He's not bashing Gravity Daze.

minh800

All I'm saying is that a reviewer should take everything (including the story) into consideration before assigning a numerical value to the game, and it's unprofessional for the reviewer to do so prematurely.

If he wanted to do a "first-look" article of the game, that's one thing.

But reviewing is something else entirely.

No worries.

I knew where you were coming from from the start.

minh, I know the game is an ARPG, but I don't know much about the game and I know you do, so... How important is the plot for this game?

You love Pokemon yet are bashing Gravity Daze cause we dont know the story ? seriously man ?

Blake135

He's not bashing Gravity Daze.

Maybe not the game itself, but he puts Eurogamer into question about their review simply because *they couldnt understand the story* Often games dont need a amazing and well written story, yes it does help the game but in the end its all about gameplay. Some people do play for story lines, I myself play some games knowing im going to get one hell of a awesome time out of it, that hits me on a emotional level that I can take with me after I put down the /handheld/console/mouse. The game is fun to play and thats all I need, one of my fav games is God Hand, pretty average story (however I love it) but the gameplay is so deep that who cares about the goofy story when im having fun.

And I get where he's coming from especially since the story is apparently a positive in Gravity Rush. It is a bit unprofessional.

I wouldn't call it an ARPG. The RPG elements are pretty lite. If you can love Zelda games without paying any attention to the story, you can love this too, apparently. But since the characters are pretty out there, I'd figure you'd like to know what's going on.

Not really. It is an open world action adventure game but it focuses on exploration instead of dungeon crawling and there aren't many (if any) puzzles. I just used Zelda as an example because the story isn't a big factor in the enjoyment you get from it.

Lol, you're just making me more excited with every next sentence. The thing I appreciate about Zelda *is* the exploration (though I enjoy the dungeons too). Okay, this game just shot up dramatically on my hype radar. In a way now, I'm glad it was delayed. I may actually be able to buy a Vita for it when it releases.

I love Zelda for the exploration too. Yeah, exploring is a big part of the game. I was surprised by how huge the cities are. It would take quite a while just to get across one on foot. And the underbellys have quite a bit to find too. Not to mention there are dungeons but they're more for combat than anything else.

This is taken from Inferno, one of the dungeons:

I'm crazy hyped for the game.

How does the combat play?

How long is the game?

Also, a bit weird, but I've been playing Ocarina lately, and I realize how much I appreciate this specific trait, so... how 'open world' is the game?

That's in game. This is how the concept art looks like.

You'll be mainly kicking in the game (it's not like Bayonetta fast or anything). You can level up this specific thing to get a lengthy combo and do jump kicks, stomps, and other stuff. You'll also be doing gravity kicks a lot. The farther away you are, the more impact it has. But you can't lock onto enemies so you might miss them by a hair. There are other abilities too. You can use a stasis field to lift and then throw objects at enemies. Another is the gravity slide where you slide into enemies and automatically attack them. Plus other stuff.

If you mess around, explore, and do some challenge missions, 15 hours. Focusing mainly on the story will take you 10 hours to finish.

The world isn't completely open from the start and only four of the eight main locations are actually connected to each other (there are other locations but they're closed off when you finish the game). You can take a train to go between each city or fall to it.

What's impressive is that the two look fairly similar similar. How often is the concept art indicative of the final game to any reasonable degree?

I like that gravity mechanic, it sounds like a fair trade off for risk and reward.

15 hours though sounds a bit short, although I suppose it's still longer than most console games.

I think I'm gonna keep a closer eye on this one. But you might just have sold me on this (and by extension the Vita too) :P

I've played the demo of Gravity Rush from the Hong Kong PSN store and it's pretty awesome. I'm hyped as hell for this game and might even import because of this review.

I'm not really sure. I guess it depends on how powerful the machine is.

It's the main draw.

There will be paid DLC episodes (but everyone said they were happy with what they got in game). They said they're going to make them as cheap as possible but you know Sony. :P

You should. It's a definite gem.

Theres actually another review for this game from a french website up on MC, They gave it 5/5 and are quoted saying "Games that are as exceptional as this one are so rare, than when one comes, it's impossible not to grab it really tight and press it against our chest."

I love how Eurogamer reviewed it without actually knowing what the story was about.

Miroku32

Yeah. that's amusing. What would happened if the game in fact was about the most cliché story ever?

They probably would have gotten over it, and just been fine and dandy knowing the gameplay is that damn good?

Yeah this will be Vitas first proper game. And it will generate quite a bit of hardware sales especially once they drop price of hardware.

In the end the Vita will be ok and if you think about it it can't really be any other way. All these systems will be worth owning eventually.

To be fair, I might have given Final Fantasy 13 a great score had I played it in a foreign language - the story was bollocks, the characters incredibly annoying, etc. So...yeah, this isn't really indicative of anything.

I'm sure the problem of FF13 was in its painfully drawn out start and subsequent failure to capitalize on all its gameplay aspects later. Not being able to understand what the characters were saying/doing wouldn't have really made a difference. In fact, I'd rather think I would've turned it off sooner. Man, that game sucked.

Gameplay is what breaks or makes a game. If someone is interested in really good stories, one should read a book or watch a movie.

Language in games aren't just part of stories. And stories can be part of the gameplay. In a game like Skyrim, Chrono Trigger or Heavy Rain language and story matters a great deal to the overall enjoyment and it added a lot to my enjoyment of Portal 1.

I won't tell these people what they should like or not, but I think these guys are looking in the wrong industry. Playing video games to appreciate stories is like going to a strip club to discuss poetry. Sure it might give you some interesting perspectives and opportunities, but it's not exactly the point.

1. No English subtitles in any of the available versions.

2. You didn't even read the title to know he doesn't speak Japanese?

3. It matters to me because the story is allegedly good, and so, the game could have been gotten an even higher score and more praise.

I'm all for stories in video games although it doesn't make sense that anyone would play games ONLY for stories. If all you care about is stories than just watch a movie, TV series, or read a book. For one, it'd be much cheaper, and secondly, since the whole point of a movie, TV series, or book are the stories they are typically better executed than those in video games.

DJ-Lafleur

1. The the developers are stupid then

2. Nope, as most titles in system wars are either wrong/out of context.

3. As stated in #1, the developers are stupid as not everyone has the time or knowledge to speak Japanese, thus an International release is meaningless.

1. You mean for doing something that most Japanese developers do? Yeah, okay, buddy.

2. So you're speaking out of ignorance.

3. As I stated in my reply to #1, Japanese developers usually don't sub their games. Which is where these things called publishers step in. They do the subbing and dubbing, not developers.

1. Again, they're stupid, just becasue you do something alot does not mean it's intelligent.

2. Yup

3. So then the Publisher is stupid then.

I don't want to drag this out but... seriously? There isn't much incentive for Japanese developers or publishers to put English subs in their games if they're not being published in English speaking nations. There aren't many English only speaking importers out there. It would be a waste of money and time for them to do that. That would be stupid.

I love how Eurogamer reviewed it without actually knowing what the story was about.

It really speaks volumes about their reviewing quality.

peterw007

lol yep, that is pretty silly.

My beef with Eurogamer is that they do those stupid Lens of Truth comparisons with Digital Foundry, everyone in their right mind knows the differences are too minimal to even be noticed or care about, but they do it just to get fanboys to their site for ad revenue hits. It just makes them look unprofessional IMO.

Why are people saying this has a bad story all of a sudden? I heard the contrary actually.

Yeah, but not because of the stories. I'm really not seeing your point here.

But they're hella fun. And not because of the stories. GTA certainly has some gameplay issues, but the gameplay itself it still extremely fun and addicting. I consider GTA San Andreas to be my favourite game of all time. That has almost nothing to do with the story. In fact half way through I'd almost forgotten what the hell was even going on! GTA is super popular because of the really fun sandbox gameplay, not the stories.

Miroku32

Yeah. that's amusing. What would happened if the game in fact was about the most cliché story ever?

Why does that matter when the game is told to be a blast?
