So going forward means having a game system that focuses more on TV and sports then games? This is the way I see it, Xbox brand going foward, playstation brand almost standing still.

MS is pulling numbers out of their butts here. Only 5% of console users play old games on their newer consoles? That MAY be true if you are excluding all the people who digitally downloaded old games off the Nintendo Shop...which offers not just NES, SNES, N64 and now GC games, but old SEGA and NeoGeo games as well. It may also be true if you ignore all the people who downloaded old games off the PS store. Or all the people who are clearly buying HD remakes or "collection" bundles of old games.
Clearly, there are plenty of people who want to be able to play last gen (or older) games. To say it is only %5 is total BS and that number can only be even remotely true if you ignore all the ways people are playing old games these days. Because with the PS3 taking out BC (and the Wii U to some extent), customers don't have much choice. They either rebuy the games they like when re-released as HD remakes or collections (which MS likely considers "new" and therefore doesn't count) or they let some of their old favorites collet dust in the basement.
I get why BC isn't being impletented these days. MS is right, it is almost impossible to keep supporting old hardware choices in new consoles. Especially since in the past, consoles all had "unique" hardware design choices, often to the dismay of developers. But to say that because customers are now having to rebuy all those old games if they want to play them, that somehow means nobody wants BC is just asinine.
[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"][QUOTE="LustForSoul"]He's just telling the truth. I doubt there's MS engineers in here, it's probably too much work and not worth it. The 360 did have BC and I don't know anyone who uses it. MFDOOM1983
The 360 had very limited and horribly flawed BC. That's probably why no one used it except when there was no other choice.
It's fine if BC is impracticable, and I don't doubt that it is, but for MS to act like it's unreasonable to even expect BC is shitty.
I actually prefer 360's emulated BC over native bc found in the wii-u. Xbox games operated at a higher resolution(720p) and had AA applied to them on 360. Wii games on wii-u run at 480p and even though it's native it still messes up surround sound for many games. Wii games look like crap on HD sets and because of that dolphin(pc) will remain my go to platform, when I want to revisit wii games. But emulated Xbox games often had graphical glitches and stuff. I played Halo 2 on the 360 and it was a mess, artifacting everywhere.
Dolphin is good in concept, but certain games can just be a nightmare to run. Xenoblade for instance. I got a custom version of Dolphin someone made specifically for Xenoblade and it still doesn't run quite right (though it wasn't even playable on vanilla Dolphin).
Not being BC is not a huge deal. But the way Mattrick answered was plain lulz worthy. Now please someone help me with this one. Is it really the One architecture so different from the 360 that they couldn't make it BC? Like the PS4? Or they just said: **** it, don't want it so #dealwithit?Giancar
As someone who currently has my PS3, Wii and Wii U all hooked up to my TV, with my SNES and PS2 collecting dust in my basement (along with my favorite games of all time)...not being BC is a huge deal. I can't keeping all consoles hooked up and am not about to start shuffling any time I want to play a game. I also refuse to keep rebuying my favorite games every gen as they are "re-released" because console makers want to rip me off...I mean "are unable to focus on BC". Meanwhile, what happens if my launch PS2 doesn't even work anymore? Should I just throw all those games out and rebuy them or download them? Especially since if I get the PS4, that likely won't even work either?
I don't care about backwards compatibility, I care about the hundreds of dollars worth of f***ing XBLA games I purchased being useless if the HDD in my 360 dies.
How are people not grasping that concept or pissed off about it? Retail games I have a hard copy so I don't give a shit, downloadable games I do care about.

I agree completely! People need to understand that consoles break and having to keep all of these hardware just to play old games is very annoying.
anyone else thinks that the PR department of companies instead of making them look good which is their whole purpose became a joke with their bs statements?
[QUOTE="BrunoBRS"][QUOTE="Ly_the_Fairy"]going by what MS has shown us in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, i wouldn't hold my breath. Well they do have 15 exclusives in the first year. That sounds at least interesting. They set up some studios in the past years that haven't made anything yet (no not even Kinect games). So E3 could have some surprises. promising a bunch of exclusives within the first year didn't help nintendo.Microsoft's event also took place 3 weeks prior to E3; not 4 months.
You shouldn't write them off yet.

I think Mr. Mattrick is the only one who is backwards if he expects people to buy his console when he trashes those of us who enjoy backwards compatibility.
I still played Dark Alliance 2 with my cousin on the 360 up until Daggerdale came out. What is this guy smoking?

He is talking about the system not the player, saying that if you are adding BC into a console you are backwards. I do not agree with him, but he is not acting the consumer, he is talking from a business perspective.Â
From the business standpoint, it should be better for MS to keep BC out of the Xbox One and offer a further miniturized version of the 360 to sell seperately. Â It keeps the extra cost of BC out of the new console so consumers who already have 360's or don't care about 360 games don't have to pay for it. Â Consumers looking for a cheap console can go with the 360 if they want it. Â It makes complete perfect sense to me, and I couldn't be irrate at all over such a decision. Â The addition of 500 million transistors for the XCGPU + software and hardware integration into the Xbox One would be an expensive endeavor. Â
You can buy another 360 HD and download your games again.I don't care about backwards compatibility, I care about the hundreds of dollars worth of f***ing XBLA games I purchased being useless if the HDD in my 360 dies.

Well, the statement is true for me. I'd rather wait until the next system has a decent library before shelling out the money for it, and until that time comes, I stick with what I have. I've hardly used the feature on any system that included it. Roughly 3 times or less to be exact(per system). Of course, I'm not everybody, but I don't see much point in it either.

Looks like the third console curse really is real.
Rocker6
This... the idiocy displayed by MS in only a single day is making my head hurt!
That is why MS should have name it Xbox 4 it might have fooled the curse in thinking it was the fourth Xbox.

Devs can port over old Xbox games to the Xbox One if they wanted too. Sinced the Xbox from 2001 used an X86 CPU.

It definitely is, but the response given by Don is unbelievably arrogant. It's like Sony circa 2006.
It's not like they were #1 or anything last gen. Maybe #2 right now but PS3 is catching to them fast.

Wrong, it was also PowerPC. PS4 and X1 are the first systems to switch to x86.EDIT: Never mind, you're right. I never knew that.

Xbox used a Pentium III Coppermine derived processor in order to homogenize the DirectX ecosystem between PC and the Xbox.I liked the ability to play original xbox games on the 360, though I'll admit, I probably used it only once or twice. I really don't see how making you pay to play your games again is any better. Regardless of whether you buy an X1 or a ps4, you are going to want to hold on to your 360/ps3 to play your games.Overlord93
[QUOTE="RR360DD"]The Xbox mini rumour working with the new Xbox to offer BC may come true. Theres exciting Xbox 360 news around the corner apparently :Phexashadow13This would suggest not. He just said developing backwards compatibility technologies is a waste of time and money.translation - yopu stupid f#cking consumers don't have the right to demand what we supply, we supply only what we want to force upon you and then tell you that you must accept it. if you don't do as we say, then you're really backwards.
Backwards Compatible feature is blown WAAAAY out of proportion...
Having a crappy hardware and 5 yr old tech is even more worse... like the Wii:U.
After all, am sure Xbox One games will be great enough to AVOID playing in the PAST.
Call it progress, evolving, developing... whatever.. all eyes will be on whats coming.
TV, sports, Call of Duty.
That is all lems care about.

My TV box and PC are better at all of that, so what's left for Lems? Nothing.
[QUOTE="charizard1605"][QUOTE="ShadowDeathX"] PC + Wii U = Win for the next two years. Wait until the PS4 gets some games to add it.ShadowDeathXGames are not looking to be a problem with PS4 :P Even how good the PS4 looks now, it will still get it's dry game period for at least until Holiday 2014. Wii U will be out of it's dry period come September and games will be released for it in a more even flow. :) Can't WAIT!
The PS4 will have more quality games at launch then the Wii U will have in its entire first year. Â I have a wii U and i got it for Nintendo exlcuisves but the PS4 will be a superior console in every coneceviable way, The Xbox one on the other hand is a cable box that plays games.Â

PS4 will have better games at launch than another console's first year? That's too much faith, especially when Wii-U has a killer holiday lineup and all PS4 has is...Knack.

3rd party games do exist. And nothing is concrete about the WiiU holiday killer lineup. We'll be sure about all this in 3 weeks though. Please Log In to post.
