Out of interest do you play PC RPG's?

To a certain degree. I've tried games like Neverwinter Nights but I didn't really like it and found it to be really boring and bland. Then I've played MMORPGs but thats not really the same thing i guess. To be honest the best RPGs I've played on the PC were ports from consoles (FFVII, FFVIII, KotOR). I guess I've always been more of a console RPGer... Then again The Witcher looks pretty good and I kind of want to try that one.

Neverwinter night´s strenght is in the option to make your own adventure using your toolset and then playing that adventure you created online, its really fun that way

I don't really like how you move around in it though. It just irritates me.

i like both but for now, might favorite is western. i used to be a huge final fantasy fan, but i haven't liked any ff since 10 came out. really i never liked dragon quest or some of the others suh as the atlus games. starting with kotor i began to enjoy western better. the last rpg i played was oblivion which is my favorite game this generation.

Try Baldurs gate or planetscape torment (which has a better story) if you want a roleplaying experience thats different to the console one. Personally I didn't really enjoy NWN that much.

Isn't Baldur's Gate pretty much Neverwinter Nights except older? It looks very similar atleast...

I hated the party system in NWN and I thought combat was weak. BG (2 especially) & Tormentare by far a superior games.

WRPGs are generally more progressive and experimental. They also are less linear and more realistic scenarios/environments. JRPGs are generally methodical and traditional. For that reason I prefer WRPGs.

Baldur's Gate's plot, storyline, variety in quests, and dialogue generally completely murders Mass Effect and NWN overall. KOTOR had some pretty good dialogue on par with BG though, at least. The combat's a lot tougher. It's straight D&D 2E, where mages become tiny gods capable of clearing rooms with single AoE save-or-die spell casts. Time Stop + death + death + death... or one-shot 99%-unresistable 'kill' spells like Imprisonment (effing bloody stupid freaking Kangaxx). Land a silence or one of the insect spells on a non-undead mage, and they're suddenly incapable of really doing anything unless they came prepared. Class balance wasn't really en vogue yet. The story and characters in BG/BG2 though... my god, they were so good. I still replay BG2 once every year or so, and have for the last seven or eight years. I think partially due to the lack of 100% voice acting, there was much more dialogue and many more conversation options, so you got to feel like you knew your party members a hell of a lot better. They'd chat with you, with each other, with NPC's, and generally do their own thing alongside you. Planescape: Torment was similar in that respect - the story, dialogue and characters 100% made the game. Definitely not the graphics, and usually not the combat. Fallout 2, same deal, though the combat itself became a heck of a lot of fun - it was very very very VERY slow action-point-turns-based combat, however fun it could be. But just having the total freedom to do almost anything you can imagine was wonderful. Trying to steal from a powerful crime lord's guarded safe? You can just blast your way in to the bedroom, sneak your way intp the bedroom.. or, oh, find his wife and sleep with her - boom, you're in the bedroom (and later on, sleep with his daughter for good measure)! A lot of the choices you made, you wouldn't see the ramifications coming until it was too late, i.e. 'now I'm in the mob boss' bedroom with his wife, she's asleep, and a bunch of men are playing pool outside. How do I get out of here?' Again, multiple paths to take, and on another playthrough you end up with a completely unrelated situation because you allied yourself with that same crime lord this time around.

i see myself playing JRPG's most of time, and that is because i really hate anything that involves castles, medieval stuff etc. Buti consider KOTOR the best rpg ever and i really enjoyed the second one and so i did enjoy Jade Empire for obvious reasons.

I prefer WRPGs, because I'm more a fan of non-linear gameplay and storytelling. I also like how WRPGs often give you a much larger license to customise and create characters.

That's not to say I don't like JRPGs, but I've always found it odd RPGs are the only genre we subdivide on geographical lines.

I'd say JRPGs, since they tend to make you feel more absurdly overpowered and character progression is the basis for all rpgs. I don't 'roleplay' as a character, either; i have no personal need for that escapism.

Indeed, while i am a console fanboy :), i LOVE WRPGS far more then the confined experiences of JRPGS

If you see what theyplan todo with Fable 2, you will know JRPG's are nothing comparing, even the best of them

Here is a taste od what could be the best RPG of all time for me, and is definatly not a JRPG

Both, and/or neither, depending on your preferences. I don't look at a particular "RPG" and say, "This is a WRPG, so I'll buy it, or not," or "This is a JRPG, so I hate it or not." If I see Mass Effect II or Final Fantasy XIV, I'll say, "I WANT THEM!" It doesn't matter to me; I'm a fan of both, and I prefer neither to the other, because both subgenres have their strengths and weaknesses...

To me, most WRPGs are dry on the story, VERY dry on the story; however, the actual Role Playing aspects are strong... Whereas, in a JRPG, the story tends to be there, it can be cliche or epic, but it's there and not disjointed like in an WRPG, but the "Role Playing" is non existent, you are essentially NOT "Role Playing" in JRPGs, because it's linear. Either way, I enjoy both, so it works for me. I can play both without being bias to the other..

I am like you, with a small difference, i always enjoy playing a good WRPG more due to more freedom and more involving gameplay than a JRPG, while i LOVE playing bot kinds indeed, but the feeling in WRPG's i get is just more .... superior, more fullfilling, than the confined JRPG's that can get VEY tedious some times

WRPGs offer freedom, but what good is that freedom if there is no coherent or decent story to absorb yourself into, creating all the decisions to flesh that story out in a well crafted manner? That is the main flaw I see.. There have been exceptions, but most are like this. Same with JRPGs, but instead of the story, it's the linear fashion in which it's structured and the way you have no control over your characters' choices and morals, instead following a linear path. As an avid "RPG" gamer, I came across two exceptions to both of these overall generalizations, one from seven years ago and one that I'm playing now; Chrono Cross and Mass Effect, respectively. Two examples of what both subgenres can do, but that's just my opinion. Even so, ME's story is a little on the dry side too, and CC is linear, but not in a confined way, as there are choices within the game that affect the outcome and how characters can perceive your "Main" character.

If WRPGs can focus on the story, and JRPGs can focus on the linearity, I can imagine the possibilities.. An RPG game with an engrossing story, full customization of your character, morality and ethic choices that affect both the outcome and how the game is played, as well as possibilities of multiple battle systems to fit the players' needs.. Meh, tis only a dream..

This is such a pointless battle. All because two completely different genres have been mistakenly named the same thing.

WRPG lovers argue: "JRPGs sux!! They are so linear!!"

yet those same gamers probably love HL2, which is completely linear. The problem arises because it's called an RPG, so they expect it to be non-linear.

JRPG lovers argue: "WRPGs sux!! They have such weak stories!!"

Yet they probably love other games with crap stories, such as Super Smash Bros or Mario. Again, they only find a problem because they are expecting something that was never intended to be there.

Imagine if platformers and FPS's were both known as "Gloop". Third person Gloop fans would hate first person gloop games for having no variety. First person Gloop fans would hate the 3rd person gloop games for having weak combat and childish graphics. They could spend years arguing over it.

This is what the WRPG/JRPG debate looks like from the outside. I do not think that is an exaggerated analogy - the difference between WRPGs and JRPGs really is about as large as the difference between shooters and platformers.

So please, don't bring up this tired argument again. It should never have started in the first place.

Hmm, I think both sides were better back in the day.

My favorite RPG list would probably start with
1. Baldur's Gate 2
2. Chrono Trigger

I haven't seen a decent JRPG since the SNES days, and I've only seen WRPG's degrade more and more.
Oblivion and KOTOR great? Seriously, do you like steadily decreasing quality? Seems so.

But still WRPG's for me. It's tempting to say JRPG's are kiddy or anime-ish (which I can't stand neither, though I did watch a lot of anime back in the day....but didn't we all) but I just think WRPG's are generally more "serious". I really don't know how to explain.

Seriously, JRPG's can't really compete really. If there's anyone here who's been playing since the 1980's/90's, they'll tell you that WRPG's were pwning buttocks before the JRPG even existed.
And another thing, a lot of people seem to think that Oblivion is the pinnacle of WRPGing, and that JRPG's have more story, character etc. etc. Well, like I said, WRPGs have been degrading like hell. Play BG2 or Planescape Torment, best stories and characters EVAR!!!!(fanboy twitch, forgive me)

Well, the truth of the matter is... to each their own. I grew up on WRPGs, and I prefer WRPGs. It has nothing to do with Gamespot. My two biggest gripes with JRPGs are this: It seems the majority of them have androgenous characters where you cannot tell if they are male or female, and the biggest one is harder for me to describe. I hate the little pokemon weird characters that act so blasted silly all the time. Example, look at Blue Dragon. When I played the demo, you had this little yellow monk guy that looked like he was wearing a wok on his head, and chirped when he won a battle. Those kind of characters, which seem prevelant in alot of JRPGs, irritate the hell out of me. I'm not going to knock anyone who likes JRPGs, again its personal preference, but those two things drive me batty and completely push me away from the games usually.

i see myself playing JRPG's most of time, and that is because i really hate anything that involves castles, medieval stuff etc. Buti consider KOTOR the best rpg ever and i really enjoyed the second one and so i did enjoy Jade Empire for obvious reasons.

Kiuk

As did I, Kiuk. You would really, really enjoy Mass Effect.

I like the WRPG formula better though my absolute favorite RPGs are ironically JRPGs

Only on gamespot would people think WRPGS are better than JRPGS/greenleaf2000

Only on gamespot do you get ignorant consolites who have never experienced a proper RPG and think they know everything and that no-one else's opinion is valid.

I hope you enjoy your 8 hr long games with no replay value that the blu ray has brought you.

JRPGs by a long long way... they've actaully got stories that are not all generic LOTR clones (orcs and elves) and you have individual characters with personalities and "style"... and they actually are varied in their systems rather than just repeating the same themes over and over. They dont just chuck you in the middle of nowhere and call it "freedom"
