[QUOTE="stvee101"]I totally agree with that R2 score also,I mean how many generic shooters do I have to put up with? The PS2 was never a "shooter console" and that did just fine.samusarmada

The games successful scores does not discredit stvee's statement that the game is generic, and certainly does not dim his argument that it is for this very reason that he does not want to buy it.

I think it's more about him getting tired of the FPS genre than the game being generic.

Yes. On reflection I would agree. Resistance is only really "generic" in terms of its set-out; other than that it has its own sty!e and feel.

[QUOTE="exiledsnake"]I don't know how people can defend edge. Read the review? Going by the scores, they are very inconsistant. An example would be GeoW2 getting a 9 while GeoW got an 8 and resistance 2 getting a 6 while resistance gets a 7? I dont care how well written the review is, scores need to be comparable to each other. LBP gets a 10 and COD WaW gets a 6, does that mean its almost twice better?samusarmada

*sigh* R2 was marked down because it tried to go too high. It tried to add all these features such as 60 player mulitplayer and streamline the game with weapon limitations that did not improve the game and in some cases made it worse. Gears by comparison went further in terms of thrills and pulse pounding moments rather than trying to branch out its system of design to the point of pointlessness.

World at war getting a 6 means that the game is competant. LBP getting a 10 means that it is one of the greatest games ever made. That is how you judge the scores because the ratings are merely a numerical summise of the written review.

now i remember why i don't post about reviews. its all just opinions. should've just posted that i don't agree with them.

Because its contains probably some of the most well written, mature and thoughful pieces of videogames journalism that I know of.People should really give EDGE a chance before bashing.Honestly the writing and reviews are on another level to GS and IGN imo.

You're probably right.R2 is pretty generic in setting and enemies imo,but it has something about it thats all its own.

I'm just bored with FPS.Its sadly ironic that the PS2,the most sucsessful console ever, didn't have a flagship FPS to its name(unless you count KZ:P.)Yet the failure that is the PS3 has 2 coming out in the space of a few months. The mind boggles.

EDGE is harsh but they are mostly very fair. Reading their, usually well written, reviews gives a lot if insight into the scores. Also they use the full scale from 1-10 instead of the more popular 5-10. This means that a 6 from EDGE is still an very good game and shouldn't be compared to a 6 from gamespot.

RuprechtMonkey

If getting a 6/10 from EDGE is equal an 8.0 in GameSpot standards? And what about 7/10 which Animal Crossing, Fallout 3, Red Alert 3 got? 8.5 in GameSpot standards? What about 8/10 or 9/10? EDGE's and GameSpot's scores are not compatible.

No one is saying they're compatible, they're saying EDGE is wildly inconsistent.

A review score is to encapsulate the worth of a game at a glance, it's supposed to give a reader an idea of the general quality of a game relative to other scored games.

EDGE just isn't consistent, they so often give very high scores to games that don't deserve it and very low scores to games that do.

EDGE is a dinosaur in the age of digital reviews. They just aren't what they once were, the magazine isn't written as well as it once was and the quality isn't what it once was.

Or maybe that's just a trite way of expecting games to be reviewed. Review scores are, quite possibly, the dumbest thing in the history of video game journalism. I can only venture to guess that the reason they keep them is so they do not offend the illiterate gamers.

[QUOTE="MarloStanfield"]Edge uses the full scale. So all those games apart from mirrors edge are above averagethom_noa
Unfortunately, many North Americans fails to see this and impose their American rating standards. Gamerankings.com is guilty as well. EDGE is a British magazine, not an American magazine. It uses a different standard of rating games than American publications. The dismissal of EDGE's scores shows the ignorance of those who do so, eps. since most of them never read the written reviews.

Well said... It's getting tiresome to see people dismiss EDGE's reviews because they didn't give this or that person's favorite game a 9 or higher.

I think Edge is alright. Sure they have their missteps sometimes (like everyone else), but most of the time they tell it like it is and don't give in to hype.

Since most gaming publications are intended for young people, it is not surprising as most have short attention spans and a number or letter score catches their attention. Perhaps it would not be marketable for a publication to have written reviews without scores, or even in-depth written reviews that are pages long. Finally for everyone who is bashing EDGE because of its reviews, stop it. You are making yourselves look foolish by bashing something that you have never read nor understand. Read the reviews, not the score. EDGE's recent reviews will be available on its web site in a few weeks from now.

i'm an avid reader of edge magazine, there are times where the reviewer just babbles nonsense...its usually the newer reviewers that bring a stronger sense of bias with them...edge magazine isn't as respected as it once was...

Edge actually tried not using scores for one issue but everyone complained. You cant have it both ways folks

adding a rating to games might seem stupid but the do it for movies and music as well. It's jsut as stupid there

Unlike most review sites they actually use a 1-10 scale and are somewhat critical.

Fallout 3 - 7 Call of Duty: World at War - 6 Resistance 2 - 6 Mirror's Edge - 5

Why look at anything else? The word garbage comes to mind. Edge´s reviews shouldn´t be posted again. Never again.

Solid_Snake_7

Because they dont buy into the hype and toss 8s and 9s at mediocre games like everywhere else does? :? How many people are starting to say that Fallout 3 is over-rated already? How many people saying MGS4 and GTAIV are not worthy of 10s?

No, i think Resistance struggles as a game because it is indeed very generic. The setting, the art st yle the story, the main character. They're all very cookie-cutter and done-before, so even though the gameplay is good, the game can feel stale to people who've played a lot of shooters.

Wow even if there writing is good they should put more effort into giving their games Logical scores. It's just unrealistic to tell people that they can go out and buy another generic Tombraider and get a better game than Fallout 3 or R2.

Another example of why I have always thought EDGE was a joke. Many hold them in such high regard simply because they are harsh. As if that gives them some sort of 'hardcore' badge of credibility or something. Even still, their readers proclaim, "you just do not understand how their system works." Well, it is a 1-10 scale they are using, so how different can it possibly be? More importantly, why should they try to make it so different?

One can be critical and fair at the same time. However, just blatantly making it a point of being ridiculously over critical merely for the sake of trying to stand apart from the status quo is only a controversial act of trying to garner attention in my view. Too bad for all of the uniformed gamers who happen to glance upon their reviews and are scared away from what are in reality quality titles.

What a joke of a review system. Makes me like Gamespot more and more after seeing some of the monthly EDGE reviews. No, I do not always agree with Gamespot, they have dropped the ball on more than a few occasions in my opinion. However, I find that about 7 out of 10 times, I usually do agree, or at least come close. They can be harsh, but fair as well.

There has to be a point of reconciling criticism and fairness in order to come to a balanced score. That is why I feel more and more that GS is just about as good as you are going to get when dealing with any of the big reviewers out there....give or take a point or two of course. When compared to the likes of EDGE though, you learn to appreciate how accurate of a portrayal they actually give of a game most of the time.

so true ninja, i think to understand edge reviews you have to actually read their reviews and have some background about the magazine outlook on games, then people would not get so confused.
