WRPG = choices, roleplaying and not linear.
JRPG= no real roleplaying, lead you by the nose and linear.
Its up to the individual to choose which they prefer
agree with your jrpg perspective to some degree but as for WRPG the whole choice things always changs little in the end you pretty much either get a good ending, bad ending, or inbetween ending.WRPG = choices, roleplaying and not linear.

I play both, but i prefer JRPG's. They usually do a better job of making an emotional attachment to the character/s, and the storyline_Tobli_
I like my RPG's to offer more roleplaying than rolewatching though, that is why while i love JRPG's, i enjoy and want much more to play WRPG's

But a game is not just its ending, it is the battles, the freedom to do anything, and not get stuck for hours in cut-scenes etc
Noob question here, but what does WRPG stand for?Exeed_Orbit
Western role playing games, as in RPGs not made in Japan.

Western role playing game. Basically game's like KOTOR.

However, it also includes all the sidequests, and some of these have major impacts apon the game.WRPG = choices, roleplaying and not linear.

but whats the point i'd rather watch cutscenes than rather make choices that really don't matter in the end becuase i can still do something to completely change the end later. my example is kotor. kotor is a great game in many respectcs but i never found a use for the choice element. the whole game you can contine to be and evil person or a good person or in between person but in teh final parts of teh game you can make choices that make you a good jedi or turn to teh dark side that completely ingnore what you did in the past.[QUOTE="saolin323"][QUOTE="Ragashahs"][QUOTE="blue_hazy_basic"]agree with your jrpg perspective to some degree but as for WRPG the whole choice things always changs little in the end you pretty much either get a good ending, bad ending, or inbetween ending.WRPG = choices, roleplaying and not linear.

KOTOR was a great game and this to an extent illustrates the choices. Why shouldn't a character steeped in the dark side at the last minute have that chance of redemption (like Vader in Return) or the chance of ultimate power be too much for that Jedi who has striven to do his best? You shouldn't be locked into a single path because of your previous decisions.[QUOTE="Ragashahs"][QUOTE="saolin323"][QUOTE="Ragashahs"][QUOTE="blue_hazy_basic"]agree with your jrpg perspective to some degree but as for WRPG the whole choice things always changs little in the end you pretty much either get a good ending, bad ending, or inbetween ending.WRPG = choices, roleplaying and not linear.

Redemption and falling are a critical part of many stories. I like the option. Again its all a personal preference.

agree it's personal prefereance but i do admit i like WRPG's when done right like kotor and MEWRPGs. Not to mention, if it wasnt for WRPGs, there would be no JRPGs. Dont forget the granddaddy of them all, started back in the 70s by Gary Gygax.... Dungeons and Dragons! Pencil and dice that was so popular, it eventually made its way onto game systems. ;)JediRiff
i have to say you did your research but nobody remebers Gary Gygax or at least i dont remeber, i was gonna say final fantasy 1 for the original nintendo being the grandaddy, but you got me there, but i cant really say d and d seeing that it was a real life game

Hehe... actually, I didnt do research on that... I lived it! I got the basic companions set for D&D back in 1982, and I was 12 at the time. That was my introduction to RPGs. I have been hooked ever since. I feel the comparison is valid, because if it wasnt for that, we wouldnt have what we have today, be it WRPGs or JRPGs. Its all about the roots! If this were a geneology tree, the base of the tree would be Dungeons and Dragons by the great Gary Gygax. The man basically paved the way for all our RPG fun today.

 Wrpgs began their life on computers in the 70'sThe first one I can remember on a computer (other than pure word based adventures) would have been Wizardry. I can remember it on the.... Apple IIe. Or was it the Apple IIc? Im not sure off the top of my head, but it was one of those.

There were text games and MUD's (multi user dungeons for the uniformed) before that.not to offend you guys but how old are you , if you know all this stuffAnimal-Mother
haha let me put it like this, I'm the wrong side of 30! I've been gaming since around 1979 :o!!!
I'm not convince Fable 2 will be a proper RPG, the first one certainly wasn't.Here is an exmaple of what WRPG's will offer in time, look at those Fable 2 blogs i found

Why wan Fable 1 not a true RPG ? It had a proper upgradable hero, armors, good/evil paths, quests that were great in their lore and unique, amazing magic and combos in battle, huge exploration, riddles that most RPG's never have, could buy whole cities too, kill anything, open the roads to merchants, kill huge beasts etc etc
What in your opinion makes it a non RPG ?

There were text games and MUD's (multi user dungeons for the uniformed) before that.Yeah, thats what I was talking about with the word based adventure part. Wasnt one of them called.... something like Wombat or something? However, I am 99% sure all of that came after the pencil and dice versions of D&D and AD&D. Animal-Mother, I am 37.
