No, it was a smart business decision to push it... it will recieve way more attention in Feb than it will in Nov. Only Halo 3 and COD4 sold well... The Orange Box may have sold better if it hadn't released b/w those two games. darthogre
You state "smart business decision" and then say it's better to have it release in Feb.
Ok, ask any retailer around the world how much business they do the last 2 months of the year. Now ask how much business they do in Feb. The problem is if you are basing it on a "smart business decision" the best stratedgy is to release it during a time where people are SPENDING money. On a time where people are trying to decide if they should buy the PS3 or not.
You underestimate the power of gifts and causual during the last two months of the year. A worthless game could sell good during that time while a great game released in Feb could fail misearably in sales.
I'm not bashing KZ2, I think it's going to be a stellar game. My problem is with the current economic climate, why would Sony chance having such a big investment like KZ2 release in a period where people are not looking to buy anything? I'm not saying they should release KZ2 and Resistance 2 at the same time or even back to back weeks.......but for the love of god if you do it, try to get them both out before the end of Nov (by Black Friday). If both the games are that great, people will buy BOTH.
A great game with no competition will fare well in the Feb/March time frame. Games have sold millions of copies in Feb/March... Lost Planet, God of War, Devil May Cry etc... It is important to have high quality games available in the holiday... but it is equally important to have a few high quality games to continue sales momentum after/before the holiday. It was a smart decision.
If I had to choose between Resistance 2 & KZ2, it would have been R2 all the way... that plus SOCOM will be releasing around the same time. And Little Big Planet as well. They have a lot of high profile titles competing for holiday dollars already. And consumers are only going to spend so much of their discretionary income on games for those few months (there's a ton of multiplats to compete with too)... so while there may be more overall spending over the holiday, there's also a lower chance that money spent will all be towards your games.
Even if KZ2 sold well during the holiday... it could do so at the risk of R2, SOCOM, or LBP not selling as well. These are all titles that will sell reasonably well any way if given the proper spacing... the extra time can only help, not hurt.
