I'm not by any means saying that "WRPGs are bad games" cause I dont think they are... I just like JRPGs a lot more, a lot less generic
I prefer a great story with solid gameplay. As long as those two feature, I couldn't care less which kind it is.
FF7 is my favorite RPG of all time, because of the story, but I definitely prefer WRPGs. Action RPGs too. I hope the release of Diablo 3 fuels a ton of new Diablo clones. Consoles in particular need a game like Diablo. jjenkins78x
Check out Divine Divinity if your as big of a diablo fan as i am man (:
I cant wait for Diablo3 and Divine Divinity2!
Planescape: Torment, Fallout, KotOR, Mass Effect, Arcanum and Bloodlines would like a word with you.JRPGs by a long long way... they've actaully got stories that are not all generic LOTR clones (orcs and elves) and you have individual characters with personalities and "style"... and they actually are varied in their systems rather than just repeating the same themes over and over. They dont just chuck you in the middle of nowhere and call it "freedom"

JRPGs. I've tried to enjoy WRPGs, went for the apparently best of the best such asthe originalFallout and Planescape Torment, but none of them have been able to hold me attention for very long. I guess they're just not my type of game.
I've never played a WRPG. Mostly because I just don't like the art style in them so I've never been attracted to them.
why do those games want a word with me?
Velocity_Eleven
You stepped into his 'hood'. Look at robbie's sig + avatar lol.
JRPGs have an established place for me, but WRPGs are starting to take ground for me. I had never given a crap about WRPGs, but after playing fallout 3 my eyes are starting to open. But for now, JRPGs > WRPGs.
well, you also got the WRPGs that are in the future with guns and stuff... but that doesnt change that its a pain to look at, I seriously cant take them seriously enough, when every character tries to be "super serious" I find it rather absurd
PC - WRPGand dating-sims (choices and consequences...)
PSx / PS2 - JRPG
OVerall, I prefer tabletop (make your own choices)
I think it's fine you like JRPG's more, but 'less generic'? That's an odd reason since one of the main criticisms aimed towards JRPG's is the similarities in character design and storys between games.I'm not by any means saying that "WRPGs are bad games" cause I dont think they are... similarities? of al the JRPGs Ive played I dont recall there being any similarities, none that are worthy of mentioning anyway
I played oblivion and hated it and played mass effect and loved it. Overall i prefer JRPGs a whole lot more. The only current WRPG i like is mass effect. However i also like old WRPGs such as Star Control 2, baldurs gate and diablo. Star Control 2 is probably my favourite RPG though.
Be prepared to be bombarded with the following hyperbole: Female protagonists posing as males with hair so spiky it hurts Always involves a save the world plot Pretty much asked for it though, as using the WRPG stereotypes willl invoke the wrath of JRPG stereotypes. Of course both are completely untrue, but they seem to exist in a state of simultaneous conflict and harmony.similarities? of al the JRPGs Ive played I dont recall there being any similarities, none that are worthy of mentioning anyway

I've heard the "spikey hair" and "effeminate male" arguments before, both of which are not true... I mean, lets look at even just final fantasy for example (as it's the prime suspect of this type of critisism), how many of those main characters characters have spikey hair?
Firion? No
Luneth? No
Cecil? No
Bartz? Not really
Terra? No
Cloud? Yes
Squall? No
Zidane? No
Tidus? No
Vaan? No
And as for effeminate, well only Vaan and Kuja that I can think of

All JRPGs are completely unique and never ever ever resort to cliches. I'm not denying that they haven't. It's just that, as most of the mainstream WRPGs spawn their cliches and are guilty of said cliches, the reason for those cliches is because mainly mainstream JRPGs are guilty of those cliches. I did state that they were both untrue; what I should have perhaps said is that they are untrue in the majority of their subgenres. Instead, we create and propogate these cliches by mainstream entries. I could point to a multitude of great JRPGs and WRPGs that come nowhere close to their cliches. Cliches exist due to overuse in mainstream. They're cliches because they constantly occur in the only examples people know, and thus are blown out of proportion. This does not mean that they have never been used. I'm not quite sure how you inferred that me calling it hyperbole meant that they never actually occur multiple times.similarities? of al the JRPGs Ive played I dont recall there being any similarities, none that are worthy of mentioning anyway

JRPG by continents, oceans, and whole worlds. Most WRPGs have uninteresting characters and terrible stories imo.

Most ridiculous post I've read all week. And most jrpgs don't have horrible characters and stories?
Oh, please. With the exception of very few do any jrpgs even come within a mile of Planescape Torments story or characters.
There are more wrpgs with good stories and characters than jrpgs.
How many jrpgs have less than fifteen of the cliches listed:http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html
Most wrpgs have terrible stories and characters.......and jrpgs don't, yeah right.

You said: "Of course both are completely untrue,"
Which seems to indicate that you think they're rare or something, but from my perspective the genre is absolutely bursting with them. And I'm not even talking about FF here.
I'm fully aware that not every JRPG uses cliches, but I also realize that the majority do.

Ah yes, I do see the inference there. I think in my head I was thinking how people seem to bring them up more than they actually occur. It's more my being fed up with them and how people seem to harp on the stereotypes of JRPGs, and praise WRPGs as infinitely original, or vice versa. Both genres have gotten, for the most part, quite predictable. Many JRPGs are indeed guilty of these stereotypes, though really, how many of the JRPGs we call cliche have some involvement by Square-Enix, the biggest culprit? Sorry for the vague words though. Allow me to rephrase: "People make WRPGs and JRPGs appear to use the same few elements in every single game, when the actual occurence is far less"Allow me to rephrase: "People make WRPGs and JRPGs appear to use the same few elements in every single game, when the actual occurence is far less"NirronI can live with that.
I like JRPGs much more than WRPGs because of better story/character development, artistic style, and combat systems.

I think they're about equal in that regard.

That list is a load of nonsence, on most occasions I could think of 1 example of each of those. And the ones that are frequent are as stupid as "in platform games you jump" such as the one where it said there is a boss harder than the final boss that is hidden somewhere... well, of course, thats a good game feature, if there was no hidden bosses that are harder than the final boss then that's just lame
That list is a load of nonsence, on most occasions I could think of 1 example of each of those.Velocity_ElevenYou must not play many JRPGs, or at least not many outside of one series. All of those are very common, or used to be common in the SNES days.

Barely any in Fallout 3 and Oblivion.
The Witcher's pretty good though.

Bethesda isn't too big on that sort of thing. Try Bioware games, or anything based on P&P RPGs (like Planescape: Torment) for a real story.

and some of the early pokemon games... I might be missing a few, but that's all i can think of right now
this seems very unfair, JRPGs are mostly limited Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and the millions of clones of those games, and some good ones. While WRPGs can be first person adventure games like Elder Scrolls, online games like World of Warcraft, action and and intense like Diablo, or even.... actually role playing like Fallout 1 and 2.Nerkcon
when I look at a game, I go beyond whats on the surface... I'm not bothered about whether the game is action, turn based, random battles, first person etc. cause to me that's just at face value... I always look into the deeper areas, such as how skills are developed, how things are dependant on other things, how easily can things be modified. For example i would usually not be as satified with something that's "you level up, and therefore learn the heal spell". I would much prefer something with more depth to it such as if you could modify character's abilities at the expense of something else, and have all these wacky ways of modifying your characters
For me it used to be all about the JRPGs
Final Fantasy, Star Ocean, Shadow Hearts, Dragon Quest...
But lately I've enjoyed WRPGs much much more.
