An easy comparison would be Super Mario 64 to Super Mario 64 DS, in which case, the DS is superior. Look at games like Zelda: PH and Metroid Prime Hunters, and its an easy choice.

Is it me or is there a major lack of 3D games for the ds. This make me feel that the ds graphics are inferior even though I know diffrently. No use of 3D = Worst graphics IMO. If you don't use it you can't really claim it right?

The DS is more suited for 2D games because its a handheld, but it also does 3D games extremely well. As long as the game is fun in the end, I dont care which style the developer chooses.

Sorry, but considering 3D to be superior to 2D is probably the most ignorant thing I can think of.

I don't want it to have more 3d games.

I love 2D adve´nture games like Castlevania, such games aren't suited for 3D.

Generally, 64 has better graphics. But DS does have some better looking games. Mario 64 DS and Dragon Quest look really good.

I would have to say that the DS looks better in some places than the N64 and vice versa.:)

From the screen shots I have seen, ASH looks better then all other N64 games. I like the 2D/3D style of games like New Super Mario Bros though. Lunar Knights is a good game for fans of the Boktai series and while it is not full 3D, it still looks good and plays pretty well.

One thing the DS lacks is texture filtering, so while the N64 had blurry textures, they still looked a lot better than the DS. Look at Diddy Kong Racing and compare, and Super mario 64 DS has a slight upgrade and more polygons (and is brighter) but the textures are more pixelated due to lack of texture filtering.

Phantom Hourglass looks better then those two, but it could also be artistic...

Anyway, I think the DS is better then anything that didn't use the expantion pak... for sure.

The DS has a hardware limit on the number of triangles that can be rendered per frame (about 3000-4000). This means 2 things : we won`t see games with a high poly-count ever, no matter what generation of games we are talking about and, the better part is, the fact that the DS can render about 120.000 polys per second assures a framerate of at least 30. The N64 had no such limits, but most of the games had a horrible frame rate, even top games like Goldeneye. On the other hand, I preffer the N64`s filtered textures.

For anyone who wants a comparison, Leon in RE4 had around 9,000 polygons rendering him alone, in-game.

The lack of (good) 3D games is explainable by the fact that it takes a lot of time to develop and optimise a 3d engine for the DS (due to the limitations I mentioned before). For example MPH, one of the most technically impressive DS game, took a lot of time to hit store shelves (the basic engine was done when the DS was launched, there was a demo of the game packed in, I also have it, but it was tweaked and optimised for a long time to reach the level we know it now).

Its far more impressive.

MP:H does not have nearly as much effects or enitities onscreen as PD.

And its res is sooo freaking low.

No seriously I could try PD right now and directly compare it to MP:H - I have both right next to me.

There's a reason people still play old 2d games like super metroid but not old 3d games like goldeneye.

Nintendo have always been reluctant to go into 3D with handhelds- if you look at the GBA it could do semi-3D, the DS can do 3D- its about as powerful as a N64 though does lack some effects that the N64 could do.

well that really depends on what game because there are a lot of 2d games on the DS.

Personally I think Mario 64 DS looks better than the N64 one and that Metroid looked better than most games on the N64
