i knew it would be something uncharted just by reading TC's username. and no. i thought it was an incredibly stupid sequence. just going by what i played from UC3, the sinking boat was much more interesting, though still far from "ZOMG SO GOOD BEST THING THE WHOLE GEN".BrunoBRS
So you agree that Uncharted 3 has the best set piece of this generation?
It's nice. Also lol @ "the moment at 6:16? ist the best game moment on this generation!". tagyhag
Wow...someone only has one Game this gen.
I'm getting pretty damn tired of "epic set pieces" in gaming.
goblaa
I'm tired of developers that don't know what they are doing, definitely tired of the generic FPS set pieces (just finished Darkness II, uggggghhhh).
Give me God of War and Uncharted every day though.

God of War 3 was pretty amazing. I need to get going on Uncharted 3, haven't even picked it up yet. PS3 = epic setpiece king.2Chalupas
Yeah, Uncharted 3, Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 are the top 3, IMO.
Here's my favorite set pieces from God of War 3, in order of appearance in game.

Whether someone likes set pieces or not has no effect on whether or not it's the best set piece of this generation.

here's the thing: setpieces are bad by definition. they're annoying, and limiting. they're restrictive. but if you broaden if to "awesome MOMENTS", rather than simply setpieces, then i could provide a crapton of them. to give a sony exclusive an example, the fight against false king allant at the end of boletaria castle in demon's souls is one of my favorite fights in the entire game, because of its pacing. but defeating any boss that was previously giving you trouble in that game far outdoes anything uncharted aims to achieve.Eh... no.
When a scene ripped straight from a Bond film is considered "the best thing ever" then there's a big problem.
u saying bond is bad? >.> no, he's saying a poor bond ripoff being considered the best gaming has to offer is bad.[QUOTE="UnrealLegend"]
Eh... no.

Eh, nah I really disagree. It was hyped to be awesome and in the end, wasn't that great. The ship and horse sequence was much better.
arkephonic, here's the problem with uncharted: it tries so hard, but so hard to be awesome, that it just becomes banal. that scene didn't make me go "whoa", it made me go "why is the plane suddenly on fire?". that desperate attempt to reach the maximum level of awesomeness backfires, and it becomes boring. shallow gameplay doesn't help.BrunoBRS

this was my favorite from this gen probably http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u43D3SDUjOU

I loved that one and bonus because that find was an ending (not just a random cool part in the game).
And it's not only just that, Uncharted 3 had so many more epic moments and or unbelievable gaming sequences to boot. The forum hate for Uncharted 3 truly is bananas. Every body I know in the REAL WORLD also loved Uncharted 3 like I did! Uncharted 3 is one of my favorite games of all time. F#ck the forum haters. -I was in control of Drake while the chatuae began to collapse in a stunning spectacle of destruction by fire (awesome fire ember effects) -I was in control of Drake while the cruise ship I was on had begun to be engulfed by the sea in spectacular, and jaw dropping fashion (some of the most beautifully rendered water I've ever seen in a video game coupled with some of the best water physics I've ever seen in a video game) -I was in control of Drake during the breath taking horse back riding sequence (Just a stunning, and breath-taking moment) -I was in control of Drake when the air plane that I was on was being ripped apart from the seams, in what was one of the greatest, and most epic moments in video game history IMO (All I can say here is "..........?" I tried to talk, but nothing came out, because my jaw was on the floor after just thinking about that playable sequence in U3. I had to pick it up to finish this sentence about Uncharted 3 haha) I mean... All those GAMEPLAY sequences would have been another games major cut scene, but in Uncharted , those events/and or playable set piece moments were its actual gameplay. You actually , for the most part, got to play through each sequence in ACTUAL gameplay. And whats even funnier is that a game like Gears of War 3 , which gets hailed for "having gameplay" actually has the same amount of total cut scene time as Uncharted(like already mentioned) Except that Gears could only dream of offering up the cinematic action that Uncharted does. brofists
The Uncharted game engine, the sheer number of animations and the complexity in which the player can interact with the environment provides pretty much limitless possibilities. I was a day 1 buyer of Drake's Fortune, and the first day I played it and got to the German submarine part, just the way he animates through it and ducks through the doorways is incredible. The traversal and verticality are also amazing, and the way they incorporate things like melee, stealth kills and shooting mechanics with it all is so well done.
I prefer the set pieces in Dead Space 2, like this one with the tormentor:

As far as set pieces go that one is pretty nice... thing is I find the "need" for set pieces in modern games detract from game more often than not. Rather than being used to enhance good gameplay they're typically used to add a sense of excitement to an otherwise bland experience. So obviously I don't care for set pieces and therefore don't find them to be memorable moments. So in an extremely long winded way I'm saying I cant think of a better set piece because I do not care lol.
Truly memorable gaming moments are born out of great game design, not flashy scripted sequences.

The animations are great, they just don't meld well with what's happening. ND needed to to make them connect better. With the Last of Us, though, it seems like they fixed it. For reference, look at Arkham City. Batman has way more animations than Drake, at least when it comes to hand-to-hand combat, and it all flows much better and connects, unlike Uncharted 3.

The way I see it, the alternative to that set piece would be just making it a CGI or realtime cutscene where you set the controller down and watch. Instead, they give you the ability to move around, shoot, take cover, traverse, and do everything else you're able to do. It's not like the entire game is as fast paced and action packed as this particular scene. There's a lot of slow paced segments of the game that focus on the core gameplay mechanics of traversal and third person shooting. At the end of the day, Naughty Dog is trying to tell a story and they're trying to provide some excitement. I commend them for giving the player interactivity during what would normally be cutscenes in any other game with no interactivity whatsoever.

Oh I agree. Better to have that set piece than have the player kick back for 10-20 minutes not even able to play a CG scene that ate away at the games budget. And I'm not even bashing UC2, its a fine game.
Just throwing in my .02 on set pieces in general and giving you (an overly long winded) reason on why I cant think of another to compare this one to.
oh i'm sorry, i didn't know playing through hours of the game invalidated it if you weren't playing yourself, at home. i went through all of the pirate section and the plane section, and i've played through all of uncharted 2 to know that UC3's gameplay won't improve past what i played. there's a reason i didn't play UC3 through. i couldn't stand it. if people consider UC2 better, than good god keep UC3 away from me.
