they need to do a better job of it if they intend on getting all or even most they aren't doing a very good job and they need to update the bc abbilities of the ps3, ps1 games look total trash on the ps3 on high def tvs in 1080p.

i dont think it really costs sony anything. the publisher just asks if they can put the game up there and sony either give it the green light or dont. any changes to the code needed to get the game running (im not sure if there is even any) would be taken care of by the publisher/dev. there might be a bit of server costs i suppose bandwidth to send the game....bit of space on a HDD somewhere....but its insignificant and would be covered by the price of the game anyway.

they might as well since there's no PS2 B/C, it's easy money, and everybody else is re-releasing retro titles

personally i've bought 4 of 'em but nothing since last summer, if they release Xenogears i'd buy that again since i no longer have my copy, and i'm thinking of getting FF9 since i never got a chance to play past the first disc of that game

What he said. In alol honesty, they probably make more money off of putting games like FF7 on PSN than they lose licensing it.

Wasting? How much resources do you think SONY is spending on PS1 cIassics?

I find it hard to believe that doing this has any affect on pursuing other tasks. So the real question is, why not?

without getting in trouble by giving specifics I play quite a few older games with better filters then what the ps3 offers, They could easily employ some of the cell's processing power to ad better filters, AA and such to alot of the ps1 games but they don't.

FF7, FF8 both look horribly pixelated when running at full upscale and even with smoothing on my 32 inch 1080p samsung if they were to have the cell take some AA and filtering it would look far better.

I think that putting ps1 classics on the psn is a good idea but there is no need for them to put titles that were not well recieved back in the playstation era.

Actually, they can. For some reason PS3 removed the smooth texture option that was available on the PS2. Also, I don't understand how certain programs can play PSone games at ultra high resolutions, yet Sony can't do the same thing for PS3.

It's only wasting if they're investing a lot of resources and it's not paying out. First, it takes little to no money/manpower to port a game. Second, I think they're selling pretty well.

the PS1 games that are on the PSN haven't been in print for a very very long time....any copy left of these games are used copies and they'll get no more money from these games

so, why not put them back up for sale and actually make money off of them?

it's super expensive getting an actual copy of FFVII...so what do you do? just port it digitally and make $10 easy because most people would rather get it off of there than hunt one down (unless you collect...which if so, you probably already have one...or five, lol)

No. Putting those games up is a great idea. Some of them still have lots of demand, and once the're up, they cost absolutely nothing to make or distribute. It's pure proffit.

If anything, Sony are not exploiting it enough. I can't think of anybody who would want to buy Creatures or Hardcore 4x4. At least they're starting to get games on the store that people actually care about such as Final Fantasy, Vagrant Story and Syphon Filter, but more please.

All I know is they need a slighty better selection. Some of those games arent worth a dime in my eyes, and they are straight ports, but Im thankful they are there. I have nabbed a few in a heartbeat back in the day. I wouldnt mind them actually taking the time to think about their game plan a little more and ask the community more though. After all, we are the same ones buying it.

The only problem I see here is that some games, like Street Fighter Alpha 2, for example, should be original arcade versions, instead of those crappy PS1 ports that are on PSN right now.

I disagree alot of ps1 games looked amazing when they first came out, But all the flaws in them from back then show through easily on high def tvs, If they would employ better filters, additional AA and a few other things they could mask up a little of the flaws evident by higher resolutions.

I've done quite a few tests on my ps2 running through component using high disc read speed and texture smoothing, then my ps3 running with full scale upscaling, double, normal, lower resolutions, component, hdmi.
the only way I can get a game to look half way decent like it does on my ps2 is to run the ps3 at 408p, set it to normal, use component cables.

Xbox makes Live. Playstation follows by making Network. Xbox makes Xbox Originals on Live. Playstation follows by making Playstation Classics on Network. As long as Sony keeps using Microsoft as their test dummy for what people like online, theyll remain a year - two years behind on their service. But then again, a hardware company like Sony will never make as good as an online service as Microsoft

oh boy, williambaker and shadow here...

Well at least baker is actually contributing something relevant to this topic. I do wish that they offered a little bit of something more to make PSOne classics look better other than the smoothing option.

Also, just understand that it barely costs Sony anything to put these PS1 games in. They are definitely making a very strong profit margin off games like FFVII, FFVIII and soon to be FFIX.

That would be absolutely awesome SE or another company like Eidos did a God of War I/II style port of FFX with high-res graphics, 60 fps, and trophy support.

Funny thing about that is that Sony has had PSOne Classics since 2006, the 360 has had Xbox originals since 2007. Also both the PS2 and Xbox launched with the intention to add multiplayer gaming online. Since your fanboy is showing so much I'm going to assume you have never actually used the Playstation Network or any of its features. Despite Xbox Live being superior in a few areas and PSN in others, both are excellent online services.

On topic:

I think PSOne classics are being handled well for the most part, however I would like to see more high quality PSOne games released. Sony made an excellent decision by making PSOne games available for download for those who long to play many classic games.

I love some of the classics. All they need to do now is start porting them over at a faster rate (but still at high quality) and start on the PS2 collection! Hell yes!

wow lmfao. they're games from 2 generations ago which were standard def. what do you expect them to look like? to answer the question they only need to release the rare hard to find games, or the classics since ever ps3 is ps1 compatible.

Xenogears has been on PSN for a while in Japan; I wouldn't hold my breath for a US PSN release, because the game didn't sell very well the first time around in the US. That said, I think that it's fine that Sony wants to sell PS1 games on the PSN. It's easy money for Sony, it expands the legs of the some excellent titles, and it (somewhat) manages to keep the second-hand prices in check.

No one is making you buy them, and for the lame games, someone is bound to have some nostalgic appeal to it, so the dev might make a tiny bit of profit regardless. For the service in general, getting old RPGs for $10 that are in most places like $100+ is really sweet actually, especially with being able to take them on the go.

well, so far all N64 and Dreamcast classics on Xbox live were upped to 720p and in Perfect Dark's case upped to 1080p Don't see why they don't do that Even the Xbox live version of symphony of the night runs at 720p

they need to do a better job of it if they intend on getting all or even most they aren't doing a very good job and they need to update the bc abbilities of the ps3, ps1 games look total trash on the ps3 on high def tvs in 1080p.

Can't really do much about that, I don't think at least.

well, so far all N64 and Dreamcast classics on Xbox live were upped to 720p and in Perfect Dark's case upped to 1080p Don't see why they don't do that Even the Xbox live version of symphony of the night runs at 720p

The reason they do that for xbox is because they are going to have to rework te code to run on the 360 anyway, so why not just up the resolution. With PS1 games, it's a pure port, and to be honest, it seems like a waste of time.

Im hoping they put Xenogears and Treasures of the Deep on the PSN soon. Please do it Sony and you will make me a very happy guy!!!:D

A man can dream huh?:P I would buy Xenogears in a heartbeat if it was released on the US PSN. I love how Sony releases PSOne classics. That was one of my favorite gens. Soul Reaver,Tomb Raider,etc... My PSP Go has more then 5 PS classics on it. I dont understand why some people think it's a bad idea for Sony to focus on the classics. It cant be hurting them too much cost wise to release these games.

Some games, yeah, doesn't make sense at all, especially if it wasn't a big seller.
