People need to learn a little history, read up on the Microsoft monopoly case in the late 90s, and how they were told they are not allowed to sell computer hardware or computers as a whole. The reason they got in the gaming market is because consoles are really close to PC's and it was a loophole in the system.

Microsoft doesn't care about gamers, never will, they just wanna run the show, and monopolize like usual.

Enjoy faulty hardware.

chris_yz80

Thats an unfair statement to make, every corporation in the world wants to monopolise and shove their products down our throats including sony and nintendo. None of the 3 companies care about gaming they care about the bottom line. Look at sony first they got arigant with the ps3 thinking that 120million ppl would just buy their product becuase they had a ps2 and i'm sure if they could they would buyout every single elcetronics comapny so you had to go out and buy their electronics exclusively, now look at nintendo this generation they are just selling the Wii, they are not delivering any qualtiy games for it (this isnt a statement against the inhouse dev teams, SSBB is one of my favourite games atm, but more at the fact they let anything get published on their system). In the end all the companies are the same.

NONE of the big 3 are small niche companies that want to give people what they want like stardock, they are there to make a profit at the end of the day.

And to actually add to the thread innovation will only come with more competition. This means microsoft did one of the greatest things ever in the console gaming world, they entered the market.

It's very fair, because microsoft is the only company out of the 3 actually to have a monopoly and to go to court for it.

Nope, not really. They have helped develop console online networks, but other than that, they pretty much fed off the growth of the gaming industry, not a bad thing either though.

I believe Microsoft has brought us something that builds upon what already existed with consoles. They brought us a unified online network that enhances the gaming experience. They took Sony's ideas of a multimedia gaming machine and more powerful graphic processing and added a very expansive and powerful online network.

We see online leading the way this gen. Everything on the PS3 and 360 is about online infrastructure. Microsoft has now done as much to gaming as Sony and Nintendo.

Each of the companies has taken previous gaming ideas and standards and have added their own unique aspect to them. All of which have brought us to what we believe playing video games are today.

We all know, thanks to Microsoft, that Sony put online on the PS3 because the Xbox had it. If they didn't then the PS2 would've had it...

SolidTy

That's not true, Sony went Online with Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, SOCOM, and others way before XBOX LIVE WAS ever created.

Microsoft's efforts though, did keep Sony on the right track.

Someone already corrected me lol. But yeah, you're right as well I suppose :)

Having a game or two online is far different than having an online service. Without XBL, I think online on the PS3 would be nothing more than a bunch of disjointed games with minimal online capabilities.

MS does not know how to create, only how to steal and monopolize. This is their business creed and nobody has ever cared because there is nothing they can do about it. MS controls the PC industry, and as more and more people buy into their system, they might soon control the gaming industry if gamers aren't careful. Atari crashed the gaming scene when it flooded the market with generic and repetitive games, and MS is following those same ideologies.

Look at Vista as an example. MS tried to release a sub-par, broken product to the public, and they had no shame about it. They did the same with the 360. Again, no shame at releasing a broken product.

I have no faith in MS anymore. I hate windows, and I don't care much for the 360, and I weep for the poor people that are fueling MS monopoly machine, because when they win- gamers will lose.

efrucht
You have one problem with your argument. MS is not pumping out crappy games like Atari. MS is actually securing and releasing quality titles. That alone sets them apart. I don't want a monopoly, but I don't mind MS being one contender in the videogame industry. If MS runs Nintendo and Sony out of the industry then we have a problem. Right now, the big three are mostly competing on an equal level, so we have nothing to worry about.

Sony and MS havn't really done much imo.

Nintendo however were the greatest game company for 20 years and there was really nothing to match it when Zelda and Super Mario made their debut.

GARRYTH

ps eye

dvd playback and cd playback

bring mature gamers in the market not just teens and children.

if a company that has brought nothing to gaming how did they become number 1 in one generation.

having a market of 30 million to 100 million is huge don't you think.

Many consoles had CD playback way before the PSOne. Turbo Grafx 16, Sega CD, 3DO just to name a few.

Sony has done alot more copying, and ripping off than actually innovating.

Wrong. I'm pretty sure that was the Sega Dreamcast. You have them to thank for online gaming on consoles.

Wrong. You can thank Xband for the SNES, and Genesis for online console gaming.

Some people need to give credit where credit is due... MS really pushed online gaming to new heights. I have a feeling there wouldnt be a "PSN" without Xbox Live.

And yeah, MS isnt the most innovative company all the time. (Avatars, Zune, Xbox Vision, Lips, etc) but they have had their innovative moments. Not to mention MS isnt the only people who copy, heck Sony copied Xbox Live.

EmperorSupreme

Have they innovated anything?? Live is basically a ripoff of other systems that were already on PC. Bringing it to consoles is something they have done, but thats not really innovating.

Why say that MS is ripping off other systems that are on the PC, when Sony is doing the exact samething. It takes a pretty big fanboy to point the finger at one company, but not the other.

By your logic, you agree that PSN is a direct, and poor rip off of Live, and any other online service that you claim Live is a rip off of.

While we're at it, let's go ahead and take your logic a little further. Home is nothing but a Second Life/The Sims rip off. It's nothing special.

In all reality, The PS3 has NOTHING original going for it right now. Sony has been the less innovative of all the next gen companies.

i said REAL network

Agreed. Dreamcast's idea, MS expanded it. Leo DaVinci created the first helicopter, did anyone really enjoy it?

ms have made console gaming terrable. I don't want patches on console games or constant updates or installing games (sure ms doesn't do it but if it wasn't for them they wouldn't exsist)

all ms has done is turn consoles gaming into a closed pc for games and brought lots of problems with it.

Fixed.

And Counter-Strike wasn't popular?

Its numbers regularly surpass those of Halo 3, and its nearly 10 years old.

the mainstream, aka normal people, dont play PC games other than maybe WOW. And btw any computer can run CS, and there are millions of more cheap little PC's in the world hooked up to the internet. Halo made gaming cool

keep thinking that. there is nothing "cool" about halo and pc gaming is just as mainstream as xbox

Then blame EA and Sony as they were doing this long before Madden with Roster downloads and updates before XBL even had Madden online.

Hell even the Dreamcast had updates. There were also roster updates for their sports game.

in different ways all of them contributed to the gaming industry... its not just Consoles, PC's also were/are important to the gaming industry..

Also its important not to forget the likes of Sega, Atari, Neo Geo, Commodore, Amiga, ZX Sinclair, Amstrad etc etc...these also were important at a certain time in the gaming industry.. Those like me who are in their late 20's or else in their 30's or more, surely remember and have owned systems brought by these companies and enjoyed many great games..

MS just bought their way into gaming... Hardly innovative as Nintendo or Sony. Their only individual achievement is Xbox LIVE, and even its advantages are being eroded away slowly by a free PSN...dgsag

this is more or less the case. hopefully, microsoft will turn it around with the 720 and actually have reliable hardware to boot this time as well.

In my opinion when it comes to who did what for gaming, it's all about Sega, Microsoft, and Valve.

This thread is FULL of gross, yet halarious ignorance

Lets put this perspective

Atari - Help create and made console gaimg what it is today, lots of respect deserved

Nintendo- Brought gaming back, and pushed it to new heights, with some of the most amazing first party software

Sega - thier Genesis syetm was the first system that had games that were geared toward mature players, way before sony

Sony - really created the first sucessful CD based game system.

Microsoft - made the first and best online experience for consoles, also they made the operating system for the dreamcast, you better believe thay had a hand in thier online system to

Nintendo, who had the first analog controller, and atari, who basically invented this stuff, they have done the most for gaming, others have made contributions, but none like those two

I think the Twin Analog idea was very, very inventive. It came out during the PSOne days, and it's still being used by all three companies today. That is pretty awesome.

Since I'm almost exclusively a handheld gamer, MS has really done diddly for me.. but I can appreciate that they pretty much revolutionized online gaming for consoles.
