The reality is that the Dreamcast had better games, and a unique memory card, but it was cut short due to the DVD revolution and the Ps2 had a DVD player so that's why Sega discontinued it. Sony is losing more money than Sega ever did with the Ps3, and the only reason they haven't discontinued it, is because of the frikin Ps2threegirlz
But yet Sony is still in the console race and sega isn't.

Not really. A few good titles aren't enough to even compare it to the huge variety and quality of PS2 titles.

Oh and some of those titles even got ported over to the PS2 : O Do you like ignoring that fact?

dragonfly110

which ones got ported to PS2?

I know that Sonic adventures 1&2 were ported to gamecube and JSR got a sequel on the Xbox, I never knew of anything ported to PS2 though

Code Veronica was ported to the PS2.

The fact that the PS2 is still alive and that the dreamcast died 8 years ago kind of ruins your argument.

Burning-Sludge

Of course.

The fact that they still argue about it is because they can't sleep at night knowing the PlayStation 2 is the very best console of all time.

I totally agree the DC was such an amazing console, it's honestly just sad to see it die like that. It had the potential too survive and beat the PS2.Crossel777

actually, its entirely indisputable that it did not have potential to beat the ps2. because it didnt beat the ps2. the ps2 suplexed the dc through a flaming table covered in barbed wire so hard that sega, as a company, blacked out and woke up in hell.

what was wrong with the dvd player? the fact that it was a really nice integration of a new, accessable and successful technology for a reasonable price? i dont see how that has any kind of negative edge against the ps2. it was one of its best features.

Dreamcast AND PS2 >>>>>> Gamecube/Xbox

gameofthering

I know I'm in the minority, but I disagree. I really was not a JRPG fan, so I honestly enjoyed the 1 2 punch of Halo, Halo2, Fable, Conkers Bad Fur Day, Brute Force, Morrowind, Armed and Dangerous, KotOR 1 and 2, Super Mario Sunshine, Luigis Mansion, Smash Bros, Mario Kart Double Dash, Eternal Darkness, Pikmin 1 and 2, Resident Evil 4, Legend of Zelda Wind Waker, Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, Star Fox Adventures, Star Wars Rouge Squadron 2 and 3, and probably many I'm forgetting, than the Dreamcast and PS2 library. Yes, I love God of War and Ratchet, but that's about the only playtime my PS2 got last gen besides Madden and Extermination in my younger days.

How does CV make the Dreamcast better than the PS2 when it's ON the PS2? Dreamcast ports disqualify your efforts. Anyways.

Why does it matter? At the end of the day, there remains the fact that the Dreamcast ran short on cash and fizzled out. Had Sega had enough money to support it and developed another console that competed with the PS2, Xbox, and Gamecube, that system would have mattered.

the one thing I will give to the dreamcast (and the xbox) is that they both managed to accomplish making 2 games so great that the PS2 couldnt even hope to equel them in quality. I think you know by my avi and sig what those 2 games were :P

Fastest selling =/= top. For all we know, Wii sales can plateau in a year or so. PS2 has the sales now, while Wii might have it in the future. Therefore, PS2 > PS > DS > Wii > everything else.

i have to agree with this,as a ps2 and dreamcast owner. the PS2 DVD player was one of the cheapest in the market at the time and thats what drove many(im not saying all of them) customers towards the ps2 and away from the DC. when dreamcast released they released good game after good game etc. but when ps2 released we had to wait a good while to play a game that felt next-gen to me. dreamcast was ahead of its time,built-in modem, online gaming, internet browsing, great games that looked fanastic (nfl2k,soul calibur), the virtual memory unit. the only thing Dreamcast was lacking was the DVD player. ultimately the hype of the ps2 and the built-in dvd player single handedly killed the dreamcast.

The Dreamcast AND the Saturn were in competetion with the N64 and PS1 at one point, sharing a few multiplats even, because the Dreamcast was released prematurely (as well as the Saturn ending prematurely).

And piracy, failures (32X, SEGA CD, Gamegear), the failure of the Saturn in the western market, closing the Saturn prematurely when devs were in the midst of working on projects for the Saturn, and Japan. Even the kids who starred in the Dreamcast's commercials wanted a PS2. What's more, not only was the PS2 more powerful than the Dreamcast, but the PS1's strong Japanese support continued on to the PS2. It's funny how Code Veronica is mentioned in this thread, because as soon as the PS2 was released it was ported as CVX or CV Kanzenban (the latter being a multiplat in Japan).

The Dreamcast may have had an amazing library for the brief time that it existed on the market and I would have like to have seen it last longer, but in the end I think it was SEGA's own bad decisions that shut down the Dreamcast. If they would have waited, and continued to support the Saturn they wouldn't have had two Saturns, being that the Dreamcast was the reverse of the sales pattern of the Saturn. I'd still like to see SEGA make another console and push Microsoft out of the race.

you're right because the day ps2 released(oct. 26, 2000) me and about 19 other people were in line for the ps2 for 13 hours...but there was another 20 people in a different line waiting for the release of Zelda: Majoras Mask(N64).

Power Stone 2 is the best game I have ever played to this day, standing next side a few others.

I love my Dreamcast. Wish it lasted longer. I also love my PS2. It's a hard choice. But, with the larger game selection, DVD player, and etc. the PS2 clearly was the favorite.

The Dreamcast is that one system with so much injustice done to it. Sega was violated and punished for doing good. It's unjust I tell you. God I miss Dreamcast days

It's true the DC failed, but that doesn't make it a bad console. The games were outstanding. The system had online, and its still played today. I get very nostalgic with the DC, but I still play it today (Power Stone 2). God I wish they made a Power Stone 3. Stupid Capcom.

Finally people on Gamespot have actually played Powerstone, it's a miracle.

Ps2 fanboys have no idea how good it is, and it saddens me too.

The Dreamcast was a great system for the short time it was out. The main reason that it's not better than the PS2 is that it was alive for a short time.

Dreamcast AND PS2 >>>>>> Gamecube/Xbox

Cicatraz_ESP

I'm in the majority. The DC and PS2 are great together, and the Xbox and GC were poor. It's ironic that Nintendo was never able to destroy Sega, and it was Sony who casually walked in and went Rocky Balboa on Sega's precious *ss

Here is an accurate depiction of what Sony unfortunately did to Sega:

Finally people on Gamespot have actually played Powerstone, it's a miracle.

Ps2 fanboys have no idea how good it is, and it saddens me too.

I always thought the same thing. It's a gem that no one remembers. It blew SSB out of the water for me.

The Powerstone series was really good. Not sure if there is a game on the PS2 that was like Powerstone. To get on topic, I have both consoles and I play both to this day. I found more games on the Dreamcast to be more addictive than other PS2 games, but the PS2 has a really good library of games.

1. Shadow of the Colossus

2. God of War

3. Okami (Wii ports don't count because the Dreamcast was long dead by then)

4. Persona 4

5. Twisted Metal: Black

6. Resident Evil 4

7. Dark Cloud 2

8. Tekken 5

9. Prince of Persia series

10. Katamari Damacy

I love the Dreamcast btw, maybe even more than the PS2.
