I really hope Nintendo knows NX will benefit from strong third party support. Make a console powerful enough that it can run any third party game(including next gen)

Nintendo's first party IP wasn't able to change Wii U's result from being last. While having similar X360's unit sales pace, XBO wasn't able to rival PS4's result.

PS4 NEO with 8 core ZEN Lite + Polaris 10 (4.2-to-4.4 TFLOPS version) for $399 price may accelerated Sony's lead.

For casual gamers, if AMD's next PC APU has mobile Polaris 11 with 2.5 TFLOPS (1.4 Ghz, 14 CU), there's very little point for NX with near XBO power's 1.3 TFLOPS. PC APU has other work loads beyond gaming.

Well. Both consoles aren't as expensive as the ps4 base model in Canada. :)

Still interested in the ps4 but the price of it needs to drop significantly.

Well, the PS4 used to be cheaper than the Xbone in 2013/early 2014, and then later the PS4 was a little bit higher after the first round of price drops with the Xbone kinect removal, but then most recently as you've noted the PS4 base model went up. Just missed that cheaper window, I guess, but I feel you there. Gotta do what ya gotta do! :P

From far and wide, O Canada,

We stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee;

The reason why the price of the ps4 went up was because of the bad Canadian dollar.

What demographic is left? Apple and Android have the casuals, Sony and Microsoft have the core gamers, so that doesn't leave much for Nintendo now does it? The fact of the matter is Nintendo is losing its appeal. People are just not as interested in their games as they use to be.

Then they're screwed even if they go third-party. Will they just be dead and gone a few years from now?

They won't be screwed if they go third party. There are people who would likely buy Nintendo games, they just don't want to fork over $200 - $300 for a Nintendo console. You'd bet your ass I'd buy Mario Kart, Smash, Metroid if they could be bought for Playstation.

But would it be enough to make up for the lost revenue? It's not like 80% of their demographic is avoiding their consoles. The Nintendo we know today would not be the same as the one we would see as a third-party, since they'd need to either change their output to be more like everyone else, or severely cut down on their number of teams.

I would say a huge portion of PS4/XB1 owners would buy Nintendo games if they were available on their platforms. Nintendo's biggest hitters could possibly sell 2x what they sell on their own home consoles.

That's extremely optimistic, considering the sales of Nintendo-like games on those platforms. It could result in high sales for Mario Kart, 2D Mario, and Smash, but the rest of Nintendo's lineup isn't heavily influenced by userbase size (especially Zelda).

The odds that half of Nintendo's potential userbase is made up of graphics whores is ridiculously small.

I don't think nintendo is trying to get every single third party developer that supports the PS4 or XB1 to come develop games for the console since they are not going to focus a ton on some of the demographics these developers appeal to most likely with the NX since it's pretty much pointless to try to appeal to these demographics at this point, but even if the console is not as powerful as the other two. it should not be painful to develop games for it based off of some recent rumors about the console. As long as their vision for their console is good and not a mess like the WiiU was and they have some few appealing and great games that showcase what the console can do the console should sell fine.

I know plenty of people who would buy Nintendo games on their PS4/XB1. I'm not saying they will sell like GTA games, but definitely better than they did on the Wii U.

gotta remain positive. Hopefully Nintendo realized that a weak system that was hard to develop for was bad for them. If they didn't learn this lesson then its gonna be a tough generation for them. Stuff like this is why I do miss Yamauchi. He always made sure that the system was powerful. Even leading up to the GCN.

I highly doubt the NX will be that hard to develop for, but even if it is not that hard to develop for I don't think it will be easy for them to get the third party support the other consoles usually get.

Sorry, but not even a few guys you know sum up the apparent interest you're trying to damage control from YOUR OWN POST. The PC/PS/XBOX audience has either moved LONG PASSED Nintendo (as proven since the PlayStation) or never did at all and only want a third party Nintendo because of one word: GREED.

I can only think of one "Nintendo game" that would benefit as a multiplatform release, and that's only because it was a third party game to begin with (and in my collection, as much third party as Adam Jensen and LEGO renditions of Iron Man/Spider-Man/any of the X-Men/Deadpool), it's prequel sold MUCH more on other consoles, and it's audience hates Nintendo like Glenn Quagmire does Brian Griffin.

What the hell Nintendo go cheap again.? I don't believe this ill wait for a real confirmation, because it is so fu**ing obvious what is happening on the market now that having a better version of COD would probably get nintendo better results that trying to fine another wii gimmick.

Besides on the time they went out to make this new platform there were cheaper more powerful GPU than what MS and sony pay for the PS4 and xbox one back on 2013 even if it isn't by much.

It's not a case of hard, if it's different are the devs going to bother optimising their stuff for a different architecture?

Look how the Wii-U turned out with Xbox360 ports.

@techhog89: Do they really want to go out of business IF , i repeat , IF rumors are true ? The main reason why X1 isnt selling and losing big momentum as we speak vs PS4 is its hardware specs .. it was 3 years ago and its still is the case. And now Nintendo might release an X1 kind of machine on a price tag of what ? 399 / 350 / 300 ?

What the hell is this rumor , a turn off.

There are more reasons that specs. Relative value is one of them. NX will not be a powerhouse. Just accept that and hope that it's cheap.

This might not be as bad as people are making it seem. Nintendo doesn't need to be more powerful than PS4, it just needs good 3rd party support and a good online infrastructure. They are not going to be stealing customers from Sony anytime soon but with good 3rd party support and their already stellar first party they could still be relatively successful. If they chase after power they run the risk of having an expensive console that's out of reach of their target consumers.

The design isn't just because its modern, its just they have no way of manufacturing optical disc drives as they aren't as popular and the time and money to make one is too much. Microsoft can find someone who will do it and Sony makes their own, naturally.

I'm not sure if it was announced they won't take discs but I'm pretty sure they wont do it.

This article was kind of expected though, I'm just waiting for the announcement with the details.

EDIT: The people who are saying its portable, think about it though... Isn't a Wii U a portable system with more power? If you really wanted to you can play a game on the gamepad without a tv. The concept is kind of dumb to begin with, you end up paying for a second screen when you could just play on your 3ds instead and maybe the NX is taking that stupid concept and turning it into something a little more meaningful.

Just a thought but the gamepad wasn't very revolutionary and it wasn't interesting enough like the motion controls were.

What do you mean? Of course they could have a disk drive put in. There are plenty of companies still doing them. I don't think that's the reason. Lets wait first, then we'll find out.

Its not that that readily available from what I heard and companies are moving away from optical drives because they're old technology.

So, multiple people are popping up saying that it's Tegra. That explains it. Nintendo is trying to make a cheap secondary console.

And you think that simply being super powerful would result in PS4-like sales? Wii U had way more problems than power and third-party support.

If it's a true handheld/console hybrid I'd be totally ok it with that. It'll look great on the tv, and would be an insanely powerful handheld. Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

There is reports that the handheld will be using an Nvidia SoC which kinda gives Emily's rumor more credibility as Nvidia use ARM Cores in their SoCs.

Looks like there might not be a NX home console as we traditionally think of it. The Gamepad will be the console/handheld hybrid. It will be pretty much a bit more powerful than the Wii U, but powerful enough for Nintendo AAA games and mobile titles. Nintendo will yet again not be relying on third party AAA games. They are mainly aiming this as an inexpensive secondary console/handheld hybrid to get your Nintendo fix and not compete directly with the PS4/XB1. Probably will retail for $199.99 - $249.99 tops.

I think you are correct. It's going to be a handheld with a wireless HDMI dongle to screencast to your TV (with additional logic for frame interpolation and upscaling).

When you are at home you play on your TV like you normally would on a console - but you can walk out the door and continue to play without skipping a beat.

So, it turns out that Emily meant that the actual specs look similar to XB1 on paper, not that it performs around the level of XB1. Add this in with the fact that she said that Nvidia is involved, and this could mean anything. However, if it's an Nvidia GPU and the specs are close on paper, performance is PS4 or better.

From what you heard? Mhm, I'm on the wait and see side.

If the big N avoid optical, we'll see a Gamecube like situation with alienated 3rd parties once again, where certain games simply won't release on the NX due to space constraints...especially as this gen wears on and game files have already been hitting 50GB, not to mention the possibility of double discs games (100+ GB).

50GB standard Blu-Ray discs are already dual-layered. There are 100GB UHD Blu-Ray discs, but current consoles can't read those.

Nintendo should be listening to their fans more if this is true.

So that Super Metal Dave? youtube guy could be right ..specs look similar/same but performance is better due to newer/more modern better performing chip even though its not AMD... :P

@SolidTy:I don't think its out of this realm they decide to go with something different. The problem is Nintendo isn't someone who has relations with a company that has a need for manufacturing optical drives and at this point in time people aren't producing them in factories as often anymore as there isn't really a need for optical disc drives. By finding someone they might have to pay more and they aren't exactly like Sony or Microsoft where they just happen to have different divisions for different things, Nintendo doesn't have tendotops or tendopads or tendos2007.

Microsoft naturally has the money and resources to make one if they wanted (especially since they have a an OS division, a surface division, a research division) while Nintendo is just a game company. Sony also has optical disc drives because they need them as they produce them regularly to sell their devices. Not that people I know are great sources but I do think they have some things to say on the topic.

----------

off topic but just some thoughts

It's made me think of possibly having a hard drive you bring to gamestop and download games at gamestop digitally rather than buying a disc or a serial code there. In the next 10 years if gamestop doesn't find a way to sell games without physical discs they'll lose business so they have to find a way so maybe it is a different way of playing a game is have them become a digital retail store that allows people to receive their games even if they have horrible internet and don't want to deal with patches.

Yes, that's what I meant. My main point was the 3rd party alienation that would come if Nintendo avoids optical.

In the case of 50+ GB games, publishers have the option of going multidisc...and of course, we have yet to see what PS4 Neo and Xbone slim offer us.

@shadowchronicle: I don't think it's out of the realm of possibly either, as the N64, Gamecube, Wii, and Wii U have shown us all Nintendo beats to a different drummer. Rather I'm worried about the fallout of such an alienating decision (with regards to publishers) by the big N.

@SolidTy: Neo won't allow games to be on UHD Blu-ray because the discs must be compatible with PS4 Base. Also, there's nothing stopping cartridges from being treated like discs and not allowing saves to them, or even simply allowing installs. It's not 1996 anymore. Hell, we don't even know how big the cartridges are. 64GB as the largest option seems very likely.

So, multiple people are popping up saying that it's Tegra. That explains it. Nintendo is trying to make a cheap secondary console.

@Chozofication: Nintendo always delivers in first party for me, so im not worried. Third party on the other hand :/

I really hope Nintendo knows NX will benefit from strong third party support. Make a console powerful enough that it can run any third party game(including next gen)

Nintendo's first party wasn't able to change Wii U's result.

NX's XBO like performance may yield XBO like sales result, but the difference is NX is about 3 years late.

And you think that simply being super powerful would result in PS4-like sales? Wii U had way more problems than power and third-party support.

@kvally said:

If NX comes out in the same power range as X1/PS4, it is DOA.

What if it's $200?

With less rendering quality, TX1 has 1 TFLOPS 16 FP mode which is close enough to XBO's 1.31 TFLOPS 32bit FP.

Emily's statement

In terms of raw power, numerous sources tell me that NX is much closer to Xbox One than PlayStation 4. Even that might be stretching it a tiny bit.

If NX has XBO's raw power or greater, but less than PS4, Emily wouldn't be stating "Even that might be stretching it a tiny bit."

Repeating the same bullshit from NeoGaf (not directed at you). That unwise poster was countered by another NeoGaf poster.

I don't care how great Nintendo thinks their games are another low powered Nintendo only box ain't gonna sell shit.

Does Nintendo honestly think the Wii U would have done a lot better if it only had more 1st party titles? Sorry, but that wouldn't have changed its fate. Nintendo making games that only appeals to Nintendo fans while also having such weak hardware that third party developers don't even want to bother porting games to it is what the issue is.

@emgesp: indeed. The problem is the people they listen to and indeed the people who will disagree are the very people who are always on board with Nintendo, and the pool of people buying their consoles is less and less each gen. They need to listen to the people who wont buy their consoles too.

Not enough mature titles. Low powered and gimmicky that limits the games and makes the console massively overpriced. Massive droughts. No third party. Too many games based in the mushroom kingdom. You can make as many excuses as you want but these are valid concerns that the stay aways are making, and if you want to grow your customer base, well, the corporate slaves don't mean anything at this stage.

Nintendo catching up in hardware power, they been 1 gen behind since Wii, to bad they not release a powerful enough console that can last longer time.
