you guys are so bad at history. who ever says that the ps 3 and 360 can't do crysis graphics are either so far up crysis butt or are new to gaming. remember the game god of war 2 (ps 2) or soul reaver (ps 1) ect. once these dev's find short cuts and find new ways to use these consoles tech to at least 80% of the cosoles ect. there are going to be games that will surppass crysis graphics in 3 to 4 years from now.

more so for 4 years from now pc games.

you guys are also saying that there will be nothing until next gen 5 to 6 years from now that nothing will look good as crysis means that any one that has played crysis will not wow at another game for at least 5 years from now is a very bad thing for alll gamers. but really this will not happen considering it never happened in the past or the history of gaming.

yes the pc will always ahead put not 5 to 6 years ahead.

GARRYTH

Hardware in the past is different from hardware today. In the past, consoles were almost wholly proprietary. Today, they are more or less PCs. I'm sorry, but optimization you saw you in the past, won't have the same yields today or in the future.

well sence there more like pc then it should be easier now than in the past to get med. settings of a pc quality graphics.

Since they are more like PCs, developers already know most of the optimization techniques going into it.

I wouldn't call Far Cry 2 "free-roaming." The player is forced to keep cars on roads and travels from "level" to "level." In the most recent gameplay footage of the 360 version, the player tried to take the jeep off-road and hit an invisible wall.

No. Maybe next gen. PS3 and 360 don't have enough ram. There are also other issues at play, but I see this as the main reason why this won't happen.dhjohns

maybe crysis like graphics in small evironments? that seems totally achievable, although it will ruin any kind of freedom and become a CoD4 clone in terms of linearity.

Yes, it's been proven before that given that it'll take maybe 3 years. Certain techniques are developed to work on consoles to improve visuals in games.

No, you will not see graphics like Crysis on this generation. here's a funny thought, if you do see it on next generation us PC gamers will be enjoying the new "Crysis" graphics wonder whatever it may be.Jade_Monkey

Exactly. So now all those tricks that they came across before have been shoved into there faces in the beginning instead of having to find them out. Thats why graphics havent really eveloved that much on consoles this gen.

I dont know why everyone is so impressed with farcry2. Im still waiting to be blown away. STALKER: Clear SKies to me still looks like the game to own(FPS wise) this year for PC gamers. Doesnt mean I wont be picking up farcry2. Im just still yet to be wowed.

Killfox

Yep I agree, FC2's graphics really aren't that impressive and certainly aren't anything we havn't seen before (although consoles might not).

But back on topic, I honestly don't think graphics are going to improve hugely on consoles when devs are struggling to run games like CoD4 at anything like what medium settings look like on PC.

Maybe... but I quarentee it will run at less than 30FPS at a non HD resolution such as the 600p's consoles seem to be running with most of their games.

Then again I highly doubt it.

Don't be dumb, COD4 on consoles run the same textures, detail, specular highlighting, etc that high does on PC but at a lower FPS/resolution.

Crysis could prob. done at medium settings @ 720p on consoles. Far Cry 2 and the avalache 2.0 engine featured in just cause 2 are proof of it.

Then explain the video clip. It's not an open world unless you can really access every last bit of the place at any time. Not even Crysis is that open, last I checked. And it required vast amounts of memory to operate. How does Crytek intend to crunch a 50-sq-mi area into less than 512MB of memory (or as I like to put it, try to fit a baker's dozen in an egg carton)?

GARRYTH

Look, I'm sick to death of hermits glorifying Crysis as well. But I have to be honest...this gen is different in the fact that consoles are beginning to get WAY BEHIND PCs in graphics. Sure, in past gens, during a final stretch before a new gen would begin, consoles would have graphics that could compete with PC graphics from a couple of years ago. The only time this gen consoles competed with PC graphics was at the very beginning of this gen...then PCs took a major leap forward in graphics...so big a leap that consoles will not catch up this gen. And it will only get worse I think. I am definitely not a hermit, but it really looks like consoles will not even come close to having Crysis-like graphics at the end of this gen.

And one of the big problems is that consoles aren't evolving much in graphics this gen. Other than Uncharted and Gears of War, nothing is looking any better. GeOW 2 looks SLIGHTLY better I guess, but it should look much better.

not sure, not too many details have been released. I do know it has volumetric effects, real time dynamic weather, a deformation system, andfairly nice self shadowing.

It's should prove to match crysis at medium or slightly more on consoles @ 720p.

Course nothing matches crysis at it's ultra high settings.

[QUOTE="rimnet00"][QUOTE="Zerostatic0"]In my opinion, not quite but the gap will have closed a bit, besides it's not like there is that huge of a difference in visuals between games like Uncharted/Call of Duty 4/Assassin's Creed and Crysis.Thompsonwhore

Actually... it's a huge difference if you have played it. I try not to sound biased... but I really don't think I am, seeing as I've played all those games you've mentioned on 99th percentile setup.

Mine's better than yours, because my TV is better, my monitor is better, and I don't have a Wii or Xbox 360 to detract from them.

Wow, you sound so spoiled it's not really even funny. Ok, I lol'd a bit

I think they'll get a lot better. Look at God of War versus God of War II on the PS2. Or Splinter Cell versus Splinter Cell Chaos Theory on the xbox. Both of the original games were thought to look amazing when they came out. The sequals blew the originals away in terms of graphics. I don't think it's so much about "tapping hidden power" as it is about developing new game engines that deliever more while using less power.

But most console games are at 1280x720 (720p, if they even get there). PC games can be played at much higher resolutions. Higher resolutions really look at lot better.

Tell yourself, why are there better looking games running at 720p or slightly better? COD4 is not the best graphics on the console.

If anything the 600p(+AA i believe on the 360 in the vein of 2x) tells me they wanted it to fit within the 360's EDRAM, then ported over.

Theres more to it than just that, Crysis is a very large open area, fully destructable enviornments and massively detailed, the consoles hardware cannot put enough poly's on the screen to compete with Crysis, especially with how big Crysis is and everything that goes on in Crysis.

The consoles just don't have enough RAM (Which is a devs biggest bottleneck) to have such a massive open area, not to mention the RSX nor the Xenos have enough power to push how many poly's Crysis is putting on the screen.

Far Cry 2 looks spectacular. But i think we'll have to wait till atleast Gran Turismo 5 to see those kind of graphics on consoles.

Ugh...disgusting. That's the only word I can come up with.

And to put it in perspective, just in system memory, Crysis is said to demand over 600MB of RAM all by itself...on Low.

I'm sure they can play a downgraded Crysis.

Next generation I'm sure would be able to play at Crysis level, probably a bit better. But that not going to stop PC from advancing, I'm sure 8 years now their will be a new PC shooter with amazing graphics that will be causing questions if their is any chance that can be transfered to the xbox 720 or the Playstation 4, which will be filled with answers from many people saying "no way PC for the win" or "yeah the untapped powerz of the ps4 will rain down ur stupid pc" and people calling people those idiotic words like "lemmings" "cows" or "sheep".

I don't think we'll ever see a shooter with Crysis-level graphical complexity (hundreds of highly detailed trees, bushes, and grass with a large view distance, hundreds of physics props, etc.) on a console this generation. There could, however, be a game in a different genre--adventure, for example--that could be more visually beautiful than Crysis.

Just wondering, what do you guys think? Say in 2011 how much of the systems powers will be tapped, and what kind of graphics will we be seeing? Thanks.

Coredog777

COD4 runs in 600p.

Halo3 runs in 640p with no AA.

GTA4 is also a jaggy fest.

If you think that the consoles arent already taped out then what can I say.

From what I have seen it takes 2 Geforce 9800x2s for Crysis to run at 50fps on max settings at 1920x1200 res

best of luck to the consoles

what most people fail to ralize is that the consoles are very capable of running Crysis at medium to high settings, its just that crysis is to far open and the lack of Ram on the consoles holds it back. but i am confident that some good optimization the consoles could run the game quite well in linear fashion. and to people saying the nex gen consoles might run it are you insane the nex gen consoles will run games that look 3x crysis on max settings.

I wish I could say so, but it looks like the time of massive graphics expansion is over. It was a really amazing to a gamer during these times, but now it's just so underwhelming. We got spoiled, now it's time for new ways of play, not graphics.
