to blatantly dismiss the system 3-5 hours is plenty of time for the majority of gamers on the 3DS who do not go on portable gaming marathons and for those that want a longer battery life guess what... Just like the Psp there will be replaceable batteries.

I just do not see why DS fans would want the 3DS to be lowered in specs or raised in cost to give them there niche expectated play time. I mean the NGP will probably have a little longer battery life but it should because you cannot replace the battery...

Surely I cannot be the only one bothered by the constant media complaints of the battery life?

I don't really care that much, but I'd much prefer a battery life like on the ds.

The battery life should be longer, but it's not a dealbreaker.

Slashkice

Battery technology slowly advances and the only solution would be maybe to use OLED but that could drive up the price even more and was probably extremely difficult to pull off as OLED does not have glassless 3D screens yet.

I wouldn't say it perfectly fine as it should be longer, but it won't be a huge issue for me. I was okay with the 5-6 hours battery life of the PSP.

So you would prefer them to take out the only innovation and the selling point of the 3DS as well as possibley downgrade the graphics even after that?

Handheld battery life has declined and even the DS had less than the GBA.

Depends your portable gaming habits but for me, a few hours of battery is fine as long as it's rechargeable.

And you really think the battery will improve much by then... The DS got a battery downgrade from the lite to i and XL and the psp only slightly increased the battery life in later models (2000, 3000,etc.)

Not at all because if your involved in the niche market that would use a system 5+ hours without a recharge than you could easily bring a replacement battery.

You have to wait like 4 years if they even do one since the 3DS upgrades itself.

Because it is vastly superior in tech to the Ds and Psp.

The Ds barely matched the N64

The Psp was around Ps2 and Dreamcast (UMD made its battery life imo) tech while the 3DS is approaching the Wii...

N64 to Wii is a pretty big jump.

It can get up to 8 hours for 3DS games, more for DS games based on settings

I don't get it. Why would that bother anyone?

1. The 3DS has a short battery life.
2. The enthusiast press reports this to their readers.
3. ????
4. Oh my god the press is so stupid and unfair and exaggerative!

It is simply unacceptable. You can make all the excuses you want, but battery life should definitely be in the discussion. At least Sony said they would be working on optimizing their options for the NGP. If anything Nintendo should have just put in a bigger battery (which would probably only put it at the same size as the original ds). And it will be at least 2 years until the next iteration.

It's bad enough I have to be leashed to my PSP for the most part for any longish play sessions. I wont be picking up a handheld that has even worse battery life. Nintendo has lost me as a 3DS consumer until they revise the battery, and considering the flak they are getting about it I doubt I'll have to wait any longer than the second itteration of the system. If not, then I'll just be waiting for the NGP to fill my next gen handheld desires.

Well considering how weak the graphics engine is, yes the battery life should be much better. I think the design of the 3D is to blame and they should have just focused on better graphics than some crappy 3D effect that gives most users a headache.

At its worst it has the same battery life as the psp3000.. Which Ive never had a problem with imo.. I was never playing and went DARN IM OUT OF BATTERY AGAIN?.... Just charge it whenever you aren't playing its not a big deal. The psp1000 was a big problem, at launch it was like an hour and a half lol.. but 3-5 hours is fine...

Most of the time I played the DS it was plugged in, so this doesn't bother me too much.

I'll just have to make sure the 3DS gets charged before a long trip, as I would do with the DS, and bring alternate forms of entertainment with me when/if the battery dies.

wow 2nd poster saying it should be longer turn off the 3d and you get as much as a ds phat , stop complaining , also turning off street pass and wifi when not in use ,

helps to

ds phat got 5-9 hours on max 10 -12 on min and in gba mode,

so this isnt to bad of a downgrade id like you to look at psp and the confirmed ngp life -3 to 4.and half hours gameplay with max settings

ya ngps battery life was confirmed by ign amoung other sources and said its the same as a stock psp 1000-3000

sure in a 3000 u can put a 1000 battery and get 8 hours BUT STILL

FOR a system thats more powerful then a psp , its got more batterylife then it makes it better then it and hasgames to boot -see mgs re saints row driver mariokart nintendogs pilot wings asphalt -looks gorgeous without 3d-from the trailers ,

and ridge racer among other original titles like steel diver and professor layton ,

and we all know how good oot star fox and super mairo 3ds is gonna be as well as paper mario and kid icaris in june omg -theres no complaining in my camp i can confirm in june july ill be buying 3 games each just to snatch all of these

and my wallet would hurt in deffinatelly from 3ds compared to ds i didnt start getting to 40 titles til dkr time -with that said ,

this is looking like my best handheld yet

the psp came out 7 years ago and it should easily have more battery power than something made that long ago, considering the fact that the 3ds isn't that much more powerful than the psp.

On my DS Lite I'm playing at brightness level 2/5 which is more than enough to me. I'll keep Wi-Fi off. Generally, I will try the stereo 3D effect for each game ofc and fool around with it but for the most time I will be playing with 3D off. Playing this way will result in around 5 hours depending on game so the battery life won't affect me. Those are real numbers btw, from someone who played in exactly this way; "Here is an update on battery life based on these settings: mid-level brightness, no 3D, with no wifi, power save off. Total time via the system's log: 4:43. If you have any wonders as to what software was played during this time: Super Street Fighter IV, PilotWings, and Lego Starwars Episode 3." For longer trips you always have the option to boot up a VC / 3DSware / DSiWare / DS game. If you want a stronger battery, keep in mind that they would have to make 3DS significantly bigger to fit such a battery and the system would cost more. Given these counterarguments that I've presented, I still think 3 hours with 3D on is not great and I understand people being upset. However you are getting amazing stereo 3D without glasses on the go for a relatively low price.

PSP's battery is just as bad, and this has the strain of 3D, two screens, better graphics and a higher level of brightness, so it's actually about what you'd expect.

I do not deny the 3DS battery life is putrid, but to have it at a size small enough and at the same time, powering essentially three screens at once doesn't help matters at all.

OLED isn't the big game changer in battery life some people seem to think it is. I believe arstechnica did a report on it a while back, while yes it often requires less power than LCD but depending on the colours it's displaying it often requires MORE power. plus of course there's the technical limitations of using OLED for a paralex 3d screens.

battery life has always been the strong point of nintendo handhelds- the DS Lite could go on for something like 15 hours. the 3DS has a 3-5 hour battery life despite the large battery it has.

They'd have to make the unit itself bigger to fit a stronger battery, which means strictly not happening. You have to consider that with the 3D off you will almost double the battery life, it's not ideal but you do have an option if you really need to play more than 3-4 hours. Then again you can recharge while playing, doesn't hurt the condition of this type of battery. When I get 3DS I will still have DS, PC, Wii and PS3 games to play so what's the whole issue about battery life? Yeah it sucks for longer trips and such scenarios, but most of the time people play at home.

The battery lasting 3-5 hours means it'll need to be recharged more. Constant recharging reduces the amount of total charge the battery can hold. So it is a legitimate concern.
