it's obviously about opinion, but here in SW, gamespot scores are the law. atleast that's what it looks like.
ODST 9.0... nuff said oh and the math guy.... "YOU CAN COUNT ON MEETING ME IN THE PARKING LOT" :DI think most people agree that ODST's 9.0 is an atrocity. Killzone 3's 8.5 seems justified to me

nah sorry ODST was a great game firefight was awesome fun and the story and atomosphere and such of the single player was great.I think most people agree that ODST's 9.0 is an atrocity. Killzone 3's 8.5 seems justified to me

Lemme tell ya... being better than ODST doesn't take much effort. It was only an expansion after all.
Why doesn't ODST deserve a 9.0? The campaign was excellent & different, firefight was superb (much better than Reach), & it came with the Halo 3 multiplayer, which is my favourite multiplayer shooter on any platform, plus all the map packs. Was a pretty easy 9.0 to me.

ok now a couple poeple... LOL! Killzone is different than reach.... Killzone 3 came out early this year and took a hard hit because of it due to reviewers reserving those scores for another milked franchise like CoD.... KZ3 is original and a breath of fresh air in the first person genre!
I thought even most 360 owners agreed that ODST wasn't deserving of a 9. Personally, I'd compare KZ3 against Reach. DethSkematikI bet it was because the graphics wernt new just halo 3 with a few new textures, but who cares ODST WAS BRILLIANT!!!!
Saying you play Halo doesn't hide your obvious Cow fanboyism. A lot of people seem pretty butthurt that the halo killer flopped again.

I'll defend it as well. I really don't get the hate. I've always thought people bought into the expansion rumour before its release. For what it's worth, I'm no fanboy.

Wrong. People freaking out over ODST's 9.0 are the multiplayer-centric crowd. ODST has a quality campaign with some beautiful atmospheric touches that just hasn't been seen in Halo before. And Firefight presented an awesome new way to play cooperatively in Halo.
Trust me, it deserved a 9. Any fan of singleplayer shooters will tell you that. The fact that it is an expansion to Halo 3 and uses the same graphics engine is basically what ticked people off. But it's a gem and it goes unappreciated because kids these days only want to run forward in a straight line shooting angry looking targets instead of trying to sidestep around enemies, avoid danger and scavenge the limited supplies available to them as they find the clues to their teammates and see the story of the city unfold through the various audio logs. It was an expansion, didn't have multiplayer of its own and people over-reacted, but ODST is a case of quality over quantity.
And while an 8.5 isn't much different than a 9.0,Killzone 3's 8.5 probably stems from the fact it more than likely involves running in a straight line shooting angry targets and that's what the kids love these days. Oh and it has a new multiplayer component. The kids love that too.
I think games are judged based on how well they use the modes they have, not the quantity of modes, and ODST used each of its modesreally well.

This is what I was too lazy to type out, so I'll quote it. I can't decide if the ODST campaign is my favourite in the series, probably because it's so different from the rest.

whoa dude.... I'm gonna say this but Halo's story is B-movie quality compared to a lot of games out there. Hl2 and Deus Ex did a better job years ago and even before halo was dropped to the masses.... Oh. I thought you had played it. :P
If someone is looking for a quality campaign, ODST provides it. It has some flaws, but that's bound to happen when you make an experimental expansion. It doesn't follow the traditional Halo formula, those who search will find that the game mirrors Dante's Inferno, at first through audio logs and then through the game world itself as you fight to the end. It's an intelligent shooter, but much of it will be lost to the typical Call of Duty crowd that like explosions in the established military genre. :P

Can't cook grenades, the way you zoom out of sniper mode when you get hit, stuff like that. Keep in mind I'm not hating on the game (I'm a huge Halo fan here...heck, I gave Reach a 10 :P)...but in today's games, I found it pretty hard to go back to Halo's gameplay after the newer FPS games arrived.[QUOTE="NeonNinja"][QUOTE="BPoole96"]

I don't need to hear about Deus Ex or Half-Life. They have nothing to do with this conversation.

There are two types of Halo fans. I've thought about this, so hear me out. Halo will always be outclassed in terms of storytelling when put up against Half Life. The folks that love Halo (myself included) have loved the story since Combat Evolved. It's a fairly good, simple story and our love for it is more nostalgia driven than anything. Halo 2 and 3 were a little lacking, but the damage was already done. We like the Halo lore so completely, and that's what brings us back. Anyone else jumping into the series won't get it the way we do. And regarding the hop-ons, that's fan number 2. These guys are mostly multiplayer-driven, and it's something Halo excels at totally so that love is completely justified. Halo's multiplayer (almost sandboxy now) is still more unique compared to the COD-lites taking the multiplayer world by storm.

To each their own, naturally. I felt fine paying $60 for it as I spent well over 20 hours playing it when I first got it (campaign and Firefight of course). It personally took me 8 hours to go through the campaign but that's because I would go about exploring nooks and crannies I guess.

I agree with what you're saying. I like the Halo lore enough. It's nothing spectacular and yeah, most people that jump on midway just won't get into it the same way. Case in point, Reach's ending was really designed for those that stuck with the series from day one.
But I wasn't even talking about ODST's story as a major reason to play it. The undertones and themes are cool, but the basic story itself is, well, basic. :P

Hey, I love me some ODST. Just look at my avatar. But the segments of the campaign during the openesh ended night New Mombasa really wasn't too amazing. You just walked from point A to point B. Some times you'd fight guys, some times you didn't. When you didn't it was kinda dull. Theres nothing else to do in these segments except collect audio logs. Stealth wasn't really that important or even central to that experience. Using that silenced SMG still alerted all enemies near by to your exact location, it was really just there for looks. The campaign was fun and something of a breathe of freash air but I'd say Halo 3's and Combat Evolved's campaigns were better. While you can't judge a game purely on what modes it includes, the competition should be taken into consideration as well as the game's own predecessors. I'd say the campaign was about on par with the rest of the Halo games. Not significantly better or worse. With Multiplayer you got Halo 3's multiplayer which is something someone buying ODST likely already had. I guess it can be a good deal for those who didn't have the dlc pack in Halo 3 yet, but thats the only case in which it's of real benefit. Theres firefight, which was nice but there was no match making. So basically you got a campaign, a multiplayer from a then two year old game the consumer likely already had and a co-op survival mode without matchmaking. It was a good game but by no means superb.[QUOTE="waltefmoney"]I'm not here to read guidelines. I'm here to spread wisdom.Yeah, go read the guidelines.

So you spread wisdom about something you're not familiar with?
We judge more critically as time goes by, because our expectations as game players are constantly increasing. When we review a game, we consider it at the exact point in time at which the evaluation is taking place (generally, the week of a game's release) and compare it to what we believe to be the current standards of quality at that time.Gamespot

I'm not here to read guidelines. I'm here to spread wisdom. You can't spread wisdom if you don't know what you're talking about. The guidelines state that standards change and so what was a 9.0 before won't be a 9.0 later if it doesn't improve on itself. PDZ got a 9.0 in 2005, however standards have changed for the genre since 2005. So pointing out PDZ getting a 9.0 in comparison to KZ3's 8.5 just shows that you don't know how GS does things.
Which means you're not spreading wisdom....... Sorry. Somebody had to tell you. :P
