I am not talking about being sexist or anything but I have some friends that don't enjoy playing games in which the main character you are controlling is a female. Like when PDZ came out at launch me and my friends were going to pick it up but most of them didn't because the main character was a girl. I don't really mind but they told me that they don't feel as immersed in the game if they are not playing as a male. Also with Bayonetta my friend liked the gameplay (demo) but will not get it becuase you play as a female.

So are my friends just crazy or are more people like this?

I used to be pretty much against using a character that had a vagina but Ive matured since then.

I now want to buy FF XIII, dont find playing Tomb Raider wierd and dont mind when U2s online randomly selects Chloe as my character :)

not really..I like the ability to choose gender in games... in some RPGs like the first 2 fallouts..if you rolled a female char, you were able to use your sexuality to persuade/influence NPCs.

I prefer to play as a girl but I'm not about to not play a game merely because a guy is the protagonist. I understand what people say about immersion, I think if you absolutely refuse to play a good game merely because of the protagonist's gender, you've got some sexism going on right there.

Nahh. I really don't mind. Sometimes, I'll even choose a female character over a male.

Sort of depends on how the character was written, but no. I usually play at least two play-throughs with different genders each time in an RPG. The only time I actually shy away from using a chick is if I make her and she turns out to be a real fug.

If I can be a badass chick, all the better. In Mass Effect, though, Jennifer Hale makes femShep sound more commanding and soldier-y than maleShep xP

I prefer playing as a guy. I don't recall any games I have played recently where I play as a female protagonist the whole time (Samus is a girl, but she doesn't look like one).

I don't like playing as a female. There hasn't been a game yet that didn't involve half naked females to appeal to a male audience. I don't want to look at exposed skin as I'm playing because that kind of appeal isn't what makes me enjoy a game.

Of course I haven't played a "mandatory female main character" yet so who knows what say, FF 13 will be like. FF 6 doesn't count because Terra (who is awesome) isn't the only character you play as and I haven't played a recent gen game involving a female main character that isn't a typical female fatal.

Oh yeah that's true, but I don't like shooters that much or the gameplay of Metroid Prime. Or Super Metroid for that matter, which is ok but just not to my taste. I'm more into rpgs, action adventures, platformers, and some puzzles.

you could give beyond good and evil a spin,The female Protagonist isnt scantily clad,or some fan-service to sex-starved gamers, she's actually a very human-like character..it's a very solid action-adventure game..Ubi-soft really needs to bring out the sequel already.

Zoey and April Ryan from the longest Journey Series are also very human type characters..opposed to the big-breasted bimbos in most games nowadays.

I know people that don't like to play as a woman, don't know why. I don't mind playing as a woman if I have to, Resident Evil 5 non-host for instance or Zoey/Rochelle. Although, usually in RPG's I like to create myself, so I create a male obviously. :P

Samus is the only female character that I've enjoyed playing. Most of the games makes the female characters look like and act like pornstars, which I find stupid. The latest good example of this is Bayonetta.

If the game is fun it shouldn't matter.

if it does the person has a deeper psychological problem then I can diagnose. Period.

Whether it be sexism or immaturity, not playing a fun game based on the characters sex is silly.

People put far to much stock in nonsense like this.

Female leads are good when portrayed well i spose, alot of poeple are going nannersover cleavage and so on, it doesnt bother me much because that sort of thing has its place.

heavenly sword still remains my fave hack n skash this gen, i have nothing but respect for samus and faith from mirror's edge is amazing. BUT I dont like bayonetta....i still cant put my finger on it, but i just cant get into this character. oh and luightning seems pretty meh as well.

TC, your friends are either casual gamers or just immature as the only people who would have an issue with the gender are most likely young or they haven't played enough games to realize that women can be main characters.

Btw, on a side note: Lightning looks like a boss and looks sexy

Don't have a problem has long as they don't try to be *sexy* while I'm playing. Bayonetta is the only game ever in my life that I won't be buying because of the protagonist.

During single playing games I don't mind, but I don't play women during multiplayer games, especially mmo's, because you'll always get that random poor loser who tries to hit on you.
