Why is an always on always connected device a bad thing?
lhughey
Because there are parts of the world where there is no i-net !
You guys are silly or just not very imaginative. PC's are also always on and always connected. At least mine is. I never turn it off. That doesn't mean it doesnt work without the internet does it? I can still play notepad without an internet connection, right? ÂI personally want to be able to touch my controller then go right to the content/game i'm looking for with no boot up.
The difference is that consoles don't have any features outside of games that can be accessed off-line. And if the always-on model could mean DRM that shuts you out of your single-player games (or portions of them) then that could be very problematic. This is assuming that people are right to assume what MS means by always-online is that online is mandatory to get anything but the most basic functionality out of the system. MS doesn't have a good track record with this stuff (looking at GFWL) so understandably people are worried.Â
The positive interpretation is that the downtime when you turn on the 360 (where it logs into XBL) will be eliminated. Â The system could use intelligent algorithims to download demos for you whilst the system is powered-down (demos of sequels to games you have played, or recommended games. Â This could be paired with user permissions to set the range and amount of HDD space dedicated to this). Â The Kinect camera could be used to scan your face and work in sync with all your social networks to pull up a list of recommended contacts. Â If MS plays it right it could be a very powerful feature.
If done wrong it could be used as a method for enforcing draconian DRM and borking you out of your single-player game because your connection skipped a beat.
