Trademark application sparks excitement over SEGA re-entry into console market.

SEGA Corporation has filed a new application to protect the trademark Dreamcast - sparking rumours that the Japanese publisher is planning on making a shock return to the console manufacturing market with the Dreamcast 2.

The application, sent to the United States Patent and Trademark Office's Trademark Applications and Registrations Retrieval (TARR) dated August 13 2007, relates to:

"Home video game machines; player-operated electronic controllers for electronic video game machines; video game interactive controller, namely, hand held pads, and floor pads or mats; joysticks for video games; computer cursor control devices, namely, computer mouse; flash memory cards; video game software, computer game programs".

Web chatter suggests the proof is in the detail of the application - the original Dreamcast didn't have a floor mat accessory and the Dreamcast's Visual Memory Unit (VMU) is far from the flash memory cards we know and use today - although we'd say that the VMU is pretty similar to the modern day memory cards.

The filing could, of course, simply be a further effort from SEGA to protect the Dreamcast name. According to the USPTO the original Dreamcast trademark is still active. However, the two descriptions are very different. You can see the original trademark description here.

We've contacted SEGA UK for comment. We'll update you on this potentially megaton story as we get it.

The only thing good about Sega systems are their awesome names. I don't think Sega can really fit in anymore, I mean, Sony and MS are always gonna have higher end technology and Nintendo's going the "innovation route." Portables are owned by nintendo too. Also, a lot of old sega exclusives are now multiplatform so I can't see SEGA ever coming back (as a console, that is).

I think it's just to protect the Dreamcast name. Nothing more to be had from mere speculation.

Games are still being made for it in Japan, I think that's why they're holding on to it.

That would be a huge misstake. Not only would they have to compete with Nintendo who obviously got the upper hand on them they would also have to go head on head against both Sony and Microsoft. Not to mention the fact that they make 1-2 good games a year if that. A smart decision though would be to start developing exclusivly to PC-Nintendo. Total War and the console games such as F-Zero, Sonic & Secret Rings and keep the DS development.

That's how they would earn the most money in my eyes.

Maybe MS has been working on an emulator to expand their new Xbox Originals service? Unreleased games like Propeller Arena over XBL would be a killer.

personally i think that sega will do what i´v been saying for ages, release a sega console that is compatible with ALL the sega consoles with a DVD drive included, i mean think about it, its all such old technology that manufacturing one would cost what? 40 bucks? and who knows maybe a few new games for it every now and then

I'm convinced it will happen, i've always thought they would come back into the console wars, a dreamcast 2 would be sweet, and if they are BC with saturn games would be the win, also a VC type thing like the wii for sega genesis, 32X and sega CD games as well as Game gear would be awesome. I'd welcome Sega back with open arms, they can do it dont know why there are so many against sega coming back.

I thought the Original Dramcast was amazing. The graphics were really good and it has more memory, so it had very crisp textures. But when the PS2 came out, I forgot all about my Dreamcast.... I was playing Gran Turismo 3, my first PS2 game.

If this were true (and I doubt it is), it would make sense for Sega to team up with a larger corporation, like Toshiba, for financial support.

They could easily make a cheap, gimmicky system like the Wii.

I'd definitely pick up a nextgen sega console as long as they get their games back into their glory days, learn from past mistakes & learn from the mistakes of their competitors. I just re-ordered a dreamcast after giving up on finding my old one in my garage, I'd be more than happy to have a new sega system. Especially if they jump on the DLC bandwagon. I'd kill for PS 1-4, Sonic 1-S&K, Shining force 1 & 2, altered beast, etc. etc. etc. along with good nextgen sega games.

Its cool to reminicse but Sega do not have the money to fund a new console and fight the other 3 big names in the game.

I would love to see old DC games appear on Live or PSN but as for a new console i think its best to leave that to those that can afford a dirty fight and concentrate on making great games.

Everyone is saying Sega doesn't have the money this and that, but what if the reason they've been out of the game for so long so that they could take their time, get a good prototype and refine over the years as they build funding and then release it when the time is right.

Yes please!

If Sega managed to, get their games division to actually make good console games, launch titles including a decent Sonic game, Seamen 3 and Shenmue 3 and were able to fully support it funding wise then I would totally want one.

09/09/09 indeed.

Releasing a Dreamcast 2 would be a terrible idea. Sega won't have the brand recognition of Nintendo, Sony or MS and they don't have the money to secure killer-apps. Sure they'll have some of the great franchises from the Dreamcast, but how did those work out last time? Unless Sega was to do something out of left field they wouldn't stand a chance.

Sega does not have a problem with brand recognition and they are Sega Sammy now. I just don't think anything will come of this. The only thing I can imagine is maybe they want to release something like the other guy said. A value priced console that plays all their old games. I don't know what to make of the floor mat thing.

Yeah.. Microsoft can't make no gaming console to.. Oh, wait. They've realesed two now... >_>

Maybe not a SEGA ONLY NEW CONSOLE, but why not JOIN Nintendo on the making of a new console? In 4/5years from now it would be possible..

Well the original Dreamcast was not a flop. That system was friggin awesome. I thought SEGA pulled the plug on it way to soon. I wish they had kepted it around for one more year at least. I still have my Dreamcast and many of the great games that got released for it. Still loved playing games like Crazy Taxi, Daytona USA, Sega Rally and Shenmue on that system. I'm shocked that SEGA would even try to enter the hardware market again. With 3 systems already on the market, this would be suicide. Unless they bring the system to market for $150, I can't see a Dreamcast 2 lasting very long in this tough market.
