I know a lot of Nintendo fans see the Wii winning this gen due to the excellent sales it's already received, and it's a fair prediction, just like either PS3/360 winning this gen. I also know a lot of Sony/MS fans expect the Wii to win but I'm asking you right now:

Do we really want the Wii to win?

Think about the consequences for a second. If Wii wins both Sony and MS next gen will not upgrade their hardware significantly next gen and add something innovative like a touch pen, or Wiimote to their console to increase creativity among devs. Many seem to forget that devs can be creative or innovative with normal controllers/hardware too, like Okami for PS2, or Shadow of the Colossus. If Wii wins, next gen will be targeted mainly at non gamers who enjoy games like Wiisports, Nintendogs, Brain Training, Singstar etc.

I'm not saying "Don't buy a Wii" because I think it's a great console and I would like to see it fair much better than the GC but I certainly don't want it to win because it's quite obvious what effect that will have on the market. I just wanted to point that out. In any case I don't see it winning because I don't think it will be able to compete when GT5, Halo 3, GTAIV, FFXIII, MGSIV all arrive and take the media's attention.

What do you think? If Wii wins, would you be OK with MS/Sony not upgrading their hardware too much and focusing more on creativity or would you rather they take strong hardware + great graphics = good games route?

I'd rather the Wii win than to have to the PS3 win, and the PS4 end up being $999 US Dollars. :P

Seriously though, you could look at it another way and say that if the Wii loses, then there won't be any sigificant innovations made, at least within the next gen or so, because if Nintendo couldn't pull it off, what would make MS or Sony think they could? Egos aside of course. If the Wii wins, don't you believe that that would lead to all systems having a little bit of everything?

What is winning ? I thought the gamers win if they like their system of choice. I could care less who get  the marketshare. If I had stock in any of the companies then obviously I would care. Just enjoy your system. I didn't care about sales last gen when I had the dreamcast, xbox, and gamecube, nor did I care about the gen before that when I had a saturn and a N64. This gen is no different. If the system have the games I want and have plenty of new ips I am a customer.

Wii winning is NOT surprising, but if you're talking about which manufacturer responsible for console parts would win, I can only see IBM, no one else :p. gnutux

I don't see Nintendo winning intrinsicall. I see the videogame market slintering with Nintendo dominating the casual market with more non-traditional games like Brain Age and Nintendogs and Microsoft catering to the more traditional hardcore audience.

Yes, A little bit of everything but still focusing for titles for non gamers, like the Wii. I mean, the Wii isn't solely focused on non gamers obviously (SMG, SSBB, MP3).

Btw, great point about Sony winning. I forgot to adress that in my OP so I'll just do it now.

I'm really glad to see the PS3 failing at $600. It sends a very clear message to Sony that expensive products don't work in the market. However, I do see the PS3 price dropping next year and it will be more justified since the PS3 will have many more standout games out but I'm still glad to see it's not outselling 360/Wii right now.

I don't agree that "significant innovations" can't be made if the Wii doesn't win. I expect PS3/360 to have many creative titles in the coming years, just like the PS2/Xbox.

I do like my party games and strange/abstract third party games. /sarcasm I really know the Wii will win, but I don't WANT it to win. Simply because it may make other companies tailor more to the casual consumer, and we will see less and less incredibly indepth games.

I don't agree. If Wii does win it sends a clear message to Sony/MS that less hardware upgrades and more "creative ways to play games" is needed.

Companies do what consumers want. It's not the other way around.

How about both? The only why why you're saying could happen would be if Wii took 60% of the market and beat both PS3 and 360 combined...

In terms of "significant innovations", just to be clear, I didn't mean just the games, but the way they're played also, like the Wiimote or advances that MS and Sony can make with their controllers.

It won't be the end of the world if the Wii "wins".  The market moves around.  One day Nintendo will inevitably mess up and devs will go to another console.  It's a cycle.

Yes, that was my point.

Wii isn't guaranteed to win though. MS/Sony still have plenty of titles coming late 2007/early-mid 2008 that will create such a media frenzy...

Honestly, it's in no-one's interest to destroy a segment of a market.  Developers will still make games to cater to whatever taste a person has.  If one market is saturated, people will move their attention to other segments of the market.  If the Wii wins, developers will still make games for every demographic they can.  It's in their interest to do so because that makes them money.

Competition has increased significantly in practically everything worldwide from the TV market (Plasma, LCD), to oil prices, to the MP3 market etc.

Companies mess up now and they're out. There is no 2nd chance anymore, so it's rare to see any company mess up despite many taking big risks, eg Apple with the Iphone, Sony with the PS3 etc.

Comon dude.  It's not like competition won't exist.  Nobody is forcing anyone to buy a Wii.  There will always be competition.  The only time there wasn't was during the NES era and that was because the industry had crashed and there was a vacuum...which was quickly filled by Sega then Sony.

i dont think it works quite the way you're implying. yes, it is the "consumer" who decides what companies do next, but why do consumers want what they want? the answer lies in advertising and what the companies have impressed upon you. i think what you are calling a "risk" apple or sony might only call "a matter of time".

Exactly my point! In order to become a viable competitor other companies will begin churning out these hum drum party games and mini games and the market will become saturated with them. YAY SLIPPERY SLOPE ARGUEMENT FOR VIDEO GAMES!

So did the Game Boy trouncing the Game Gear mean that from then on handhelds decided to never upgrade their hardware to include color? Wii winning is better than it bombing; then next-gen would be incredibly stale and insanely expensive.

but it does still hold that an expensive and high tech handheld does not do as well, saleswise. doesn't mean people won't try, but its still not proven to be a good idea.

I never once said hardcore games would disappear.

But let's take an example....the DQ series. Look at how SE have moved the series to DS to cash in on the success of the non gamers/hardcore gamers handheld.

They did it for the cash. They moved their hardcore series to a handheld for the cash despite the fact that it could be a much better game if it were on the PS3/360.

FFXIII looks great with its graphics. I would rather see the game on the PS3 than on the Wii (not because I think it would be bad with Wii graphics + wiimote, but because hardcore games like that should advance in graphics and keep the same consistent gameplay).

I mean seriously, what would you rather play? RE5 or RE Wii?

(Don't take that as Wii bashing, just trying to make my point clear at what would happen if the Wii wins).

What, don't be such a graphics hore noob!!!! I'm glad the wii will win that way my mom and dad can join me in gaming, your just a noob who likes pretty graphics

In all seriousness, the wii would have been great if there were actually good uses for the wiimote. Nothing out right now shows that its nothing more than an overglorifed controller, but hey it really pushes those mingames to their boundaries. If the wii wins, and gaming becomes composed of little minigames and shallow subpar games, while the new hardware has yet to exceed the old hardware, then i'll probably stop gaming, at least on consoles.

If the Wii wins, it will be because it caters to a market segment that doesn't care at all about graphics and cares more about simplicity, something that the PS3 and Xbox 360 will have trouble catering to. Casuals and non-gamers love the Wii.

The 360 and PS3 will still have the hardcore gaming enthusiasts to target. This segment will probably make the Wii their second console.

It really makes me laugh that all these people who say that if the Wii wins it will spell disaster for the industry. Like we're really going to take steps back in graphics development. The hardcore gaming enthusiast market will always be there no matter what.

If anything, the Wii will help to expand the gaming industry. Its simplicity, innovation and cheap price will attract new gamers, gamers who could buy a PS3/Xbox 360 or some other future console.

You really should not make this kind of Thread about what people want to win the Wii, 360, or PS3. Right Now the wii will do fine from now through December 2008 because of Online title games that the x360 and the ps3 don't get and the ps3 will not sell well til the price drops. in 2009. that is when I see the ps3 taking over because the price will be down and better games are coming GTA4 will not help the ps3 sale because of the price the ps3 has but GTA4 will help the x360 alittle.

I'll take innovation over "bigger is better" any day, so yeah, i want the Wii to win and the PS3 to fail miserably
svetzenlether

Who says innovation can't happen of a "bigger and better" product?

GTA3, RE4, both revolutionary games, both on "bigger and better" consoles.

Okami, SOTC, also innovative games.

[QUOTE="OceanLeet"][QUOTE="Vandalvideo"][QUOTE="OceanLeet"]It won't be the end of the world if the Wii "wins". The market moves around. One day Nintendo will inevitably mess up and devs will go to another console. It's a cycle.Vandalvideo
In the mean time we can play such amazing titles as Mario Party 10 and Go GO Dance Party and "Generic Mini Game Game".

Comon dude.  It's not like competition won't exist.  Nobody is forcing anyone to buy a Wii.  There will always be competition.  The only time there wasn't was during the NES era and that was because the industry had crashed and there was a vacuum...which was quickly filled by Sega then Sony.

Exactly my point! In order to become a viable competitor other companies will begin churning out these hum drum party games and mini games and the market will become saturated with them. YAY SLIPPERY SLOPE ARGUEMENT FOR VIDEO GAMES!

Well it sure beats all the million GTA clones and FPS's out there...the market today is incrediably boring. Maybe the Wii will help breathe some new air in the stale market.

If the Wii wins by a fair share, Nintendo will no doubt make a high def next gen console that supports the Wii controller, or something better, dunno yet but its a long way off. I think for gaming having the Wii win would force Sony and M$ to make better attempts at innovating gaming instead of rehashing the same ideas that have been going on pretty much since the release of the very first console which is just improving graphics. By the end of this gen though we will see a point where graphics will be at a standstill in terms of improvment and they wont get much better, this really could be a road block for Sony and Microsoft for the next generation of consoles if they choose to stick to their current methods.

I think people are forgetting that the Gamecube failed and Nintendo didn't want to make same mistake again so they made a cheap console but if the Wii is succesful their next console will probably have a hardware jump making it equal to PS4 and Xbox 3 because Nintendo can afford that...

It's not up for some people on an internet forum to decide it is with people who just go and buy the product they like and if that happens to be the Wii then why cry about it? Nintendo is EXPANDING the market not replacing it with casual games just incorporating them so everyone can play. Jeez you act like the hardcore market will simply disappear well that kind of ignorance is probably just a sign of the anger coming from lemmings and cows.

I totally agree with your post. I liked the way video games were progessing before the Wii, and I don't want the whole industry moving in Nintendo's direction. More processing power can open up a lot more possibilities than any new input device.RKFS

How about processing power AND any new input device?

I don't know? Why not? Maybe you should ask Nintendo why they totally skipped on R&D.

The fact is, the Wii is selling great, at a fairly high price, with crappy hardware. If it ends up winning the console war, why would any of the big 3 waste their time with R&D next-gen? If it's proven that they don't need decent hardware to succeed, they're not going to spend money on it.

If the Wii does "win" it will benefit the whole market. Every non-gamer it attracts doesn't have to blindly follow the Wii, what will stop Joe Somebody from trying out a 360 or the PS3? I see the Wii as the gateway drug..errrr console.

People tend to go where the money is. If the money is unproportionalyl tipped in the direction of casuals, you can make an educated guess more developers will begin making casual games.

How I predict it: If the Wii wins this gen, Sony will go completely Grand Theft Wii-mote. So next gen, if the Wii wins, Sony and Nintendo will be competing in the "innovation" wars, but Sony will still try to stay in the "hardcore" market. Fighting a war on two fronts, Playstation 4 will fail!!!!!!11one111!!!!............ ok, maybe thats not exactly how it going to happen, but you never know.

Maybe they actually wanted to profit from their console and not have it be a failure? They knew that they couldn't survive off the 360/PS3 market so they expanded their range but once that range is expanded they can get away with more expensive hardware.

You're forgetting that when all those games came out, the PS2 was not the bigger and better console

Yeah they will FINALLY have to start thinking outside the box. Graphics and power aren'tr everything. the 360 and PS3 are too expensive. Never before have you had to pay so much for a console..it's ridiculous!

I most def dont want to see the Wii win cause I have a fear that devs would see that u dont need to spend millions of dollars making indepth/amazing games, rather take shortcuts and create a bunch of casual related games.

The Wii is a great console, but I agree that the type of games evolving on Nintendo's recent systems don't really appeal to the "hardcore" audience. Games like Brain Age took very little time, effort, and money to create but turned huge profits. The Wii itself is a simple, cheap, and easy to market system and if it becomes a huge success I don't see what would stop MS and Sony from following suite. Right now, though, I don't care so much since gamers are getting a choice. In the future though, as games become more complex and risky to create I think we will see an even greater number of simple games that are relatively safe bets for profit.
