Playing Mario RPG for an hour yesterday has made me realize how much the quality of the RPG genre has dropped.

Honestly, I haven't myself played more than a couple of RPGs that were made in the last 4-5 years that was even halfway decent, relatively speaking of course.

Review scores reflect this, but I read the comments on the bottom of the IGN reviews and see that several people "are going to buy it anyway, because the reviewer MUST be wrong."

No, no, Just no. Even if the reviewer was being a little harsh, the game is a whole lot lower quality than what it could have been, but when it comes to something like an RPG that takes thousands of dollars to produce, if these developers can cut corners somewhere (Like the story, or adjusting the camera) and still sell it, then they will.

It's your duty as a gamer not to give these guys any money. If you MUST play the game, then buy it used, to ensure that they don't get a single cent from you.

The RPG genre needs to rise again!

Most of the good DS RPGs are remakes of RPGs I've played years ago.

You know.. RPG standards have been raised since the release of Paper Mario... so mediocre ratings still indicate that it is a better game : /

It's certainly not bad either.

Lost Odyssey got similar score and by far it's my favorite JRPG of this generation.

Screw that. I prefer thinking for myself.

It's called cognitive dissonance. Instead of blaming themselves for buying a game like Too Human, they concinced themselves that it's good after all.

Another thing. 360 may have the most RPGs so far this gen, but most of them aren't that good. For that reason, PS2 still reigns as RPG king in my book.

Or it's you who is fooling himself into thinking it simply isn't possible they just like a game you do not like, because you lack the ability to process the fact that not everyone shares your particular tastes, and I say that as someone highly critical of that game. Throwing that term at those people is nothing but a smug assumption.

i played too human yesterday. I hated the demo for all the reasons the GS review mentions. But I somehow found myself having lots of fun with the full game it and spend 5 hours non stop playing. Its fun once you get it.

Now, i'm a sony fan and me saying this about too human means something (atleast to me). It could be soo easy to bash the game but I can't cause I'm having fun with it.

Mario RPG was such a hit that not only did Square not help make another but Nintendo changed the formula because it was hated by so many

Can't go wrong there

I'm pretty sure Super Mario RPG's failure in the fact they never made another one doesn't make it great

Oh yeah, it makes it fail

So he can't rent it, play it at a friend's, or buy a used copy to see if he likes it? Better than just saying that the game isn't good without even trying it out.

I imagine the reason there was never another one, is simply because Square moved onto a completely different set of hardware.
It was the last Mario game made for the SNES, and after that Gen ended, Squaresoft moved onto FFVII on the PS1.

Nintendo was probably extremely bitter over the fact Squaresoft did that, so I can see why Squaresoft didn't even involve themselves with Nintendo again, until 2002.

Most of the good DS RPGs are remakes of RPGs I've played years ago.

Not only remakes but also new ones.

THe world ends with you, dragon quest monsters, dragon quest 9, suikoden 6,...these games are all new.

So if you want good rpg's buy a DS.

It seemed a like a pretty short and shallow game with tacked on side missions just to make it longer. Worst inventory system ever. Hated the Mako. All the worlds were just barren wastelands. Hey Bioware, how about adding other cities on different planets with interactivity? The game is horribly balanced since all you need is the sniper rifle to take out everything in sight.

I agree with the balancing issues, but it's pretty popular among RPG fans, and he's stated before he doesn't want to play games too "kiddie," which mass Effect is the opposite of.

Relying too much on reviewers scores is just dumb people. Nothing wrong with 7.5, it's not mediocre by any standards. Lots of games that score even lower can be very good so start thinking for yourselves more.

I do find it amusing, that a number of people in this thead, who proclaim that scores are meaningless, are actually the same people who were only last year jumping on every single PS3 game that didn't score AAA.

It's quite ridiculous. Interesting what Lemmings and Cows do, really

review scores are generally too high atm.

All big games should at least achieve an 8.

Also what else are you supposed to use to decide weather to buy a game or not? Its all good and well looking at screens and watching gameplay vodeos but these are usually suppied by the guys who made it.

Reviews help to decide. Most reviewers are unbiased with their scores and if you read through it all it helps. It will tell you if there are ay bugs or issues such as bad AI.

I look at multiple reviews and the aggregate is still low. I don't know about you, but I can't just be spending money on every game especially if the reviewer I've been following for years (and whom I find my opinion close to) doesn't recommend it.

I look at multiple reviews and the aggregate is still low. I don't know about you, but I can't just be spending money on every game especially if the reviewer I've been following for years (and whom I find my opinion close to) doesn't recommend it.SolidGame_basic

Of course. I also consider reviews about games I'm not sure of. But, for example, I'm sure that most people that were interested/expecting/hyping Too Human (or Haze, etc) actually bought them, and I bet a lot of them actually enjoy them, despite the reviews.

My point was that reviews are (and never will be) absolute, so if somebody has been waiting for IU (like me), he will get it even if it get a low score.

If you want good rpg's this gen buy a DS.

(and maybe a few years later a ps3)

Most of the good DS RPGs are remakes of RPGs I've played years ago.

true.,...thats why i dont think ds has more games then a psp...because all of ds games are complete remakes
