Cue people claiming consolization without realizing that you don't have to be Call of Duty to take down Call of Duty.

I hope EA is ready to shell out millions in advertising. Thats the only way topossibly win, Activision learned that when the Advertising for MW2 was 3 times the amount it cots to make the game.

I think CoD is more successful because of it's marketing and brand name, not necessarily the gameplay.

EA seems to be ready to put serious cash into their marketing for BF3.

All I have to say is: primary platform is PC, 64 player games, jets, prone, DX11, and dedicated servers. Tell me it's a consolized CoD clone.

If West and Zampella, can get the co-owner title from the court for Modern Warfare, then they allow EA to use that title for Battlefield 3, and then BF3 is renamed to Battlefield: Modern Warfare 3.

THEN Battlefield will outsell Call of Duty. The name and the social factor is what sells Call of Duty.

Imagine; Battlefield: Modern Warfare 3 v. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

hahaha...that would be awesome.

Exactly, you dont have to be Call of Duty to take down Call of Duty. With the right marketing tactics, a better experience and the drive to make the game great, taking down Call of Duty is possible. I think DICE has proven that the PC version wont be a dumbed down experience, it will be the full package.

Opposed to all EA's other FPS games, which were intended to sit idly by while Call of Duty ruled the FPS world? Weird that they've just now decided they would try to compete..

Though the problem is CoD now has the name built up. People understand that CoD games are going to be what they've been enjoying for quite some time and always deliever a quality experiance (unless you're on the PS3 :P).

Battlefield has an extremely strong brand name on the PC but that market won't be enough to "beat" CoD. However winning is irrelevant if they make a lot of money off of the game.

By the way. EA has Battlefield Modern Combat for console games. IW stole the Modern Combat and changed it to Modern Warfare for CoD 4 which had a bigger console focus.

Well that's not going to happen unless they're going to put $200 million into advertising it.

And even then CoD already has the brand name appeal. Battlefield has a long way to go to be as recognizable.

I wouldn't find if they had perks like COD, but they should still focus on teamplay. Taking down COD would not allow this...

You see it has scripted moments, works with a controller, and has this circle part in the menu.

Its consolized and built for consoles first.

While BF3 will certanly be the better product, it probably won't sell as much.

Tactics and teamwork are way too difficult for the average CoD player.

hundreds of millions of dollars? Wow. Call of Duty: low amount of money spent on making a good game, high amount of money spent on advertising. Battlefield 3 lots of money spent on making a great game, lots of money spent on advertising. EA is really going all out on this one, I can expect to see more Battlefield 3 commercials instead of Black Ops (thank god). I really hope Battlefield 3 outsells Modern Warfare 3, it so deserves it.

Half-Life 1 worked perfectly fine in the PS2 port and that's hailed to be one of the best PC FPSs of all time.

It should only be called Modern Combat if the gameplay is radically different. From the sounds of it, the gameplay won't be that much different from the PC version, just smaller scale.

If they mean in sales, CoD will bring down itself, but it won't be happening anytime soon, and no other shooter can affect it If they mean gameplay, well there isn't much to bring down then.

I agree with that final part. But don't you think that COD is more of a quick joy? You can get in and out in a few minutes time and feel good about it. BF has always been a game that requires some patience, some minor cooperation. I think that marketing really did kickstart the COD success. But I think that the easy in-out gameplay might have really helped to sell it to the less invested people.

I'm saying that even with a great marketing budget I don't think BF3 could be as big a success without somehow allowing for a quick easy feelgood gameplay. And that's still possible to do, while also satisfying BF fanatics, by having multiple game modes and all that.

Well that's the problem. DICE has already made moves to move BF3 even farther away from that formula than BC2.

I think they'll compensate for this with this very scripted single player. I'll admit, I love me some heavily scripted single player if it keeps a good pace with good mechanics throughout. Crysis 2, Bulletstorm, and the CoD games all did that. Medal of Honor is an example of this NOT working. The scripting was far to obvious and forced and the gunplay was really weak.

Sorry I am always editing my posts. But kind of like I say above, I think they would do better by creating a kind of quick play mode, like an 'arcade mode' where you have fast respawn, small maps and team deathmatch or so, than by creating a single player campaign.

As I have already stated in another forum, IF Consoles:No jets/choppers/parachuting=no buy. IF the PC has it then I'll get that instead. IF both don't have it, then I rent console version. I've been spoiled by BF2 (PC) when it came out years ago. BC2 on the console was a joke and a disgrace to me for containing the BF name (never played BC1). I remember thinking, "this isn't BF" this is a half-ass experience of what BF is. Taking on COD will be difficult and they will not win, however they will get a bigger recognition by many people simply becasue it will be known as the "other" military shooter.

Pretty much. I mean look at guitar hero. It was huge when it was around but little by little it started to fade and die till finally the pulg was pulled. Activision just sucks till its dry then dumps the corpse somewhere.

Rather like how every MMO is aiming to take down WoW and ultimately fail? I think EA will do well possibly better than any of their other titles but beating CoD will take more than just more sales, it'll need better support and polish... Ultimately i'd like to see polish and map designs that are not suited to akimbo run and gunners which i think is safe to say won't happen. It's gonna take sales, addictive gameplay, support, advertising, free or cheap DLC(Ok im just being stupid now) but yeah you get the idea.

I know he's wrong, but that's a lame thing to say. Why give people the impression your game was made solely to gain revenue from the masses and out of hatred of a competitor?

I hope they're able to, I'll be definitely getting the game and if their advertising can convince people to get BF3 rather than MW3 that'll be good news for me since it'll encourage my more casual friends to get BF3.

Music games are a fad though, just like the skatboarding games. Shooters will always be hugely popular. Cod may not always be the top dog but it wont ever die.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that! Hardly any game this generation provides players the versatility and smooth controls that COD does. You can prone (which adds a tactical mechanic in firefights / completing objectives), vaulting over obstacles / climbing to get to vantage points and cover (essentially platforming), and killcam which counters campers' positions (use it to your advantage, it's there for a reason!).

Don't forget the quality feedback weapons provide, and the buttery smooth controls. What players also love about COD are the myriad weapons / gadgets which open up more methods to attacking and defending positions (and killing enemies :P). Perks and Killstreaks are also gameplay related, and people love being rewarded. Speaking on rewards, the stat tracking and accolades are insane!

---

I agree that the PC version of Battlefield 3 won't be consolized, though. I just hope people don't begin to assume that their PS360 version will look / play the same as what DICE will be showing, lol.

EA / DICE have been at COD's neck for a while, now. They really seem dedicated on having that top spot. It's almost like they despise Acti / IW / Treyarch / COD, lol. They want the recognition, and they already get it form the core demographic. But let's not forget what makes COD such a success. Marketing is clearly apart of the formula, but IW invented some mechanics that are steadily becoming standards in the genre. Remember, DICE is even including killcam, lol.

---

I have no doubt that DICE will deliver with a killer (and unique) game. One that will likely be the best shooter of 2011. :) They don't have to clone COD to do so. I'm also eager to see what IW does.

CoD is like Wii Fit, casuals love it. BF isn't casual, almost impossible for BF3 to outsell MW3 even with 200million of advertising.

EA is pretty serious about this. Hope BF3 will get to be a respectable swan song at least.

That'd be nice, but wouldn't happen, and we'd have anual BF games every year instead of CoD, so not much would change.

I wouldve agreed with this 4 COD clones ago. I hope BF3 ends this rehash giant from cazualizing video gaming as we know it.

Never gonna happen.

People have been making better FPS titles than Call of Duty for years, and none of them have sold better.
