This whole thing sounds like a giant farce now. I remember the rumors about 3ds having an Nvidia chip. Personally I don't see one reason why Nintendo would work with Nvidia, they're more expensive and with the PS3 flat out made an inferior chip.

3DS really was using a Tegra 2 at one point, but that had to change it because it wasn't meeting battery life expectations.

Bullshit, that was another one of these "insider leaks".

This is just a giant waste of time until they actually show the console.

No, it really happened. There were even devs kits with Tegra 2 sent to devs.

@StrongBlackVine: Meanwhile... Minecraft, a game that was sold to Microsoft for billions, can be ran on your phone. League of legends with the world's largest competition venue can be ran on extremely outdated hardware. Since when did hardware strength equate to quality?.. Because if that is the case the PS2 was the worse console that gen due to it being the weakest. I think it is pretty poor judgement to write off Nintendo on this..

Actually, no that would be the Dreamcast. Also, even though the PS2 wasn't the most powerful console of the 6th generation it wasn't a gen behind the competition like the Wii U is.

I don't think being powerful matters much as long as it is strong enough to get some current gen games.I think their vision for the platform matters more than how powerful it is.

If that were true, then everyone would not be hating on the xbox one for being just slightly less powerful than the ps4.

Devs saying that they had the Tegra-based kits isn't proof? It sounds like you're just trying to find reasons to deny this rumor. Just deal with the truth, or else you'll be disappointed.

@Phazevariance:

I've said it numerous times but imo it ultimately boils down to game development. There isn't much on the ps4 that truly scream "next gen". A new graphical feature here and there, but software development on a gameplay front has not evolved much with this "next gen" ps4.

For those that have played Starfox Zero; I think Nintendo will envelop the concept of screen--controller--player. The 3D audio in Starfox adds so much to the experience. A lot of thought clearly went into this and it is something which adds a new dimension to the player/game connection.

It is different. Vr is creating a virtual environment with the player enclosed in a helmet. And this is part of the reason I don't think vr will take off. A lot goes into the sound design. Are developers going to optimize both the vr environment AND the more traditional 5.1/7.1 spaces?

Agree when the majority of developers are catering their games to the format.

3D films took off with Avatar......shortly after it crashed and burned.

There wouldn't be a win or lost if you didn't turn this VS debate. A discussion doesn't need to be VS debate i.e. information sharing is not VS debate.

You just have to look around more and don't rely on just the PC market.

http://gadgets.ndtv.com/mobiles/news/vivo-xplay5-elite-with-6gb-of-ram-snapdragon-820-soc-launched-808856

Qualcomm SnapDragon 820 with 6GB of LPDDR4

https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/processors/820

Qualcomm SnapDragon 820 has dual-channel LPDDR4 1866MHz (29.8 GB/s). Qualcomm's LPDDR4 memory controller is already faster than NVIDIA TX1's Shield TV.

LPDDR4 configuration for SnapDragon 820

MCH1= two modules with 1.5 GB (12 Gbit) each

MCH2= two modules with 1.5 GB (12 Gbit) each

Total memory: 6 GB.

---

MCH1= two modules with 2.0 GB (16 Gbit) each

MCH2= two modules with 2.0 GB (16 Gbit) each

Total memory: 8 GB.

----------------------

SnapDragon 823 has quad-channel 32bit LPDDR4 2166 MHz (69.3 GB/s) or dual-channel 32bit LPDDR4 2166 MHz (34.65 GB/s).

For Pascal Tegra, I expect NVIDIA to catch up to Qualcomm SnapDragon 823's LPDDR4 memory channel configuration and then offer it to their potential customers. NVIDIA is competing against mobile SoC giant Qualcomm (the other red team).

Not including Apple's ARM based SoCs, high end Qualcomm SoC devices is the premium product over competitors.

It's up Nintendo to select a configuration for their PCB which is based on their willingness to pay for it. Nintendo's track record is to go cheap approach and this is not NVIDIA/AMD/Intel/Qualcomm's problem.

https://www.qualcomm.com/news/snapdragon/2016/03/02/sonys-first-xperia-x-and-xperia-x-performance-feature-power-snapdragon

Sony's Qualcomm 820 based Xperia-X device.

http://pocketnow.com/2016/04/12/fall-android-flagships-snapdragon-823-8gb-ram-rumor

Next batch of Android flagships could jump to Snapdragon 823 with up to 8GB RAM

What makes this rumor feel particularly sketchy is its Weibo originator hints at the Samsung Galaxy Note 6, an “unknown” Sony Xperia, and… LG G Flex 3 coming soon with SD823 power.

PS; The reason I selected Forza 6 Apex is due to lower API level DX12 and closer to Vulkan. PC's DX11 is a dead end API.

A prudent CE developer would "buy" different dev kits to evaluate i.e. that's to be expected. Road maps are part of the evaluation process.

After the hype with Wii U's Power7 and RV770(1.2 TFLOPS) that resulted with low end/cheap versions .... I'm weary of Nintendo's hardware configurations.

Probably not smart to bring up Star Fox Zero as a great example of innovation.

For TX1 or Pascal, 700 GFLOPS 32bit FP can yield 1.4 TFLOPS 16bit FP. Using 16bit FP mode halves the storage and memory bandwidth requirements.

NX is not completely weak.

It seems desktop Maxwellv2 doesn't support TX1's 16bit FP mode.

Ultrabook mobility has different value from normal laptops and desktop form factors. For Wii U 's compute power, it did not deliver ultrabook mobility form factor.

The device placed on the top of Wii U is NVIDIA's Shield TV.

You can't understatement form factor's importance.

Since you're probably wondering what the hell Ron's talking about, he's got the idea in his head that portability is a priority for Nintendo with their consoles, and that's why they're small. Really, it's just because they're focused on Japan (where physical living space is limited), but Ron knows everything so don't argue with him.

I just realized what the NVIDIA Shield TV is after watching some videos other places and here. I could see Nintendo doing something like the Shield. I guess you could download games to the hard drive and play them like Nintendo eShop games. This is different than streaming the games from your PC like you do with a Steam Link. I used to be 100% against digital games only, but I have had good experiences with the Wii and Wii U stores. I could almost go for a Nintendo console like the NVIDIA Shield if the games were priced right. The Shield is so compact that I could set it beside the Wii U and it wouldn't take up hardly any space. I guess that is another reason why a small form factor is valuable: space-efficiency. The games would have to be priced right because I would be hesitant to pay more than $20 for a digital game. I have purchased many retro digital games for less than $10. I just don't think I could pay $60 for a digital game. So we could get a Nintendo NVIDIA-type console for $200 maybe? $200 for 16GB or $300 for 500GB? If Nintendo was going to do something like this, I could see why they would want to be careful where, when, and how they would reveal it. It would be a little controversial for a traditional console to go this way. Would it really be a "new concept" in gaming though, since there is already Apple TV and NVIDIA Shield TV? Maybe the use of cartridges with the NX (Nintendo TV) would be the hybrid and "new concept" that Nintendo is talking about? Has anyone here played games on the NVIDIA Shield, and can say whether it is a good gaming device?

Presumably, it would use game cards like DS and 3DS.

@techhog89: Maybe smaller games would be on the cards and the larger games would be downloaded to the hard drive. Would the cards be able to handle large games, and would they look ok on TV? I would be happy with Wii U level graphics, and anything better would be fantastic.

No idea how big the cards would be. I don't think 64GB is out of the question. Using cards wouldn't affect graphics, so if the console is close to XB1 the games will look a little worse than XB1 games in general.

The sd cards can go up to 128gb or maybe more.

Yes, but DS/3DS game cards are not the same as SD cards, They use ROM instead of re-writable NAND and are much faster than your typical SD card.

NX is just sounding more and more disappointing by the day and it's no wonder why they decided not to talk about it at E3.

Since you're probably wondering what the hell Ron's talking about, he's got the idea in his head that portability is a priority for Nintendo with their consoles, and that's why they're small. Really, it's just because they're focused on Japan (where physical living space is limited), but Ron knows everything so don't argue with him.

Are you claiming a larger brick like case like XBO or PS4? Heading towards a non-optical drive system reduces the case size and cost.

Right, because there's nothing in-between. A system without an optical drive must be the size of the Shield Android TV.

Bringing up star fox is a bad idea. That's an example of why innovation for the sake of it is a terrible idea, not a great example of the benefits of innovation. As an aside, oh dear lord the font here is suddenly super bad. Just plain awful.

Star Fox Zero is a fun game. I am really enjoying it and recommend it to anyone that has a Wii U.

I don't think being powerful matters much as long as it is strong enough to get some current gen games.I think their vision for the platform matters more than how powerful it is.

Fat chance it's going to get multiplatform games like Doom and GTA. Just goes to show how weak Wii U is that they have to replace it.

So on this rumour Nintendo fans are back to graphics don't matter but on the ones where they convince themselves the NX will be more powerful than God graphics do matter.

Must be really hard being a corporate slave and remaining consistent.

Nintendo's has got to get out of making consoles and just make games. They haven't a clue what they are doing. Every time they release a console, its weaker than the consoles that have been out for 2+ years already.

I remember the Wii U was weaker than the ps3 and xbox 360... not exactly how this was possible since those consoles were ancient in comparison, yet nintendo wanted to release an inferior console anyways. Obvious that the NX will follow this same path.

Last time Nintendo actually released a console that was equal or better in cpu/gpu ability was back with the gamecube, which still sucked because of the awful controller and bad choice for optical drive while lacking a hard drive.

Wii U's GPU is better than Xbox 360's GPU, but it's CPU is pretty crap.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-need-for-speed-most-wanted-wii-u-face-off

With all of its GamePad-based features and visual tweaks, a concern is rightly raised that the low 1.24GHz core clocks of the Wii U's CPU may be a limiting factor for performance - an issue that came to a head with the choppier frame-rate of the Black Ops 2 port. From the onset, the setup for Most Wanted remains the same as on Sony and Microsoft hardware: it's a 30FPS target with permanently engaged v-sync to cut out all tearing

...

At no expense to the frame-rate, textures stand at the midway point in the quality spectrum, between the more blurry assets we're seeing on PS3 and 360 and the highest possible settings on PC. It's a worthwhile upgrade that extends to reflection draw too, with all other visual facets being identical, and the frame-rate coming away smoother regardless

The problem with Wii U is it's price and performance relative to PS4 and XBO.

Wii U's first party games wasn't enough to change it's position from being last.

http://www.polygon.com/2015/7/21/9009653/project-cars-wii-u-canceled

In May, Bell commented on the game's forums that the development on the Wii U was facing difficulty, saying they had gotten Project CARS to run at 23 frames per second at 720p resolution on the console. Bell indicated the studio was "waiting/hoping for more of a hardware announcement at E3."

Wii U didn't reach 30 fps for Project Cars.
