Whats funny is you hear almost no one who has Live complain about the price. Its only people who dont. I've played online PC games before. So has a couple of my friends. And they both love what Live offers. Its like "LIVE ISNT WORTH THE MONEY BECAUSE BLAH BLAH BLAH" but almost everyone who has live says its well worth it.

So far with 1 game and its not even live yet. And the only reason its coming out is because pc gamers begged for a service like live.

Why would we beg for Live? We have it better for free.

Well duh. Who is going to pay for Live if they don't think it's worth it. But just because people believe it is worth it, doesn't make it true.

Xbox Live experiences come to Windows-based PCs. Gamers will have the ability to jack into the vibrant Xbox Live world from their Windows-based PCs early next year to play games with friends. Answering the call of millions of Windows gamers for a world that is always on, the Xbox Live experience on Windows will give gamers a consistent online game experience in which they have one identity, one friends list, one set of achievements and voice communications across all games on the network. These experiences will debut on Windows with the Windows Vista™ operating system and “Shadowrun™” this winter.

Now I understand that this is from the M$ website so its bias, but the demand for a windows live came from somewhere. I dont care what you say about live. Almost every live gamer I have read or talk to say the service is worth it. Its people that dont play it that complain about the price. XBL ='s the **** and is worth the $4 a month.

[QUOTE="danabo"][QUOTE="cobrax25"][QUOTE="danabo"][QUOTE="Danm_999"][QUOTE="rhaigun"][QUOTE="Danm_999"][QUOTE="air0123"]PC's big online games cost money, WoW, Ever quest.danabo

Those are MMORPGs, the exception to the rule as they require much more intensive facilities. And when you play them on 360, you still need to pay for XBL AND the MMORPG fees. So the point is irrelevant, XBL still costs twice as much.

You are still for some reason, being charged for a fee that has not existed anywhere else.

Yeah, but when you have over a million people playing one game (GeoW) it pays to have facilities not unlike those an MMO has.

Counter Strike has more people playing (in fact, Counter Strike has 200,000 people playing at any time according to Steam). It does not require fees. Nor do the Unreal Series, which have more people than Gears of War, or Starcraft.

Then why am I paying £30 a month for a dedicated clan server for CS yet £30 a year to play on ALL 360 XBL enabled games? PSN is comparable to public servers, wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. XBL seems to be something of a middle ground.

Becuase £30 is split up by everyone in the server, is not neccesary if you already have your own server, and lets you mod.....

But I thought it was free? So now more than one person is paying for server costs or am I paying to run my own server? Somebody's paying for something, and this is just one game(CS). With XBL all games are enabled for a one off yearly payment of £30. When playing CS I'm paying, ironically, £360 a year.

[QUOTE="danabo"][QUOTE="cobrax25"] But thats a server host.... and if and only if, you are renting your server from a providor. Servers can be set up easily using cheap extra computers...

It's much cheaper to rent a server in the UK. Do you know how much the electricity/maintenance/upgrade bills would cost? Astronomical! I still love CS, but it's price is not the advantage. It's much more expensive to be a PC online gamer than paying £30 for a year of XBL. Period. I also pay £9 a month for WoW and have no complaints. What PC online has over XBL is the community. Seriously, I have to mute so many annoying "American gangsta kids" it's not funny. The fact that I'm paying to play a mod 7 years later and have not reurned to GeOW after my first week is a testament to PC's online.

I think this sums up the thread. Awaiting your reply cobra.

It's PR BS. Even you admit that in an indirect way. And the demand, is simply MS trying to integrate the two systems to help piggyback both on the userbase of the other.

All the stuff you get on Gold is the same as Silver except playing online, and we pay 50 bucks a year, so developers get an online that they don't have to work their asses off to get up and running.

Guess_With_ReX

Is that all?

Ask yourself... What IS playing online?

Sure Silver has friends list and messaging and access to the Marketplace. And yes, Gold add online play.  But.....

Does Silver have matchmaking? Does Silver support cross-game invites? Feedback? Does Silver need the personnel required to police that feedback? Do things like rep and gamerzone even mean anything until you have a Gold account?

Not really.

GUYS GUYS GUYS !!!!

Calm down and listen. Its $4 a month and it blows away anything that has ever been on consoles. Its awesome, its easy to use, its worth it. I probally loose $4 a month in change. $4 a month isnt even a beer and tip in the bar. Its $4. a month. Fine you guys dont think its worth it. But I will just state that I think you are wrong. And what I think is funny is that you play on PC. With the extra $600- ???? you pay a over console, you really wouldnt think $4 is that much money.

Sigh. The fact that you're not personally paying for the service doesn't mean it's not payed for. The server/maintenance/energy costs have to be paid for, the interwebs aren't some kind of magical device.

yes, maybe we may have to pay for dedicaded servers, if we dont have our own... and thats assuming we cant run the server directly from the same computer we are running on.... but energy Costs are very low for a Server, and overall are cheap to maintain. But we get a much different control over our servers then you do over yours, we can distribute matterials like Maps, Mods, and Add-ons directly throught the server. And I have yet to notice, and Shortage of Servers in any game.

No he doesnt.  A lot of people dont seem to realize what goes into making a really great public server.  I do... I may only throw 5 bucks towards my community servers on PC every few months, but I always do, becouse I appreciate how well they are run and moderated.  It does cost money and I am happy to pitch in with my fav. community servers.

Go look up the costs of Battlefield 2 or 2142 gaming servers. You can't run a 64 player server without a lots of bandwidth.  To say PC gaming is free is misleading.

Right.

And saying the the only difference between Gold and Silver XBL accounts is online play... that's just as misleading.

We still have to remember that we don't have to pay for XBL. I agree with a lot of points you guys have XBL has come along way since the 360 launch. But these are the reasons why I pay for XBL:

-  We can have braggin' rights and switch games on the fly (no installations)
- Download retro and new age games from arcade
 - No more Carpol Tunnel for me :0p
- Now we can download movies without leaving home.
- Play demos before I buy the game.
- Watch trailers
- Avoid people who are annoying

Yes all the things are free when you game online with a PC. But a lot of us don't play PC games that often or don't play them at all. MS will continue to update their product, because it's what we pay for

Why are you quoting me? lol, I'm the one paying £30 a month for a dedicated CS server :P Read above posts^

Yep its not free.  I will say this though... nothing can touch my community run servers.

A great community server makes all the differance in the world.

A great example is my CoD2 server that run the anarchy mod and leaves freindly fire on.  Its a 32 player server and the number of team kills is amazingly low... griefers maybe last 10 minutes on that server but I never actually get online and run into them, they are dealt with switfly.

There is no way you could get away with leaving FF on with a console game... the greifing would never stop.

Props to the people who run these servers for us.

All the stuff you get on Gold is the same as Silver except playing online, and we pay 50 bucks a year, so developers get an online that they don't have to work their asses off to get up and running.

Guess_With_ReX
what's sad is that all the cows make a big deal out of $50 a year, when they are the ones saying "dont bash ps3 because you cant afford it". PS2's online was laughable. No one does it better than xbox.

This thread has been majorly skewed.

Whether or not XBL gold fees are value for money is irrelevant. The TC said, XBL fees are paid so developers will put online content in their games. As I originally pointed out, this is not true as it has been happening for many years on PC without this incentive.

You guys can bash it all you want. I have no problem paying for it because I know what I'm getting. If I didn't think it was worth $4 a month, I wouldn't pay for it. The whole expierience is better than anything I've ever played on PC. It's not just words flashing across a screen. It's a person I'm talking to, laughing with or cussing at. It evokes emotions I'll never get out of a keyboard.

Live is the definitive way to play multiplayer.

Danm_999
You're argument is flawed because all these things are available on PC for free. I can play the games free, (or at the same cost if it's an MMORPG). I can use the universal friend lists and grouping programs for free (and Live is coming to Windows) I can use the voice chat programs like TeamSpeak or Ventrillo free.

Dude, all those things you said are fine, but not everyone has the skills nor the time to set up 20 little programs in the background to add voice, friend lists et cetera... to me, paying 4$/month is a good deal to have MS take care of all that. There is a price for everything we do. In your case, you may not pay the $4, but you pay with your time and possible frustration that is required to set everything up on a PC.

I don't see anything about content. Official mods (PC) expansion packs etc you would normally have to pay. Vice versa you still have to pay for DLC. I still think that price is irrelevant, PC online is more expensive but it is better. The FREE mods that the community distribute, aren't actually free (somebody's paying for that bandwidth) but they sure as hell make the experience much better. The PC Online community as a whole is a great place to be a part of.

The TC gives me the impression XBL fees are to support developers creating multiplayer components, providing them an incentive, which I disagree as being their purpose.

That's fine, i recognise that as a perfectly legitimate reason to use XBL.

Having to pay for XBL is bullcrap. That the money goes towards servers is also bullcrap since most of the game servers are user hosted like on PC's and PSN. Don't believe the propaganda. XBL is just more Microsoft money-mongering. Rune_Warrior

The money does go toward servers, just not dedicated game ones.  They still have to have servers for keeping track of everyone, what everyone is playing, acheivements, leaderboards, voice chat, marketplace, an inbox for each users messages etc.  All this infomation has to be hosted somewhere.

XFire gets it's money through advertising revenue, (think ABC or NBC network)

XBL gets it's money from the end user (think HBO or Showtime)

They all make their money, it's just a matter of who they get it from.

Now I don't use XFire so I'm not sure how that affects the end user (spam, popups, or just advertising on their homepage?)  I am however glad MS went the way they did, I would rather pay a small fee then get 15 messages a day in my message box from someone trying to sell me something, I get enough spam in my e-mail, I don't want it on XBL ;)

[QUOTE="Danm_999"][QUOTE="air0123"]PC's big online games cost money, WoW, Ever quest.cobrax25
Those are MMORPGs, the exception to the rule as they require much more intensive facilities. And when you play them on 360, you still need to pay for XBL AND the MMORPG fees. So the point is irrelevant, XBL still costs twice as much.

Ive always wondered how expensive it is to maintain an MMO server, I imagine its a insane amount.

After the initial hardware costs it is very little. When you have downtime maintencance in WoW all they are probably doing is backing up the logs. MMO servers arent anything fancy they are probably just a blade system from dell or sun.
