wow, that's low. weird, it got an 8 from EGM and a 9 from nintendo power. we'll see how gamespot rates it.shoeman12

I would put more stock in the 8 from EGM. People forget how harsh Edge is, a 6 from them is roughly a 7-8 anywhere else. So they are right in line.

It looks like Edge either thinks of 6 as good or just has no idea what they are talking about. Other reveiws average at a high 8 or low 9, so it just seems idiotic. But hey, let them have their opinions.CraigJK

This is a stupid argument you're posing. Basically, you're saying that because everybody raves about something, if somebody gives that said thing a mediocre score, their opinion is invalid.

I actually think the Edge review makes sense. These games are not getting any fresher. Ratchet & Clank fanboys cried when the most recent Ratchet & Clank game got a 7.5, but that seems pretty accurate (don't get me wrong, I own and love the game) considering that Insomniac has made the same damn game about 5 times.

The rehashing has got to stop and Nintendo is no exception to that.

I'm not too pleased with EDGE reviews. While they're some of the best-written reviewsin all of gaming journalism, it seems to me they go out of their way to be different much of the time. And they've rated so many games a 7 it's ridiculous.

Edge has always been pretty unforgiving.....but I mean it's hard to fault what they're saying. I mean the game just seems like Double Dash all over again.

I'm talking about rehashed games with no evolution.

Super Mario Galaxy did something different than other Mario's.

Grand Theft Auto always evolves in some fashion.

However, games like Mario Kart, Ratchet and the Metroid Primes stay EXACTLY THE SAME.

There's nothing wrong with a continuing franchise, but there is something wrong with one that spins its wheels.

And I'd rather have new franchises personally.

Well I wouldn't say they're exactly the same, but all companies do this because they are scared to try new things.

I'd would rather have both new franchises and refines of great ideas to perfection, but then again I'm a little biased since every single one of my favorite games are sequels...

Edge usually has good and spot on reviews, and I don't see a reason why I shouldn't trust them somewhat on this one. It honestly looks like they've took a major major step back with the Mario Kart franchise with both DoubleDash and this one.

I'm really dissapointed since I would have liked for them to go back to the old feeling the game had with MK64. ( a not so childish approach, great great music, cool style, fun tracks etc)

really not that surprised, from what i've seen it looks boring and it is becoming stale, like all it's 1st party titles which is why i sold my wii. i have a terrible feeling in the not too distant future many will be saying 'remember when nintendo was good' unfortunately this is the balance nintendo will have to forever do to keep all wii owners happy, make every game as base and as user friendly as possible. you can shout all you like, but admit it, the recent games have been far too easy and are leaning towards the not so dedicated gamer

It's funny how many gamers (including myself) consider Mario Kart 64 to be the peak of the series, when it got a 6.4 here.

I'm concerned about MK Wii too, but I don't put a ton of faith in any review scores when it comes to the Mario Kart series.

The main gameplay changes are online (which was in MK DS, so I'd think it'd be no deal to assume it'd be online nowadays....but no voice chat  ) and now snaking is gone.

Wiimote steering is horned into the game because they have to make use of the Wii-mote somehow. It's already been stated in several previews that the Wii steering is not the best way to play the game.

And new characters and new tracks? What did you expect, of course they have to put in new characters or tracks, they can't just release the exact same game.

Nintendo takes the approach with this game that they take with all their series. Keep it the same and don't change much. The only difference is in previous gens atleast when they went from SNES to 64 to GC we would get a graphical upgrade from the game on the previous gen's console....now we don't even get that anymore.

MK 64 rocked....easily the best of the series for me. Used to play 4 player all day with my friends when I was younger.

Mario Kart Wii look very fun from what I seen. Yeah the graphics doesn't look that great, but as long as it fun and hopefully the online is good then it going to be a great game. And Mario Kart DS FTW indeed.:D Best Mario Kart game IMO.

Agreed. I mean, Dark Sector outscored it..

The one thing that I do appreciate about Edge, however, is that they're not afraid to use the full review scale. A 5 for them means a game is average, whereas everywhere else a 5 means the game is ****. Dark Sector outscoring it does seem a tad odd, I agree. I was expecting them to rip it apart.

You can't look at Edge's scores, you have to read the written review. Dark Sector getting a 7 and Mario Kart a 6 doesn't at all mean they think one is a better game than the other.

It's a little annoying when people just post Edge scores, because people always inevitably start complaining about how low they are without even knowing how Edge got to them.

Or because it could be more fun to play the game four player on a TV and not on a Small DS screen. I did not like Mario Kart DS and I don't care of it's an AAA game. the 64 game is the best one in the franchise IMO and started playing it the snes and have played all of them except for the Arcade game. Adding another driver was fun in DD but the courses lacked IMO.

This is the same Edge Magazine that gave Super Mario Sunshine a 6/10 score in 2002. Was there an outrage as was an outrage when Jeff Gertsmann gave it a 8.0?

By the way, is a harsh review a good review? Is it no better than a biased or soft review? How did Edge reviewed recent high-profiled games, such as Halo 3, Crysis, Devil May Cry, etc.?

good point about the racers (for the most part) staying the same. It just feels like less of an upgrade/new game because of the graphics I'd say.

I just noticed that people were saying "Why can't MK Wii be like MK64?"... which is kinda interesting considering that MK64 didn't get many exceptional reviews.

Personally, I had a blast with MK64 and MKDD, and I found MK: Super Circuit to be pretty difficult. I guess I'm just not that good of a driver.

In addition, it seems to me that some of the same people who complain that Nintendo sequels are rehashes are complaining that MK Wii is going to suck because it doesn't have traditional free-for-all balloon battles (a mode which I did enjoy) and is different in a few ways from its predecessors. I guess you can never please everyone.

That's too bad, but Dark Sector scoring higher? :?

I guess I'll wait for the other reviews before I make any decisions.

Mario Kart Wii - 6.0? Surprising to say the least, after all, the Wii has the standards equivalent to the elevation of Death Valley. (That low of standards - well... maybe that's a bit harsh but you get my point. ;))

lol sheep

Edge is the best magazine in the world and they've actually played Mario Kart on the Wii. It's not hard to se from screens why it could have problems though. It looks like derivative crap

Mario Kart DS FTW

the_h_bomb

I respect your opinion, you are one of the best posters around here, but I traded in Mario Kart DS after a while. I actually like the first Mario Kart better. And I think the one for Wii looks more like that one so I have a feeling I'll like the Wii version better than MK DS.

It's funny how many gamers (including myself) consider Mario Kart 64 to be the peak of the series, when it got a 6.4 here.

I'm concerned about MK Wii too, but I don't put a ton of faith in any review scores when it comes to the Mario Kart series.

MikeE21286

MK 64 rocked....easily the best of the series for me. Used to play 4 player all day with my friends when I was younger.

Indeed, I cant believe the low scores.

[QUOTE="Bigboi500"][QUOTE="Tragic_Kingdom7"]

The rehashing has got to stop and Nintendo is no exception to that.

Tragic_Kingdom7

What's your idea of rehashing? If it where to stop then there would be no more: Halo, GTA, Zelda, Ratchet and Clank, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, MGS, Madden, Mario, Metroid, Elder Scrolls, Half Life, etc.

And I'd rather have new franchises personally.

as a fan of MK, what would you want to see that's new in the series?
