mtsc_Q you make some good threads and then theres this...
And why do your topics usually revolve around the 360?Burnsmiesta
It's a coincedence that TH and IU are on the 360 and have bad reviews. If they were on the PS3 then I'd still make this thread.
As for the PS3, there's just nothing to complain about. I guess I could complain about the fact that they don't have anything to complain about...
I mean seriously, there's just no content to complain about, it's not so much that there's a lack of flaws.
And that's unfair to say, I have plenty of gripes about the Wii.
You should buy games if you like them no matter what the review score is.
For example, look at Legend of Dragoon. It got a 6 (I think) on GS but many regard it was one of the best RPGs ever.
Yeah because people aren't allowed to enjoy games if they score low on the interwebz ????angelkimneThis and people complaining about games that havn't played yet. It makes me sick.
I can't trust the media on JRPG reviews when they do stuff like giving Eternal sonata and 8.5 then Lost odessy (wich is twice the game ES is) a 7.5.
Game Informer review for Infinite Undiscovery...

I actually got about halfway through that game, and I'd probably give it a 6 myself.
Although the whole dragoon transformation thing was pretty cool.

I'm safe. Too Human looks like garbage and Infinite Undiscovery seems meh.
Well we all have our own opinions I guess. I'm a huge RPG fan and I personally think that the genre's quality has remained pretty constant throughout history, with some series getting DRASTICALLY better over the years (such as Final Fantasy... just can't see why people call 4 and 6 the best in the series, personally think they're the worst in the series out of the ones I've played), and some GREAT series being introduced recently (Mass Effect), as well as already established series continuing to please fans (Tales).
IMO it's a great time to be an RPG fan and I love where the genre is heading.

Playing Mario RPG for an hour yesterday has made me realize how much the quality of the RPG genre has dropped.
Honestly, I haven't myself played more than a couple of RPGs that were made in the last 4-5 years that was even halfway decent, relatively speaking of course.
Review scores reflect this, but I read the comments on the bottom of the IGN reviews and see that several people "are going to buy it anyway, because the reviewer MUST be wrong."
No, no, Just no. Even if the reviewer was being a little harsh, the game is a whole lot lower quality than what it could have been, but when it comes to something like an RPG that takes thousands of dollars to produce, if these developers can cut corners somewhere (Like the story, or adjusting the camera) and still sell it, then they will.
It's your duty as a gamer not to give these guys any money. If you MUST play the game, then buy it used, to ensure that they don't get a single cent from you.The RPG genre needs to rise again!

You shouldn't pay for crap. That's how crap keeps getting produced.
7.5 is not crap.
b) Even a game is rated at 5.0, if you enjoy it, how is it crap? You made an informed decision based on your own personal tastes and got entertainment out of it.
What is it with you and wanting to outlaw anything you dont like? Some people pay for xbox live; you condemn them for doing so, regardless of whether they think it's worth every penny. Some people think Too Human is a great game - they'r wrong. Some people think 7.5 is a perfectly good score, you dont, it's crap they shouldnt buy.
Let people play what they enjoy. :?

I dunno, I'm not sure what I'd gain from controlling your every action, although that would save me the trip to the refridgerator for water if I did.
Seriously now, The only reason why crappy video games keep getting produced is because people keep proving they'll buy them.
Things could be much better if we didn't support things that are less than the best.
And there's a lot of the best out there, plenty to occupy any decent hard-working person's freetime with.

Again, games with limited widespread appeal and games scoring 7.5 are not crappy. Crappy is a movie cash-in, or a rehashed sequel.
Too Human is flawed, very much so, but it was developed with the best intentions and was certainly not intended to be crap. Heck Silicon Knights stand by it even now, saying they wouldnt change a thing, and there are people out there loving it. Look no further than Too Human.net

I agree with this, but sadly a lot of people take reviewers seriously and will not buy or play a game based on the review without even trying out on a game if they would like it. Plus, I waited for IU for so long . Now that's it's a day away, I'm not gonna change my mind because of a review..

Maybe it's just my cynicism coming from the fact that I've wasted a lot of time on disapointing RPGs these last few years.
But that still doesn't change the fact that there might be ONE RPG in the last five years that scored over a 9 average.
Where are the grand adventures of yesteryear? Why do we keep supporting mediocrity?
And besides, Silicon Knights could have written a better story, which is something that several critics have commented on.
I played Eternal Darkness long after it's heyday when it MIGHT have been scary, but at least it had something interesting going for it in terms of having a tale to tell.

7.5 is not mediocrity. And from the sounds of things, you wouldnt even know as you dont play anything unless some reviewer gives it a 9. :?
Lost Odyssey didnt even get an 8 here and is one of the best RPGs i've ever played. It's a truly fantastic game; had it been released with "Final Fantasy" in the title it would've been slapped with a 9 and sold by the millions. Sadly though, attitudes like yours result in it being cast aside as worthless when it's in fact one of the best RPGs in years.
Silicon Knights COULD have written a better story; but the story they did write has been the same for 10 years. They didnt rush it. They didnt slap it together. They did what they thought was unique and interesting, and some critics disagreed. Heck, some movies spend years in pre production and get criticised for bad plots.
The point of this thread seems to be "be a sheep and do as they tell you". Super.

I played this game because a friend of mine had it and it looked cool. Got to about halfway through when the main storyline point was revealed and realized that putting up with the crappy AI in the battle system just wasn't worth the effort anymore.

I got this one for $30, worst $30 I've ever spent.

This one even got a 9, but I couldn't think of a more generic and boring experience.
I didn't play any video games for a few years, and when I got back, I really tried to get back into the RPG genre I loved so much, but there wasn't anything besides Xenosaga that was willing to welcome me.
And I imagine my Xenosaga binge was founded upon biased fanboyism based on experiences I had with it before my hiatus; because Xenogears is still on my top 10, although I've only played through it once about 10 years ago...
Subjectual purchasing is what I'm talking about here... some people don't even seem phased when a review of a game they're determined to buy says it's crap.
You posted three games which got less than 9's which you personally did not enjoy. Point proven. Nobody should buy games which score less than 9's any more.
Mega.
And again; your constant reference to 7.5 scoring games as "crap" doesnt make it true.

It does indeed come down to opinions, But there is a reason why these reviewers exist; to aid in the buying process. To check the review and completely ignore it without even considering the various points though is asinine. You might as well not even bother reading review sites.
As for 7.5 being crap, why settle for less?
I'll still even try something when someone reccomends it to me and lets me borrow it, and suggestions here on this forum I'll even put in extensive amounts of research into it to find out why it was something that they enjoyed. I've even bought games afterward...
But seriously, not every one of Square's games are "teh best", and the only explaination I can think of for thinking otherwise is because some people apparently haven't experienced the better fruits of today's creativity.
Who suggested not using reviews at all? :| Not me. And why settle for less? Because for some people it's not settling. I dont expect oscar-winning godliness every time i go to the movies. Sometimes i just want a cheap laugh or some entertainment for the afternoon, and i leave satisfied that i got what i wanted.
To many people, 7.5 is a perfectly acceptable score for a game which will give them a perfectly acceptable degree of value and entertainment.
I wont put "extensive amounts of research" into buying a game if i'm not sure; i'll just rent it. Or return it. And i didnt say anything to do with Square, so dont even know what you're talking about with the "maybe you just dont get the better games..." point.
Relying solely on review scores to decide what games you play is probably the biggest mistake a gamer can make. There a lot games out there that score average or maybe lower that offer something other games can't provide, but this is often different for each individual, because we all value and like different things. I do use reviews to help me make more informed buying decisions, but there a lot of games out there that i've enjoyed immensely despite getting average or worse scores such as World War 2 online and Red Orchestra, which are some of my favorite games of all time.
That being said, I played the Too Human demo and thought the combat and animations were kinda medicore, and beyond that the only thing I really liked about it was the story. When it comes to combat I think there are other rpgs that offer more, such as Mass Effect and even Hellgate London, and I think Hellgate London offers a similar looting system that could make it at least as addictive as Too Human. Anyway I'd rather wait for Diablo III because there are so many games out right now that I'd rather play.
I couldn't care less what IU scores here or anywhere else, i'm getting it no matter what.Tykain
I'm getting it too. I don't care what they scored it. If SquareEnix has anything to do with the title, I'm getting it. There way they will continue to make more JRPG for the 360. If these games don't sell that well, SquareEnix may decide not to release games like these for the Xbox 360. If they game sells well, we are likely to get more games besides Final Fantasy XIII and The Last Remnant. I've already picked up Tales of Vesperia and so far it's very enjoyable.
Alot of the complaints about Too Human make it seem like its not a bad game if you try to play it how its supposed to be played. One of my favorite games is Jedi Academy and its like that too. The combat is really whats fun, but with certain moves the game is a cake walk (lightning and grip). It takes alot of practice to get good with a saber but you can kill almost anyone pretty much instantly with those two moves.
However, if you don't rape those moves the combat is actually challenging the swordplay is insanely rewarding because the enemies don't rape those moves so you end up with some insane fights.
I think TH will be fun like that. Not $60 fun but i'll buy it when it gets down to $30.I got Blue dragon and it score 6.0 and one of my rpg and I will buy too human and infinite undiscovery which I going to buy even score low.
p.s you can't tell gamers: not to buy too human and inifinite undiscovery just because you don't them or because there are some low score for too human and infinite undiscovery
It's called cognitive dissonance. Instead of blaming themselves for buying a game like Too Human, they concinced themselves that it's good after all.
Another thing. 360 may have the most RPGs so far this gen, but most of them aren't that good. For that reason, PS2 still reigns as RPG king in my book.
SolidGame_basic
That's the same thing you use when you buy a PS3 exclusive that isn't MGS4.I think this thread shows the difference between people who blindly follow reviewers and people who are smart enough to form their own opinion...
If you want good rpg's this gen buy a DS.
(and maybe a few years later a ps3)
knight-k
you cant compare a handheld with a Console
becides all those DS RPG's have SNES - N64 Graphics, $5 budgets and no voice overs
LAME
so you cant compare some small little RPG on the DS to a HUGE Expansive FUN engaging deep RPG like Tales of Vesperia
