for consoles going forward, and surprise surprise, it sold much better than the original and sold like complete shit on PC.

Well I suppose they will have to downsize and get something back from Warface microtransactions and bet their money on the upcoming Homefront. Also figure something out to make Cryengine more appealing to devs.

Crytek haven't delivered where it matters, which is games. They have used they're time developing a very good multiplatform game engine that no other developer have used. If it's the marketing, or the price that has failed, I'm not really sure. They have had some of the best sponsoring through the years, the sponsors are probably tired of not seeing money in return. It would have been cool to see the CryEngine in different games than rubbish games made just to advertise the engine.

I disagree. They left their roots and are only contributing to developers leaving PC for consoles. They did that, and look where it got them. I wish no ill will on the people themselves though, but people saying Crytek doesn't need to shut down are only saying they need to continue to make mediocre games.

Survival of the fittest.

They didn't know how to build on their strengths. Compromised their own game to go for an audience that didn't compliment their skill set, and deep down, they were always kind of overrated to begin with. Because as progressive as Far Cry and Crysis were, both of those games have shitty 2nd halves, because the plot twist enemies in both games (The Trigun and the aliens) are FUCKING terrible.

Do those people deserve to lose their jobs? Not necessarily, I don't wish that on anyone. But they couldn't compete at their current state, so they are going bankrupt. The bed's made. Time to take the nap.

It doesn't mean they deserve to. It's just how markets work.

It really sounds like you're wishing people to get laid off.

I may even agree that some higher-ups may "deserve" that for their bad decisions, risking the whole company out of greed (or just incompetence). Though that may only apply to company owners or shareholders though... it depends on how the company works. But middle and low rank personnel, who make no decisions and only work their asses off can't really deserve any punishment for just doing what they're told to, as they're told to...

They don't appear to be going bankrupt to me, everybody is getting their panties in a twist in an incoherent mass hysteria. Let's tackle this one issue at a time.

  • Ryse sequel - cancelled because MS didn't want to allow for multiplatform development on PC and PS4; that's simple as that.
  • CryEngine failing to market for other studios to use in their games - this has been an issue for years, it's hardly new
  • Crytek Uk laying off 30 staff members - we see this a lot, either cleaning house, getting rid of unneeded game testers is my guess, anyhow, if there were a substantial change to Crytek coming my guess is that it would be the closing of Crytek UK, formerly Free Radical Design, the lack of talent hacks that brought us that "Halo Killer" Haze, and never got Battlefronts III out of alpha stage because they used all their time and resources trying to get Haze working (and even after all of that, it was still a spectacular dud)... if anybody is going, it's them. Though, I'm sure Crytek is giving the studio one last chance with next Homefront game. After that, if it fails, I think without question Crytek will can the studio.

I'm not inclined to believe Crytek is in any immediate danger, though this is maybe a years down the road kind of issue. if they were financially stressed I imagine we'd see them cancelling projects left and right and closing studios down. And Crytek UK is still up, once that's gone though it would give me cause for concern.

While I do agree with you generally, I should probably correct your third point about game testers being laid off. According to the source who reported this (Eurogamer I think), they said it was "key positions in art, design and programming", not just game testers, which can be a little more worrying.

Thanks for the music OP. I think every SW thread could benefit from having its own theme.

Would be so funny if they did. Herms would have nothing to look forward to that would beat PS4,even though crysis 3 was pretty consolized too.

I wouldn't say they deserve it, but they're definitely heading that way.

They've completely lost touch with what made them great.

No but they need to start making good games again. and only thing can save them is. if they create new engine and make game exclusively for PC like Far cry/Crysis.
