A few people have been complaining about Grand Theft Auto IV receiving a better score on GameSpot (a perfect 10) than Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (which received a 9.6). So I would just like to know, do you really think that GTA IV is better than GTA San Andreas? Feel free to post your thoughts here.

I enjoyed GTA San Andreas (PC) far more than GTA IV (PC). Both are great games. I do think that San Andreas was better though.

I think it had the best driving mechanics. All the other games felt like go karts, while GTA IV's cars felt like they had weight to them.

To me, I thought that GTAIV had a better story (still laughible though), but SA offered a lot more.

I bought San Andreas for PC for $10, but couldn't stand using k/m to play it and couldn't find my PC controller. Then I got a PS3 and GTA4. Until I played San Andreas I thought GTA4 was the best by far. Then I found my PC controller and played San Andreas. I can't believe how watered down GTA4 is compared to San Andreas. The only thing better about GTA4 over San Andreas is the graphics. Everything else about GTA4 is a downgrade. How it got a ten here is beyond me, but it tells me a lot about GS and their reviews. If GTA4 is a 10, then San Andreas is a 12-13. With that said, I also enjoyed GTA4.

I still play IV regularly, haven't touched San Andreas in years. However, the missions in San Andreas were pretty fun and I wouldn't mind going through them again, it'd be a chore to do all the missions in IV to get to the Bank one.

Yes, I didn't like San Andreas much at all but neither of them are anythingn special. GTA III is still the best with Vice City behind it and what I go to play when I'm in the mood for a GTA game.

Yeah yeah I'm being a grammar police or whatever. But why would you put a comma there? Lol like where have you read or learned from school that a comma there is correct. Do you even talk like that in real life? haha. Sorry I'm not trying to be mean but it just really stuck out when I read your post.

Different styles. I enjoyed both equally. When playing GTA4 I enjoyed the more serious direction and of course the incredible attention to detail. The atmosphere was amazing too as was the variety of the characters, radio stations etc. But San Andreas is good too for classic GTA insanity and some of the most inspired missions in the series so far (trip to liberty city, burning The Truth's 'crop'). And lets not forget the new ideas it added to the series, like the rpg-lite character customisation and stats, which were strangely absent from 4. In many ways 4 was a downgrade as well as an upgrade, which is why I think so many people hated it. It just wasn't as fun as SA, but I guess that comes with the territory of the more powerful hardware, the realistic physics and the more focused storytelling.

San Andreas is my equal first favourite game of all time... It was brilliant (I still play it!). GTA IV is a good game but it lacked the outright addictiveness that SA had.

San Andreas is one of my least favourite GTA games. I felt there was a bunch of crap thrown in for the hell of it and that didn't do it for me. I couldn't get into the story, thus I didn't care what happened and I didn't get attached to any of the characters. I felt the opposite about GTA IV. I loved the story, characters and I found the game play to be a lot better. I thought GTA IV had just the right amount of side missions to do, rather than having a bunch of random mini missions thrown in. There are some things I do miss from the past GTA games like vigilante missions and ambulance missions which would increase armour and give you infinite sprint but overall I found GTA IV to be an improvement over the past games.

That's interesting... I'm pretty much opposite to you. I thought SA had the more engaging story & the characters were very well done. I also liked the environment in SA better... You had the mixture of city, suburbs, farm/country land, deserts etc, which gave it plenty of variety instead of all buildings in GTA 4.

GTA SA is so much better because, there was a wider area that you can go to which was mainly of cities, farms and country settings. You could do a lot more things in SA than GTA 4. Also, in GTA SA you could play planes but in GTA 4 you can only play helicopters which pretty much sucked. Planes are awesome to fly in GTA. Rockstars should make the next GTA game as best as San Andreas was.

Errr, why not? A comma suggests a PAUSE or breathe in a sentence. In my case i added it for more seriousness. Since Realism in a game like GTA would be more FUN, IMO. I have always found it hilarious when people correct others in a forum. This isn't a spelling/punctuation contest. That being said, i have a feeling there was a motive behind your call. Maybe my sig, pissed you off? don't know..don't care. Have a nice day.

between those two i'd say San Andreas for story, gameplay, but IV for the lulz from playing with friends and the physics

overall i'd say i enjoyed Chinatown Wars more than both of those though, much more

Half in what makes GTA4 better is the realism, IMO..animations, explosions, physics and just the upgraded tech. Going back to SA is damn hard, its a night and day difference. I still don't get what people mean when they say, realism killed the fun.

GTA IV is clearly the leader in the technical department, and is better presented with a better story...but I had so much more fun with San Andreas.

Vice City > both, though.

SA had a much better story, and more importantly SA missions > 4's missions by a long shot. Niko kind of bugs me too, I can't really feel for the guy and the other characters all pretty much annoy me to some extant. GTA4 is a lot better for wanton destruction if you enjoy that type of thing, and i do. The physics and car handling in 4 are much better as well, SA's feels too arcadey now after having played 4. In the end I still like SA more, but I enjoy causing chaos in GTA 4. Now if they remade SA with GTA4 engine I'd be a happy gamer.

The realism just wasn't that fun. Rampages and stuff like that were made near impossible seeing as you died in 5 hits. It's a great game though don't get me wrong.

going back to san andreas was a dream, and going back to GTA IV was unREAL.Realism killed driving, realism killed the way you move in that game, realism killed fighting, realism killed the overall attitude of GTA.GTA isn't suppose to be a "serious", so called "Dark Game" if you look back at the last 3 GTAs. Its supposed to be about free roam Kill 'Em All fun with plenty of great weapons, vehicles, and explosions!wat your left with in GTA IV is a game that likes to look at itself in the mirror.thats it.

bcos gamers today prefer mindless games that require no thinking, no adjustment, no adapting. Seriously, it took about an hour for me to get used to the chnages in GTA4, thats all, and it turned out better.

me too, i think it's gta3(started the 3d gta's), gta4(changed the series to seem more serious), san andreas(improved on gta3 and made it bigger), vice city (didn't do much different to gta3), gta 1(cool when it came out), gta london (like gta but with annoying londoners)

not played any others.
