well said...In my opinion, a cheap game is a game that breaks its own rules; one in which the game design takes the control of the challenge away from you (bad camera, obscuring your vision, bad controls); one that gives you no tools to rise to the challenge; or otherwise hinders you from accomplishing what must be acomplished.
Demon's Souls is, generally, not cheap. The combat system is methodical but consistent. There are no missing animations, so you cannot say that an enemy attacked you in a way you could not prepare for. The collision detection, aside from being able to slice and be sliced through prison bars in 3-1, is nigh on perfect. The enemies will surprise you, each type of enemy possess the same combat skills. Yes, it is a surprise when you step on a plate and suddenly arrows shoot down the hall. But if you take a moment and think, you will succeed. Why is there a pressure plate there? Not just for the fun of it, chances are. And you know that player note you ignored? I bet it might have told you something about that!
Activate every blood stain. Read every note. Remember what you have learned. Pay attention to player ghosts. Leave notes for others. Drop your soul mark and join someone else so you can get a lay of the land before conquering it on your own. If you are in human form, invite someone to join you so you can stay fully human as long as possible. These are some of the many tools that Demon's Souls offers to you.
There are a few moments that really are cheap. A ragdoll once knocked me off a suspended walkway in 3-2. The targeting is weird, and I fell to my doom once because of it, and failed a few times to lock on when I needed to most, and the enemy was right in front of me. But this kind of thing does not define the Demon's Souls challenge. I admit it takes a different approach than you might be used to, but I am the first reviewer to call out a game for being cheap. And in my opinion, Demon's Souls is rarely cheap--just tough.
